Mo Salah | PFA Player's Player of the Year

They dropped off massively when they lost Suarez and Mane. The others you listed were fairly easy to replace because none of them were anything special.
When they lost mane they had a bad season, but they came back up after it, and the season after that they are top.

Aside from one season they replaced him well.

thought Coutinho and Sterling were amazing for them. They only dropped in form once they left. Similar to Fernando Torres in lots of ways.

Apparently he just signed a new 2 year contract with Liverpool.

I never felt that going to Saudi was attractive to him, I'm not surprised by his extension.

That's great for Liverpool, two years is nothing even if he was on highest wages in PL(which I doubt he is). If this was United we would probably offer him another 5+1 year contract on biggest wages in PL while he is 32.

He has been great for the first 6 months of this season - however, watch his drop off next season.

He has peaked. It’s already started the last month or so. Cant beat old Father Time.

Afcon is mid December to January later this year as well.

Still they’ve saved themselves a lot of money in not having to sign a replacement yet.

People have been saying this every season since he joined. "One season wonder".

Eventually you'll be right but it's just as silly as Neville predicting every season was going to be his last at Liverpool.

Agreed. Feels like every season we hear he's on the way down, then the absolute twat goes on to have a worldie season. Brilliant player - one of the PL's GOATs.

Ah feck it the guys nearly ancient now anyway, turns 33 soon. Hopefully they're paying mega bucks and his performances drop off a cliff. Thought he'd looked a bit off in the latter part of the season (the bits I'd seen of Liverpool anyway).

More annoyed about that pouty feck Van Djik signing a new contract. He feels like somebody who has more in the tank.

Not so sure it is a good long term deal to sign up two old guys on heavy terms. Delaying rebuild.

Hopefully it does turn out to be a bad thing...

It may well be that in the short term it will be a very good deal. But we have seen it time and time again that players of that age suddenly fail to reach the level that made them so extremely good.

I think Salah looks frighteningly good now, and he could easily be next season too. VVD, on the other hand, is showing much greater signs of weakness and it will not get any better next season. He is in decline.

Interesting you say that, I thought VVD was the most important of the 3 to retain but its harder to recruit 25+ goals a season than anything to be fair.
To be fair, I don't watch them all that much, but exactly like you say, Salah just gets the goal or the assist so often for them. Remove him from their attacking line-up and they are pretty ordinary. And I think that VVD has already declined somewhat and is more likely to continue to decline.

Yes, I remember posting that he looked done as an elite player after the last AFCON where his form slumped and it seemed to be consensus then with everyone largely agreeing. Lots were suggesting they should cash in on Saudi money if they could only for him to produce better than ever form this season and prove me wrong. 3 goals and 1 assist in his last 11 league appearances last season.

Of course he'll be past it at some point in time.

On the plus side, sailing into the distance after picking up another league title would have been a fitting end to his and VVD’s careers. I hope we now get to watch them regress heavily and become an expensive burden to Liverpool.

Yeah despite lots of people not rating him here I think Alexander Arnold was the most important to keep, the other two are 34 and 33 and some decline is surely inevitable and generally when it happens it’s rapid at that age.

If Salah regresses heavily he's off to Saudi in 2026 and we get like at worst £50m for him, I'd imagine.

You've already had a couple of United fans respond to me saying they have thought the same.

Another weird swipe.
Don't mind him, zero added value to any thread these days apart from sarcastic cheap shots to rival/Liverpool fans.

Assuming Van Dijk is going to do the same, their wages must be really good if it’s only a two year deal. It shows they’re not that confident in them because if they regress next season, then they can sell them with one year left. The risk will be if they regress badly.

Them on a short two year deal somewhat negates the rest of the squad piping up asking for wage parity, even though a few of them will be on the phone about it as we speak.

He starts seasons fast. He will score another 20 in the league next year again, no problem.

He only has 18 PL goals in 31 games if you deduct the 9 penalties he has scored.

They more than likely won't be awarded as many penalties next season, which has saved Liverpools skin on many occasions this season.

He has dropped off in form lately, and is only getting older.

Our only meaningful expiring contract in 2026 is Konate - he's on £80k now and apparently asking for £200k. For 2027 it's Jones, Elliott, Gomez, Bradley, Tsimikas, Endo, Alisson, Jota, ... All players who I imagine will be gone by then or we don't need to renew.

A few important ones in 2028 are Gravenberch, Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister but I hope we take care of business for them way before that.

Why?

Yeah was going to post a similar reply.

No one (other than Trent who won't get a new contract for obvious reasons) can seriously ask for parity. A few might try to use it as a negotating tool, but strangely given our likely title, I don't think we'd really care if we lost many who expire soon other than Konaté.

Pretty surprising tbh, guess he figures the Saudi money still on the table in 2 years and doesn't want to waste his prime...

Even if you hate Liverpool, be good if more players took playing at a decent standard v cash grabs.
