Is £80M just the standard number nowadays?
Seems every other transfer has, “would cost about 80M” slapped on it.
The range of quality that 80M would buy you is vast, it seems to go from ‘world class player’ to ‘showed a bit of potential one season’

It’s a product of the hyperinflation of the game, caused by huge broadcasting deals, and nation states and oligarchs owning football clubs. That’s just how it is now.

We as fans aren't really fussed on many of the touted top targets - is there just not many top players out there anymore? Other than Anderson doesn't seem to be much universal pull for any player
He’s a quality player, but not exactly great value.

I’m good. A quality player no doubt, but wildly inconsistent and would rather Gibbs-White if we’re looking at that position, much better value. Or shift the money to what we actually need ie Bruno G or Tonali
Nico Paz if Real don't go back in for him. Massive gamble and he clearly might not work out but he's probably the best young attacking central player in the world right now
At least let us get through this season before the press start linking us with 100s of players we're never buying.
Unless Bruno is off, we're not going near Palmer and Rogers. We've seen the DVB and Mount mistakes of trying to fit such a player in with Bruno, so unless we think we can find a midfielder so incredible that he can make up for having 2 attacking mids ahead of him - absolutely no chance.

Like the Skelly stuff. This feels agent driven. As has been mentioned many times before, Utds name often gets used for all sorts of transfers. I think gaitan is coming this summer to Utd finally.

The x-axis on the below chart is the most important one - as it shows total impact from all offensive actions i.e. dribbling, passing, crossing and shooting.
But for the sake of your post I added only the specific 'xThreat from Carrying' to the y-axis. as obviously some wingers generate more of their overall threat and attacking impact from different types of attacking play, and you seemed to want someone a bit more on the dribbly side of things.
I've said it before, but it's just obvious why Diomande is a must-buy if United can bring him in.
Rogers isn't too far off Cunha and Semenyo I suppose, and still has a couple of years to develop. Cunha is lagging a bit, though his form under Amorim will be a major factor in that.
As an aside, sadly Garnacho is still clearly one of the best winger prospects out there. United have had a few on their books.
Also, Ndiaye is not that hot.
PS Barcola is the player hidden under De Ketalaere.

Nah no chance we’re in for him, and certainly not at £80m. Priorities lie elsewhere, our attacking options are solid, investment will be elsewhere this summer I would imagine.
I also don’t think any of those clubs named will be in for him either, Chelsea are an outside possibility because their spend is so erratic but us, Arsenal or PSG are non starters.

Carrick did start by doing that too, with Dorgu and Amad tucking in. So maybe Rogers-Mainoo-DM-Amad could be the midfield next year. Bruno, Sesko, Mbuemo and Cunha compete to form the front 2 and we rotate a bunch with an extra 20 games next year (hopefully!). Cunha and Mbuemo get minutes on the wings too, and we have actual dangerous subs to bring on for the final 30 minutes of games.
So a tucked in midfielder could be what Carrick wants, if that's his plan A.
Dorgu to become a mostly full-time LB, since left-footed LWers are basically extinct and he hasn't looked good on the right.
I can actually see some logic in this. Bruno will eventually need to be replaced and he’s also good on the left. Will be so expensive though.
Feels like the sort of ill-advised over priced signing we'd make in the past, hopefully we've learnt out lesson.
I’m not sure about him. One game he looks great, but then he can be anonymous for 3 or 4 games. I don’t like that level of inconsistency, and especially at the money they’re talking. I’ve watched a few Villa games recently and if he performed like that here, I think he’d soon be getting called a flop etc.
IF we had the full back and midfield situation sorted then could understand breaking bank for him. Unfortunately we don’t so need to be prioritising that over anything else
As soon as defenders actually stop allowing him to score the same goal over and over, a lot of the shine will be gone. Seems more like a signing by Man City where money simply doesn't matter, or bizarrely recent Liverpool who seem to love wasting money.

First, Diomande is probably the first choice of evey top club in the world. And rightly so. There is not a scenario where Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, PSG go; «you know what? We would rather have Rogers». No chance.
Second, Garnacho has not developed much since 19 in areas where he really, really should have. I once hoped he could take a similar route as Salah. I think he will be as far of as Januzaj was of becoming a new Ronaldo or even Nani.
While for Rogers, I would not be surprised at all if he can become a player in the same mould as Steven Gerrard was if he moves to the right club. He is a diomand in the rough. That combination of technique, physique and mentality is very special. To pay £80 mill for that combination in a player who at 24 has already been quite good for two years in the PL is not high risk at all.
Think this is his agent building up interest in his client. Definitely a no from me.

Suspect this could be Bruno’s last season coming up though and with Mount probably even less of an option come then, we could all of a sudden been lowish on attacking midfielders, amazingly.

You're usually sound and reasoned... what's with the bolded? He's done absolutely nothing to be worth £80m.
Your general prose here is reasonable, but the conclusion is wild. If he's worth £80m, we're back in a Neymar market where top talent is worth double or more.
In a market where Mbeumo at 26 and Eze at 27 moves for £70 mill (to name two!), it is wild if Rogers at 24 moves for £80 mill? In my opinion, Rogers has been just as good and important for Villa, a way better team, as Mbeumo and Eze had for Brentford and Palace.

He had a purple patch where he looked fantastic, beyond that, his mean is modest. Also you’re using his age as an asset, which is understandable but it also means a lesser body of work and more risk his potential remains just that.
Eze had been a leading light at Palace for long enough to justify a higher fee, even if he went for too much. He was also more consistent over seasons than Rogers. Mbeumo, I don’t see your equivalence as he was consistently effective at Brentford.
The inflation in the PL needs to be brought down a peg or two; Rogers valued at £80m for very little does nothing but make the state of play even worse.
Transfer anti-wishlist! Not a bad player and maybe an option if we were looking at Bruno replacements but Villa will absolutely rinse someone for him due to him being English and a tad overrated. Not what we need right now and not at the quoted fees.
