Sweet video with Essien watching. Say what you want about Mourinho, but if you give him everything he'll never forget it. For every Luke Shaw, there's countless examples like this.

I think Mourinho had that relationship with Materazzi.

I loved Essien as a player. In his prime, he was a beast. I always wished we had signed him.

but Umuh Muchtar (Persib's manager - Essien last team in Indonesia) doesn't love him.

Mourinho falls out with his players all the time is a myth.

You dont win what he won without the players playing for the manager.

Yeah, his rapid decline was sad to see.

He was a powerhouse and had everything. Unreal player.

"He was not my player, he's my son." You can tell that Mourinho is being genuine here. Great video.

Essien and Drogba are 2 of my favourite PL players of all time. Gave everything they had every time they stepped out on the pitch in a Chelsea shirt.

I would take him at United even now. Surely moves more than Matic. One year contract should be fine. We need to win titles now, not plan for the future...

Yes, a 35 year old Michael Essien is surely the key to us reclaiming the title.

I dont get this plan for the future. For a team like united any year is potentially our year.

You dont develop players for 5 years and hope they become ronaldo or giggs or beckham, thats for midtable teams.

Sometimes you happened to find a rare gem among the youth and it's probably worth it to give them the game time needed for development. But not giving it to just simply anyone.

Saf didnt sell ince and co because he prefers youth, but because he has an extremely gifted class of 92 that he predict will be better than ince soon, not the other way around.

5 years developing youth player means 5 titles goes to our rival.

Hearing Mourinho speak like that has actually given me a new perspective on him.

I used to think that he was selfish, that when he expects his players to run through walls for the team, it was for his own benefit but I'm watching that and I'm seeing something else. I think he just genuinely values that attitude highly in a person. You hear him talk like that about Essien, where he came from, understanding who he is and why he would "die for his team mates", he just genuinely has a lot of respect for that and sees it as virtuous.

I think that's why he just doesn't connect with players like Luke Shaw. Going by what all his ex-coaches say, he's immature and incredibly frustrating to coach as he just doesn't apply himself. I think from Mourinho's point of view, it's not just the players like that that aren't worth investing in, it's the people too. He's happy to help people who will help themselves.

Mourinho’s always been like that though. You can hear a lot of ex players would run through walls for him. It’s no surprise, to me anyway, that he tends to fall out more often than not, with the players who has sort of questionable attitude/commitment - I’m not lying the blame at players for this, but mourinho values that dedication, loyalty, trust, hard work and discipline above just about anything else.
