I had such high hopes for Williams. He might still have a decent career ahead of him. Moorehouse wasn't great on loan, by all accounts, but might come good.

Yeah my guess is that he will be sold. I like Moorhouse and Williams too, but they are too old and need to find a new club.

Perhaps I’m just getting old and disillusioned but the fact there’s such a thing as the “Dude Perfect International Youth Cup” is absolutely mind boggling to me, I’m 30 and I remember watching them do basketball / baseball trickshots on YouTube now they’re hosting youth tournaments for elite football academies? That’s completely bonkers to me

U13s-U15s ended their season with a game at Old Trafford last week
Tony Whelan awarded an MBE for services to football. Thoroughly deserved.
Pulled out of the EFL Trophy and NLC. Stupid decision, they were the most competitive matches on offer and actually prepared the players for senior football.
They will be on the UEFA youth cup this season though which they didn’t have last season
Yet Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool were in the EFL Trophy and UYL without a problem.
The EFL Trophy is the highest level of competition available and is actually senior football. Dropping out of it is stupid. The step from youth to senior football has never been higher and we’ve just thrown out the best two options at bridging it.
Why did they do it? I can't help but think we're not where we should be academy wise. We develop nice players but they struggle taking the next step up from the U18s particularly. Can't help thinking they don't get enough competitive football and physicality preparedness is lacking.
Can't understand the decision. Not enough games at it is, the UYL doesn't add that many games and definitely can't compare it to actually playing competitive games against men

Based on what we did this past season, most of our U21s that will be in the academy vs being loaned are going to be 18-19 year olds. I think we're focusing on getting our academy players a loan once they're old enough to be in the U21s.
If you're 20 still in the u21s and haven't gone on loan once you're in big trouble and most likely not going to stay in the team. I think we've made that decision going forward. So instead letting the u21s experience Europe is probably seen as the better alternative. All of the players going on loan means our squad will be relatively small

Very weird decision, unless they are planning to loan a lot of players in u21 in that case it might pay off.
Not saying it is for that reason, but every time Ineos makes a decision, I instantly think: How much money are they saving because of this? So there you go.

I think this will be the plan. I'm not convinced that playing 4 games against EFL sides is particularly great for development especially when the EFL sides rest some of their actual first team players.

You know what helps get better loans? A catalogue of impressive performances against senior sides in the EFL Trophy and National League Cup. Worked wonders for Devaney.
7+ matches against senior opposition does far more for development than any youth competition.
Bit of a weird place to get this news but seems U21 will be going to Germany for pre season
12 months ago, I would have agreed but having attended a few games last season, I'm not convinced. The matches had very little intensity at times and almost no atmosphere. it might suit the odd player but theres no harm in us deviating away from this if its not working for the majority of our players.
I'd much rather we do it differently and spend some time developing more positive relationships with good League 1/League 2 sides and getting our 18-20 year olds positive loan moves.
There's a wider debate about the under 23/21 league no longer being fit for purpose and the need for young players to get real match experience against senior opposition. I'm just no longer convinced these mostly meaningless cup games are the way to do it now.
Interestingly, first United game was a reserve match in the mid 90s and players like Steve Bruce and Lee Sharpe were playing with some of the class of 92. Whilst those games obviously lacked intensity, it was cool that players who didn't start for the first team almost automatically played for the reserves. Maybe that system would work better.
