Well now, isn't that a bit presumptuous, young ermm [checks article] Mount?
We've got to learn how to challenge for a title first before we can get back to winning one or two, and even if we did, our Invisible Mount would likely not qualify for any medal.
-a godly set of summer signings; similar to Milan’s Dutch Connection;
- a massive uptick from what’s here;
- the next great manager;
- fortune with injuries;
- either the level of everyone else being as awful as this campaign, or us morphing into an 85pt+ team
So… I’ll have some of whatever Mason’s on and gladly cheers him if he’s right!
Slot is the outlier here, carried by a godly season from the best player in the league last season and a team following Klopp’s principles - you might as well have Klopp *2.
You’re going to have to disprove the quoted post because it’s clear you need those things, or abomination of season across the board, like this one, which almost certainly won’t happen again.

You’re not providing a counter argument here. I’ll leave it at that, because the one not great manager on list spanning almost 10yrs has perhaps the greatest single season from a player in that span absolutely carrying him.

That's a pipedream right now. A reasonable goal for next season would be:
-3rd in the league
-Deep runs in the domestic cups
-Final 16 of the Champions League
We've made tremendous strides this season but we've also been flattered by one of the weakest tables the EPL has seen in a long time. I expect Liverpool and Chelsea will be much improved next season so I think it will really be a battle to stay in the top 4/5.
The reality is that with the possibility of like 20 extra matches next season we are nailed on for an injury crisis at some point and we already need to add probably 5+ players to the squad this summer just to not lose ground in terms of who we're losing and who we're gonna be forced to keep without being able to count on them. And that doesn't even touch on the potential for disruption/adjustment if we bring a new manager in.
Finishing in a CL spot once again would be massive; we need to get back to being a perennial CL club.
A reasonable goal for Mount personally would be to stay fit for a few months and actually contribute and I'm saying that as someone who likes the lad a lot. I think he's a quality player who has only been able to show flashes of it in tiny cameos. He seems very professional but surely he knows United fans are very disappointed in his transfer in general, he's now one of the very top earners at the club, he needs to do something and then he needs to do an awful lot more of it. I've personally written him off. Anything he can provide now on the run in is just a bonus before the next inevitable setback
Mount must be on some strong pain killers these days.
Fair enough, claims can be had if we didnt go into this season with Amorim, we possibly could have had a chance. Arsenal have had next to no competition for long periods this season due to City stop starting every second game.
But to think we could next season. Nah, we have to get really lucky with signings in the summer. How are we realistically going to replace Casemiro.
Ugarte is going to probably leave, Casemiro gone. We already needed a midfielder before any of them left, how are we going to find 3? You can't win drag race if the pistons are fecked.
No chance. Our best possible 11 is decent if a little unbalanced but look at our backup options if anyone gets injured or loses form; Zirkzee, Ugarte, Malacia, Bayandir... not top 4 level never mind title challengers.
Probably need 5 or 6 signings this summer. A couple of marquee names in midfield plus some shrewd squad improvements.

BBC: "I've won the Champions League already, so I have a goal of winning the Premier League. Can we do that? Yes, I think we can. It may seem a little bit far away, but you must have that mentality to really push yourself as a group. We've shown what we can do against the big teams already; Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, so we've done it. Now it's about doing it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and doing it more consistently in the Premier League. Hopefully, I will be a massive part of that moving forward next season. It's a goal: I want to win the Premier League."
Recently we've seen Bruno reportedly waiting to see what the club do in the market before committing to next season as he wants a viable chance to win a major trophy. We've seen Maguire talk about major reinforcements in the summer after signing his contract. And obviously Berrada has that project 2028 or whatever it's called.
This all suggests that either there is collective delusion at the club or we're going to see major investment in top quality this summer.
"He's been brilliant for me," he said of Carrick.
"As a midfielder, I looked up to him when he played. He was an absolute maestro which is something I've always looked to do.
"It was difficult at the beginning because Michael came in and I got injured, so I missed a few games.
"But he said: 'I want you back, you're a massive part of the team and when you're around the lads you obviously have a big effect', so I know where I stand within the group.
"It's not my call but I really like the way he works; the way he sees the game.
"He's very level-headed. Very calm, very knowledgeable about the game.
"He knows what he wants going into games. He will do his analysis on the opposition and talk us through it on the pitch.
"We're in a really good place. You can see that from the way we play and how we've performed since he's been in.
"Even in big games where we've probably written off a little bit, we've come up with massive performances that have really kicked us on."
Mount may only have watched Carrick from a distance before but he knew all about his assistant Steve Holland from working with him at Chelsea and England.
In a coaching team relatively light on experience, Holland seems to be the glue that keeps it together.
Mount is a huge fan, and recalls a story from the early days of Carrick's reign - his first two matches were against Manchester City and Arsenal - as an example of what the 55-year-old brings.
"He's got such a football brain," he said.
"If he sees something, he'll know what to say, and he's not afraid to say it.
"In either the first or second game after they took charge, he was taking a team talk and saying: 'Look we're going to win – we're going to win this game.' That was the confidence from day one.
"There's probably not many in world football that have his resume and his experience, is there?
"Maybe he goes under the radar a little bit but he is very tactically astute.
"He's always there to give the gaffer a few tips on positionings or if he sees something that needs to get changed, he will say it.
"They're always talking, which is super important.
"The last game, I'm on the bench and the gaffer will come back and speak to Steve and get his opinion on things.
"It's been very clear. Everyone knows what they're needed to do."
We havent been close to challenge, nevermind winning the league since Sir Alex retired.
We wont next season either, unless we have a great summer transfer wise, Carrick turns out to be a top manager, the other top teams struggle and we stay injury free. It is very unlikely, i think top 4 and a good CL run is the best we can hope for. That would be a good base for challenging the season after.
Whilst I don't think it's realistic, I also do not think it's bad that we start raising standards, and expectations of what the club does in the market along the way.
We win it. Arsenal if they miss out the league this season they will broken.
City without a KDB is always suspect.
Liverpool/Chelsea are all doomed.
Even this season many games slipped from our hands which with Carrick you can be sure we would have won it.
Not even by necessarily playing better but just by the logic of holding on to leads. This season under Amorim we had lost 10 points from winning positions.
Famously game against Bournemouth 4-4 where we led 3 times on the said match.
Being unable to hold on leads shows coach management issues.
Whilst I don't think it's realistic, I also do not think it's bad that we start raising standards, and expectations of what the club does in the market along the way.
Totally agrre with you, but we need at least 2-3 consecutive top finishes before any title talk. Knowing us since 2013, we can easily finish in 8th place next season.
As a generally optimistic individual I’m inclined to agree with Mason.
Will it be a reasonable aim at the start of next season? Even not knowing our transfers I’d say no. Top 4 would be for me and good performances and qualification from the group stage in the champions league, maybe.
However if we do get good players in and have a good start then it’s all to play for. Gaining momentum is something we’ve struggled with and I think it can alter thinking. However I won’t be mad or surprised if we struggle and the base expectation’s I’d have really is to build on the positives since the change in management.
