Ajax Amsterdam

So apparently we are in for Mike Godts, who is having a great season at Ajax with 14 goals and 9 assists so far in the league for an absolutely dreadful Ajax.

Coincidently I posted about him yesterday in the 'under the radar' transfers thread. I think he is an amazing talent who is consistently growing over the last couple of years. Already over a 100 official caps for Ajax and turning 21 in June.

I think he is the kind of player - a skillful playful fast winger - who might be a bit lazy'ish by default, but from what I hear and read about the guy is that he is very self aware and very conscious about his development and area's he needs to develop. You also see that he is making steps gradually over time.. In his delivery of goals and assists, in his decision making, in the responsibility he takes during games which aren't going well, in the energy he puts in forward pressure, his physique in general..

Good player but by no means ready for United yet.

After the disaster that was Antony, I am weary. Haven’t seen him play at all but the youtube videos indicate he is quick, has great close control and can cross and finish with both feet.

How are Ajax doing financially? How much would he realistically cost?

Absolutely love to have an electric winger lighting up Old Trafford.

Hope he is a better fit than the last winger we bought from Ajax.

He is better than Antony, for sure.

He is producing much more at a younger age, while in a worse Ajax side. Antony's Eredivisie numbers were never that fantastic, despite them winning consecutive league titles while he was there. He was just a terrible buy (even at the time he looked a mistake to me).

His output looks closer to the 22 year-old Gakpo's in his last full season before signing for Liverpool. Gakpo was playing for a PSV side regularly finishing 2nd in the Eredivisie. Godts is at an Ajax side currently 4th in the table.

Godts this season in Eredivisie - 20 years old - 2073 minutes - 14 goals 9 assists = goal or assist every 90.1 minutes
Gakpo Eredivisie full season before Liverpool - 22 years old - 1911 minutes - 12 goals 13 assists = goal or assist every 76.4 minutes
Antony Eredivisie full season before United - 22 years old - 1736 minutes - 8 goals 4 assists = goal or assist every 144.7 minutes

I quite like the idea of this signing tbh. After Diomande, he's the only winger I've seen United strongly linked with who seems to make some sense. Gakpo has after a shaky start ended up being a pretty solid squad option for Liverpool. Godts' output suggests he should be able to replicate at least a solid PL squad player role eventually at a fee which shouldn't break the bank.

I think his skill-set - with him being excellent at dribbling in tight spaces and also executing through-balls - means I could also see him working very well in the 10 role in future.

He looks very good, but I think we need to go for a Premier League proven winger

Personally, to me this is punt money territory only type of signing. I like the player but the PL is on such a different level of physicality nowadays I am wary of how attackers transition between leagues. And I agree with the above poster, he needs another year of seasoning, although at that point the price will go up if he continues his trajectory. Tough call.

I think you guys are nowhere near excited enough to be honest...

Unlike Antony or Donny ever were he is a very special talent if you ask me..

In the 2mins of YouTube video I've seen of him, stylistically similar to Garnacho? Does he have better game awareness and end product?

I think he has a much closer technique than Garnacho and therefore is more effective and skillful in smaller spaces..

His awareness and end product are and were definetely point of improvement as he often went for own success when coming through... You already see this improving significantly throughout this season.. Visible with both the eye test and the assist stats are backing it up this season..

Wouldn’t want him as our first choice LW and if that’s the case, I don’t think he’s needed as we have players that can fill in there.

Love how many are dismissing him already, same lot will be wondering how our scouts didn't notice him before he went to Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Dortmund or Leipzig. In a year we will be quoted 70m.

Who has seen him play? What's his pace like? Dribbling? Technique? Shooting? Fitness record?

Thanks for sharing this.

The numbers do look impressive.

I am all for signing exciting high potential talent.

The key will be that we get him for cheap.

Rebuilding our midfield will take a lot of money which I assume will consume the majority of our budget.

We may want a backup striker as well if we sell Zirkzee.

Watched an Ajax game live against Nijmegen last month, and he scored in that 1-1 draw.
I’d say he was probably Ajax’s best player that day but not the best on the pitch. Can’t say he looked United quality.

Has he tried to be like Grace Kelly? We should relax, take it easy before making a final decision on this.

I think we need a more explosive player for the left attacking position as we already have Cunha as the drifting inside dribbler. I’d go for the RB Leipzig lad Diomande who seems ideal for the demands of the premier league

Sceptical. You could say this about Maguire too, and it makes him a liability on counter attacks.

It just isn't possibly to buy good PL players for every position though. Some of our signings need to be players like this. Otherwise we'd only sign 2-3 players per window.
