Mobility, athleticism

Don’t want to rubbish the list or believe all you read on the internet(don’t) but Eze looks quick. Just checked and online it says 34.0kmh top speed. 9.0kmh for than the list quotes.

You're looking at an overall record from a bunch of games. The list is from the first game of the season where he came on as sub and im sure didnt have time to open his legs up. But thats the case with lots of other players too. We'll see how the list looks after 2 games, or 10 games, etc. It will change a lot.

Adding a LB and CB who are full of energy would do wonders for this team. Currently the only one who plays with any intensity in our defence is Dalot. Martinez does as well but hasn't got any speed in his legs.

It’s a collective problem for the defense and midfield that got exploited in the first half today and will give every team encouragement. When the defence is rebuilt there needs to be a serious injection of pace and physicality.

Hence we should start Yoro and when fit De Ligt. Maguire is done. Martinze is a great passer but has his obvious flaws

Nope. Just Shaw getting skinned. Yes a faster fullback would have helped but not if he was also skinned, the ball would probably still have come in and they would have still scored.

Mbeumo and Shaw/Maguire? chasing Enciso back for that one chance was a positioning error on a set piece leading to a clearance setting them onto a counter too easily. But yes more pace would help, but Mbeumo was our fastest player last season and is our 2nd fastest after Shaw so far this season.

Nope the team is clearly too slow and lacking physically, will get exploited consistently as even Hull and Ipswich have managed to do so with relative ease.

Relative ease, lose 5-2

You have no idea.

You can’t have been watching, 4 goals conceded against two newly promoted teams. Can tell you are clueless be use you probably base everything on top speed stats, no idea how people still don’t understand them.

Yeah the fastest teams score the most goals right?

Two goals were set pieces and shit marking.
Another goal was because of an unforced error.

3 had nothing to do with physicality whatsoever

The only issue is we currently lose a lot of physicality when Maguire is out and Yoro comes in, especially when he's partnered next to Martinez. De Ligt if he could stay fit would give us a boost.

Yeah that’s definitely what the whole point of the thread is, go enjoy the stats you don’t understand.

I don’t think anyone can have the slightest clue if they think this team doesn’t have an issue with mobility and physicality, it’s literally not up for debate. Doesn’t mean they don’t have other qualities it’s just a blatant issue that you could watch one game and notice.

We have a mobility issue for sure. I just disagree how important it is. We dont have an athleticism issue, we have a couple of strong physical, powerful players and thats just as much physical as speed is. And especially now we signed a physical player in Baleba even the agenda driven athleticism doomers should be quieter. But here you are moaning again because you're a professional malcontent void of usefulness

A moaner moaning about moaning and criticising usefulness when they don’t even understand basics or the fact everyone doesn’t agree with them. Embarrassing.

I just said it will get exploited which it will, but you’re so desperate to moan and bitch that you decided how important I think it is. Weaknesses get exploited, simple and no need for your whining.

Think the main issue in the athleticism/physicality/mobility department for United are the 2 CBs and the LB situation. Shaw is good, but aging. Maguire is solid, but slow and aging. Martinez is very good on the ball but slow and small. Just feels like they don't suit each other or what we try to play but they're all individually good so it creates an awkward fit.

They are not ideal thats true. But you dont win football on paper. You dont have to have a squad full of young players who all fit together absolutely perfectly. Thats just something nice for football manager. For most clubs its more about finding something that works out of what you already have plus a few new signings. Thats all you need. And thats why we were able to come 3rd last season and yes, also because of the lighter schedule. Thats also a factor. But if we were as ill fitting and poor as a lot of people have made out in this thread and plenty of others we'd have been at least midtable.

I hope Santos and Baleba give us some power in midfield

We should be aiming for the title, not just a top-10 finish. That requires completely revamping the defensive line to one capable of playing a high line and dominating games. We finished third last season because we played with a mid-to-low block and relied on counter-attacks; that might get you into the top four, but it will never win you the title. Just look at the kind of signings—and the specific profiles of players—that recent champions have brought in for their defensive lines. We really need more speed, explosiveness, and agility.

Athleticism is hardly an issue with those three, and physicality even less, but pace certainly is.

But the set pieces came from a lack of athleticism.

Mobility and athleticism IMO arent the same as pure pace.

We hVe players who have all of the above but few actually use the traits with intent.

Rashford has pace and rarely if ever uses to its full potential, instead he is more happy to come inside and lay the ball off more often then not, and he certainly doesnt use them to help us press.

Shaw is similar he has atheticism and strength and when he gets a head of steam up he is hard to stop but more often then not he is passive on the ball and takes too many touches which kills the speed of our game.

Dalot on the other hand is a worse footballer but tries to use his athleticism to max. He makes driving runs and is aggressive going forward, and usually gets himself in good positions to shoot or score but unfortunately also usually messes it up. How often have you seen shaw in dalots position for a shot like the one tipped over yesterday? dorgu is similar. He made 2 chances himself by being more direct (header and shot saved at near post)

I think we need more of this type of directness tbh and thats not so much about lace but about how a player will use his physicality.

Sure. I could see us needing a completely new defence to win the league. To be favourites for it especially. But the order we replace the players also matters because its unlikely to happen in 1 window. What needs addressing right this moment is leftback else we might miss out on top 4. Then a CB or RB to improve our defensive record from last season. And then whatever still remains. I dont believe it'll all happen next summer. Possibly by Jan the next season

Problem is we are setup in a way that the wingers do not track back beyond a point and instead look for counterattacking opportunities. That makes the team defensively particularly vulnerable from fast paced transitions down the wings.

Comparing top speeds in football is often a futile exercise. The key is often acceleration over the first 5 yards which gives a player an advantage.

Indeed. And again Tielemans isn't particularly slow in that way either. The concerns about anything other than his aggression are for me pretty knee jerk and unfounded. I do worry that the softness seems to have crept back into his game a bit, but hopefully that's just him regaining match fitness rather than missing Emery to set him straight.
