Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Ben Lyne putting in inch perfect free-kick deliveries with his weaker foot. Very nearly 2-0.

2-0. Brilliant play from Mane Soares down the right, he stands up a cross and Bangura meets it with an oustanding leap.

3-0, an almost identical goal. Soares cuts in and crosses to the back post, this time for Lyne to nod home.

Finishes 3-0 to United. Solid performance with Rangers threatening very little.

Mane Soares was really bright, Nyonyi had a strong game in midfield and the defensive partnership of Murdock & Deighton were excellent. Also very impressed by the general atittude and workrate of the whole team, even at 3-0 up.

Co. Antrim beat Intercontinental 5-3 in the other group game, meaning we have to beat them tomorrow in order to make the semis.

Was so impressed with soares today and he’s apparently only 13!! Thought the pivot of nyonyi and Bangura were great aswell.

I believe we bought Jed Bangura from Cambridge United last year. if I am not mistaken.
Brian Nyonyi looks almost dead cert to make it though. complete class.

I know it's pretty early to be thinking about next year's scholars but I'm curious to see what happens with this group. Currently we'll have 12 slots available to us in a group of 18 U16s, where I really struggle to find 6 players to cut. And that's without even thinking about recruiting others from elsewhere. So it'll be interesting to see how the club manage it and how ruthless they decide to be.

U16 XI vs Co. Antrim:

Hartley ; Deighton, Harrison, Waters, Fagborun ; Mills, Bangura (c) ; Chisnall-Devent, Wright, Lyne ; Okeke

1-0 United. Antrim give the ball away sloppily, Okeke does well to find Lyne and he does the rest. Against the run of play you'd say though.

1-1, freak own goal with the ball cleared by one defender onto another and ending up in the corner.

Defense has been all over the place in possession. They will learn that this is not the sort of pitch to take chances at the back with.

Finishes 1-1 and United lose out on making the semis by virtue of goals scored. Struggled on a much harsher pitch today and just never really got going. Also factor of United heavily rotating the side, which is the right thing to do but obviously impacts on results. Ultimately not taking more of our chances in the opener against Intercontinental has come back to bite us.

They'll go again with a couple of consolation games now.

That number 7? Lad looks like 140cm tall. :D Thought who he is but explains a lot if he's only 13yo.

U16 XI vs Sunderland:

Irving ; Akinsanya, Murdock, Deighton, Fagborun ; Nyonyi (c), Mills; Dore, Soares, Lyne ; Okeke

1-0 United, Mane Soares with a fierce strike from outside the area that had too much pace for the keeper.

Sunderland's first real foray forward and they strike the bar. Think Irving potentially gets a finger to it, if so that's an incredible save.

Jed Bangura on the sidelines with crutches & a knee brace. Always seems to be at least one injury we pick up at this tournament. Real shame because he was excellent.

United remarkably fail to score what was pretty much a 5v1 after Sunderland's keeper came up for a corner.

Finishes 1-0 to United. Really unsavory scenes at the end as a full on brawl erupts, sparked by a Sunderland player kicking Jaice Dore while he was on the ground. Dore looks to have been sent off and a couple of others, including some from United, probably should be as well.

Overall United struggled a bit more second half but Sunderland didn't create an awful deal despite the pressure & United could've scored a couple more. Final game tomorrow is against Tigres.

Just looking back at the incident. I know we're dealing with children here and things can easily get heated but really not acceptable behaviour from some of the United players. Punches thrown and all sorts. There's backing your teamates and then there's going way over the top. Coaches will hopefully have a word.

Just found out that Jim Thwaites' sister is part of the U14s squad who have won their opening two games of the tournament. Knew he had a younger brother who is at Carlisle but not that he had a sister who plays as well.

Both the U14 & U16 girls won their tournaments.

U16 XI vs Tigres:

Hartley ; Akinsanya, Murdock, Harrison, Waters ; Mills, Wright ; Chisnall-Devent, Soares, Dore ; Lyne

Looks like Dore wasn't sent off yesterday. I've seen someone say it was Marley Irving but not sure.

It was Irving & Nyonyi who were sent off yesterday. Not sure how it was them over others but there you go.

1-0 Tigres. United dominated the opening 25 minutes or so but Tigres have come back into it and deserve the lead.

1-1. Brilliant play from Deighton to ride two fouls and drive forward. He then finds Murdock who slips a lovely ball in behind for Lyne and he fires into the far corner. Great goal.

Ends 1-1 and we go to penalties.

United win on pens with Hartley the hero as he saved three. Soares, Lyne, Wright, Ibragimov & Deighton scored theirs.

Not their best performance of the tournament but a positive way to end it. They will be disappointed not to have made at least the semis but some good performances overall, with United going unbeaten. Some really good individuals in this group.

Hong Kong trip next in a couple of weeks.
