I thought a bit about Mourinho‘s teams of the past. Remembering his Inter team for example. And while he always set up to play very negatively and defensively, the very moment an opportunity arose, his team would take it. They didn’t attack much. But they did attack. With purpose, urgency and skill. Which worked so well, because players like Milito or Eto‘o were resilient and confident. And because Mourinho showed them, that he trusted them. Those teams just oozed confidence.
Arteta however, is a ver different case. If you watch yesterdays game, that whole attack lacked confidence. Saka looked miserable throughout the game. He did what was expected of him. But you could tell he hates playing like this. And he’s not the only one. Ödegaard suffers the same fate. And that’s on Arteta.
He has degraded his attackers to actors whose sole purpose is to defend as much as possible and try to create set pieces. No room for individual brilliance. No fluid patterns of play. No Joy at all. Of course they lack confidence and joy.
And it never had to be like this. I know the way they approach set pieces has been heavily criticised. But other than the time wasting aspect, I never did mind it all that much. The rules allowed for it, so they exploited it.
But instead of this being a part of their plan, something to fall back on, when things aren’t going as planned, they made it their whole identity. It became all they do and all they know how to do. And when teams are able to prevent them from getting into these situations and are able to defend the few opportunities Arsenal did have like yesterday, they have absolutely nothing to fall back on. They had no plan b, no alternatives at all. And that’s on Arteta. And it is inexcusable, because the competition was always going to catch up on their set pieces. Advantages like this fade quickly. Other teams have set piece analysts, too. So believing that you can ride this wave all the way to a CL trophy is naive. And that’s on Arteta.
A better manager would have used the set piece strength as part of a bigger tactical approach that doesn’t stifle his own offense. Usw it as a security blanket of sorts. Let them play football (doesn’t have to be like PSG or Bayern do it) and if the game doesn’t go your way, you still have set pieces. Like an insurance policy that provides you with a sense of security.
Arteta failed to understand that. They went all in on some gimmicks and rightfully lost. They would have lost the league, too, if it weren’t for the bad competition. The whole last few months, this team just stumbled towards the finish line, desperately hoping they would at least hold on to some of the titles sitting in the palm of their hands.
