It's made up.

It was reported at the time that Ashworth liked Zirkzee but there is a bunch of mouth breathers on social media who are pushing the anti-Wilcox narrative for clicks when we've gone from bottom half to top three on his watch so its ridiculous but welcome to 2026

Believe it or not, I actually heard it in real life. I work in Salford and know someone who knows someone (etc etc)

Anyway, the story is, he pushed for Zirkzee and as a kind of "finder's fee" every time he scores a goal, Wilcox gets a bonus. Not really worked out too well for him!

I mean, in fairness to whoever at Ineos pushed Zirkzee, the context of the PSR and cash problems and the expectations that Rashford, coming off a great season, and an emerging Garnacho would be able to play with him are in hindsight wrongheaded but at the time made some sense which people won't give any understanding to.

He was the one who personally pushed for Zirkzee. Says it all.

The sooner he fecks off, the better.
It was Ugarte, not Zirkzee. Zirzkee I believe was pretty agent led.

edit: just saw your latest post. That's hialrious, if true!

I've noticed it too. Vivell gets all the credit for the good signings. People ignore the fact that Vivell reports to Wilcox and he decides on who to go for. Vivell may have pushed for Sesko for example but ultimately it was Wilcox's decision to go for him over Watkins.

Same with Lammens and Martinez. The GK scout pushed for Lammens while Amorim wanted Martinez. Wilcox trusted his recruitment team and went for Lammens. Surely he deserves credit for that?

I would be shocked and a pretty concerned if we spent £80m on Morgan Rogers this summer.

There would surely be far better ways for us to be using that kinda money.

They want to raise the money to buy Rashford so may as well cut out the nonsense. We give them Rashford and they give us Rogers in return. No money involved

That's the only issue I have with it. He's a fantastic player, but if buying him they then turn around and say we don't have the funds for, say a LB, I'll be really pissed off.

I think we are getting linked with this guy because of Wilcox. Feels like he has a bias for former City academy graduates. Rogers now, Delap last season. He signed a bunch of City graduates for Southampton too like Harwood-Bellis, Bazunu, Lavia, Edozie, Larios, Charles.

I'm not saying Rogers is a bad player but no way he's worth the fees Villa would demand.

Pretty much, hard to know where the truth starts and stops. Could easily be a easy story to spin it's led by Wilcox because of the link, but could be led by Carrick for example.

From what we know factually, Vivell seems more senior player focused/international and Wilcox has great academy knowledge and is now more top of the funnel anyway. I'm not sure much credit goes to either for the more obvious signings - like Cunha, Mbuemo, trying for Semenyo but the younger talent ID, which seems a good mix of teamwork, has been a breath of fresh air - Heaven, Dorgu, Lammens are all class. Question marks are there though with trying for Delap and underestimating the suitability of Zirkzee and Ugarte.

Rogers will be linked by the media for clicks regardless of how active our interest is - I have no doubt we have spoken to his agent (we will have spoke to hundreds of players agents) but there's zero chance we're even trying to negotiate at the price Villa have reportedly set. I do like him as a player, but is he that unique? I'm sure we can find similar for half the price.

Because he was their Academy head before joining Southampton so probably a bit more biased towards them?

Having worked with them, potentially having recruited or promoted them, he probably has a good understanding of their skillset.

Believe it or not the guy knows most promising academy prospects in England

Good player but not worth that price currently and we should invest in proper midfielders. Bruno has at least 2 years more in him.

Pass. He's a good player but in this era of football you need to put up KDB or Bruno numbers to be accommodated as a number 10. Or else you're better off just playing 3 CMs.

And he's probably biased for exactly that reason. He had Delap as the first choice option for striker and look at how that went. We are all thanking our lucky stars that he rejected us to go play for Chelsea.

Half the league wanted Delap at £30m release clause value..

No real concrete evidence for this but I have a feeling their desire to fit Rogers into the budget is the reason they're reluctant to spend 115 million on one midfielder.

Yeah, all midtable clubs and us and Chelsea. Even Chelsea wanted him as a backup striker. Meanwhile we tried to replace Hojlund with Delap and with no indication of Zirkzee leaving last summer.

Personally I'm glad it worked out and we invested in Sesko but who knows who we might have signed in midfield last season with the extra £35m on top of the £70m we had earmarked

We are not willing to overpay or drawn into a transfer battle over Anderson.

I’ve followed football transfers for over 35 years and £80 million for Rogers who plays in a position we have Bruno and Cunha already in and who are both better players so would mean he’d be a squad player is overpaying, Rogers is a good player but if we’re not willing to get drawn into overpaying or a transfer battle for Anderson when midfield is by far our biggest priority then we won’t be for Rogers which is why I called the article bollocks as we don’t have the money to spend £80 million on squad players.
That's not overpaying though. That's your squad having more pressing needs. Overpaying infers you are paying more than a player is worth, which wouldn't be the case.

People need to realize Bruno is not going to be here forever. When he leaves and clubs can see we need a replacement, the fee is going to get up.

Better buy the replacement now and let him settle + we need quality players for a long season. Rogers solves many different positions across left-mid-right. Over a season usually one serious injury to a big player will happen too.

You buy Rogers, so that other players up their game and perform too. We need strong competition in the squad.

I mean we didn't even pay that for Cunha or Mbeumo who are more established and better players.

No chance we'd throw around £80 million for Rogers.

Debatable. I think Morgan Rogers have done more at a higher level than both of them had. Also two years younger. If they were equally good that would probably be worth £20 mill.

We don’t need it at whatever extortionate price Villa will be looking for

Aye yeah, point being if he was in charge of profiling and recruiting players for City's academy, pretty good chance he rates those players
Ok fair point. In fairness of the ones he took to Southampton, most are coming good. I think he’s got a good eye for young talent

Even if he is the player his price tag suggests, which I have doubts about, I would rather we spent the money on other areas of the squad.

He’s seen as a Bruno replacement, so playing him as the left attacker and then eventually moved more centrally makes sense

I know why he would be bought, I just think we don't need to buy that player this summer. But I also get if the board think it is Rogers or nobody, then they have to act now because other clubs are sniffing. My opinion is we could wait until next year to sort out a Bruno replacement and I don't think it is Rogers anyway.

That I could live with for sure, Barca have royally fecked us over with Rashford and the cheek of them lowballing us then paying £70 million for Gordon is insane

80 million for Rogers is a steal when you see what Antonio Gordón is going for.

Sign him up, quick, before Villa get wise to the new world!
