I remember reading an interview with Van Gaal, in which he said that first-teamers not getting minutes should be playing for the Reserves to keep sharp.12 months ago, I would have agreed but having attended a few games last season, I'm not convinced. The matches had very little intensity at times and almost no atmosphere. it might suit the odd player but theres no harm in us deviating away from this if its not working for the majority of our players.
I'd much rather we do it differently and spend some time developing more positive relationships with good League 1/League 2 sides and getting our 18-20 year olds positive loan moves.
There's a wider debate about the under 23/21 league no longer being fit for purpose and the need for young players to get real match experience against senior opposition. I'm just no longer convinced these mostly meaningless cup games are the way to do it now.
Interestingly, first United game was a reserve match in the mid 90s and players like Steve Bruce and Lee Sharpe were playing with some of the class of 92. Whilst those games obviously lacked intensity, it was cool that players who didn't start for the first team almost automatically played for the reserves. Maybe that system would work better.
These days, even seniors coming back from injury play in PL2, and many would throw the toys out of the cot if asked, I'd imagine.
Not sure what to do. Would love to see the second team be the building ground for the tactics of the first team, but it has to be balanced with producing players ready for the professional game at all standards, which is not quite the same thing.
Entering those cups was a good idea overall, even if it resulted in teams resting loads of players and very little atmosphere, it still gave a sense of what it is like playing against men rather than other youths.
I still think things were better overall with the old system of the Reserves, A and B teams.
