Myles Lewis-Skelly

He played the 6 for Arsenal, he replaced Zubimendi
According to Transfermarket, out of 35 matches he played in 2025/2026 he played 30 games as a left back (!), only 4 games as a defensive midfielder and one game as a central midfielder. So, technically he did play as #6, but him playing #6 is not much better than Licha playing #6. Based on his existing history, he is an LB, not a #6

We have only spent ~80M on Carrick so far, despite him being a new coach, having gotten us to #3 and deserving to be well-supported. That, compared to Amorim getting 200M+ last Summer, and Ten Hag getting almost 300M the season he was close to getting sacked.

Carrick deserves a proper LB and specialist, top quality #6, not an LB who Arsenal are willing to give up and can also maybe play #6, when shit hits the fan...

He's been given games at leftback, like Darren Fletcher had the opportunity to play right wing when he was really a CM. Most likely as he gets a bit older he will want to play his favourite position. It could change of course, but he was a midfielder in development

They’re never selling him really. The kid literally just started a CL final and has over 80 appearances for them already. This is just speculation based on Bruno G joining them but they fail to account for Bruno G being almost a decade older than him as well. Having a 19 year old of that quality who can continue to grow and be ready to take over when eventually Bruno G starts regressing is exactly what you’d want.

Plus on top of that they’ve already sold Norgaard to Everton as well which would leave them well short even if they were to sell him. No chance of this happening.
That makes total sense for them, I suppose where they might listen is to him - he may have a strong desire to go to Euro 2028. In that hypothetical, being promised more game time at Man United wouldn't be a bad place to land. Timing is everything...

If I'm them, I wouldn't want to sell him, but if his desire is to move, that can be really tricky with young players.

I don't see this happening FYI.

I don't know him well. I don't watch Arsenal when they do not play us. Just saying what Transfermarket shows, and assuming they are not so totally wrong that they are showing 30 games at LB and only 4 as #6.

Unless they are out of their mind, and the numbers are totally wrong, if you play 30 games as LB and only 4 as DM, you are most likely a LB? No?

If we were bringing MLS in as a defensive midfielder then 100% yes but it it’s as a rotational option or back up at left back then I’d rather use the money on Hall, ideal world we’d bring both MLS and Hall in as they’ve got massive potential but lots of PL experience and Ineos love players with sell on value.

Interestingly I pretty much havd the opposite opinion of this. I don't see how we could be bringing him in to be a midfielder. Why would he go from being 1 of 4 at Arsenal to being 1 of 4 at United? Unless he is much more confident of beating out Santos, Mainoo & Tielemans.

For me, the value of MLS (other than being a very good player) is that he would provide us cover for two positions that we need. However I think left back is the much higher priority, given we have a 31 year old, previously injury prone Shaw and Dorgu who hasn't played there under Carrick. If he isn't suited to, good enough, or willing to play left back then his value to the squad is greatly diminished. I don't think we can afford to pay £60m+ on a midfielder who isn't a "guaranteed" upgrade on what we already have.

That said, I think Arsenal would be crazy to sell him and I don't see him pushing for a move, so bit of a non-starter

Well if he wants to make a push for euro 2028 and finds himself not playing football at all next season that of course could be a conversation for next summer. But not something I’d see him push for at all anytime soon. So far he has been playing quite regularly considering his age and he certainly does have a future there.

He’s always been seen as a future midfielder for them. It’s just been easier to break into the team in that lb position. Which he’s been inverting from as well.

That sounds like a lot of "if, but and maybes" when we need to be signing a top specialist #6. In midfield, we already have Santos who is not a finished product, Tielemans who is not a specialist #6 and has scary injury record, Mainoo who is certainly a #8, and Mount who has never been able to stay fit. I don't know why we think bringing in a 19-year old who has mostly been playing as LB in his recent, senior season is an appropriate replacement for multiple-Champions-League-winning Casemiro

I’ve been saying this won’t happen. Not because he lacks quality to play in midfield. But because they won’t want to sell him.

He’s a left back as far as senior football goes. Whether he’s made it we’ll known or fans are just aware of his youth level football.. it’s been well publicised that he wants to play CM and the last few games he’s played (probably those 4) he’s played it really well and it looks like he’ll probably stay there.

Obviously none of us know what conversations we’ve had with him, but if the rumours are true, I’d assume we’d be signing him to play as the No. 6 rather than at left-back. The fact he can also cover LB just makes him an even more attractive signing.

Is the Fletcher reference too old for you perhaps? Maybe you werent watching back then, its quite a while ago now. We had a spot free on the right of a 4-4-2 so Sir Alex took the chance to get our young central midfielder experience on the right even though he wasnt going to put good crosses into the box like we'd been used to with Beckham as a real right winger. Sometimes an opportunity comes up and a young player who otherwise would not be getting first team minutes is used to ease them into the team. He had played left back before, but central midfield was his real position. He's left footed... Its quite straight forward - he could fill in for them at left back so he did. It doesnt mean its his best position. It means Arsenal have a lot of players in his best position so if he wasnt playing leftback he'd be a barely used midfielder.

I think he get the reference. It’s more the relevance when you consider many players who have done the very said thing your speaking of but remained in that position.

G.Nevllle, A.Cole, Alexander-Arnold and so on.

Gary Neville went from CB to RB. Its still a defending role. Its a bit different to being a midfielder playing leftback because you have a left foot.

Thank you.

I remember Fletcher thing. I wish I was too young to not remember :) I just don't know if they were doing the same thing at Arsenal, however. Especially since it was very unusual even when we did it with Fletcher. Was wondering if maybe Arteta just thought he was better as a LB...

Bukayo Saka played as a left-back during his breakthrough 2019/20 season for Arsenal at the age of 18 years old as well.

He might, thats possible. I just dont think Skelly does. It would be quite quick to give up on playing midfield. But its possible too

Excellent player but I don't think we need him at this point. His potential availability came a bit too late in the window for us.

LB: I just think we need a guy that can first and foremost provide that overlap when Cunha / Rashford play LW.

MLS is an "Arteta LB" -- i.e., a midfielder in disguise playing at LB in the mould of a Tomiyasu, Zinchenko, Calafiori etc. Their job is to invert into midfield and use their movement to create chaos.

Also yes let's not fund Arsenal's warchest. They can keep an unhappy player on the bench or sell to a European team for not as much money as we'd pay.

Are there any real rumours of United being interested in MLS? If so, would you rather United get him and in-turn fund Arsenal's pursuit of Vini?
(I'm not saying the money is comparable, but MLS would be pure profit for them, wouldn't he?)

Why would Arsenal’s transfers impact us? The whole point of us buying players is to improve us - we cannot stop other clubs from improving, they will attempt to do that anyway, it’s the whole point of a transfer window.

He's not a LB. He was a CM in the youth academy, played LB as all our LBs got injured (similar to how Saka broke out). Then last season he struggled at LB a lot, so Arteta benched him and MLS said he spent winter training back as a CM with the first team, then the last couple months of the season he was re-introduced as a CM.

I can't see him going back to LB now, only if we're desperate again and everyone is injured.

He's 19 and earmarked for the future of their midfield, Guimares is 29 before the turn of the year, Norgaard has been sold and Zubimendi was underwhelming last season.

They will just make him wait a year or two while giving him enough appearances to keep him happy and then he can start to take over when Zubi and Rice are 29 and Guimares is 31.

You don't sell your future stars while you're at the top of the game. If they were struggling I could see it but he's going to be a lot more patient while they're winning the league and Challenging for the Champions league.

Hes ahead of Zubamendi already considering Arteta seemed to just forget about him towards the end of last season.

Id be somewhat hopeful he wont want to be a squad player for another season or two and going from a starter in the Champions League final to being 3rd or 4th choice sgain might be the incentive to go be first choice somewhere else.

But yeah, Arsenal selling him would be mental.

Footballers are human beings with their own thoughts and emotions.

Being a star player starting most games and doing well, to falling out of favour and the club continuing to invest in your position is going to cause issues.

'Sending out on loan' might be the FM move but is that actually what the player wants? Wouldn't that just be a further signal the club doesn't value you and you should find the club that meets your ambitions and is willing to back you, if you can find one.

Knowing the player will be unhappy and potentially devalue if they kick off or have a bad loan or become more obviously expendable after the season might the club not look to sell at a premium if the price is right

Yeah they won't make same error Chelsea could have ended up making in terms of selling Santos

I think it's all about if Arteta learns to rotate a bit more.

He actually did last season in a few positions, he shared out the minutes a lot better among the attacking players last season.

The midfield position he was a lot more cautious about rotating, but I just don't think he had any trust in Norgaard and Lewis-Skelly at the time. He even admitted himself he was wrong and should have gave MLS his shot in midfield earlier.

I think once you have earned his trust, then you do get an important role in the rotation. Hopefully with his performances at the end of last season, so far in pre season and the fact guys like Rice and Zubimendi are back a bit later, he'll continue to earn that trust this season.

Yeah his feet are firmly under the table at Arsenal now

Odegaard - Eze
Rice - Merino
Bruno G - Zubimendi

You are already full stacked in midfield. I’m not sure how are you going to give him minutes in midfield? He would question himself and Arteta, how am I going to get minutes with all of these players in the squad plus now the club just spent huge money on Bruno G?

The left back is the only position he will get minutes as you only have Calafiori. However, Hincapie is capable to cover the left back spot so that’s also another competition.

He will have been told where he fits into this team when Guimaraes comes in and would imagine he's happy

How is he going to be happy with Guimaraes comes in? He started in CL final which re-built the faith from the manager but that faith is fading again after the club spent big money on Guimaraes. Arsenal will need to sell Zubimendi at least to even give a rotation minutes to MLS in midfield.

I think we should take advantage of this situation. Approach the player and tell him that you will compete with Shaw in left back spot, you will get lot of minutes in left back and midfield too, and will become our starting XI left back next season and for the next decade when Shaw’s contract expired.

Might work, but if he wants to be a midfielder then I'm not sure he'd want to sign for a new club as backup leftback. Maybe as first choice. However he might look at Mainoo, Tielemans and Santos and think he can play better than some of them given the chance in midfield. I personally don't rate him as highly as Mainoo but he might think he can outdo him by the end of the season.

Think his preferred position is midfield but would get plenty of minutes in midfield and as left back. I would be more than happy if he is our third midfielder this summer .

MLS, Mainoo, Tielemans, Santos is really a solid base.

Big difference between being backup and competing. Backup is like Buttner being backup of Evra with Evra kept playing most of the time. Competing means he will have 50:50 chance to play means we can play him in the league while playing Shaw in champions league then guarantee him starting XI left back spot next season as Shaw’s contract will be expired.

We have no idea what position he wants to be so it’s worth a shot to convince him to come here. One thing for sure that he will get more minutes in here than in arsenal now.

He ended the season ahead of Zubimendi in the pecking order and he might feel he's 3rd in the hierarchy which means he'll play loads as Rice and Guimaraes get rotated or injured he'll be first one to benefit.

I also don't want him as left back, and I don't even think he sees himself as a left back. If anything that idea might put him off.

I like him as a left back, but if we are buying him as a midfielder, im not sure he is giving us anything we don't already have.
I'm the complete opposite. I like overlapping full backs who cross the ball and that wasn't his game when played at full back.

In midfield, I'm not convinced he has much of a passing range which isn't ideal, it's a similar issue to Mainoo. But I think he has good defensive and ball retention qualities. What he gives us in midfield that we don't already have is an extra option, as we're a player short at the moment if we want two-players-per-position.

We have progressive passers now so if he has the defensive attributes we need to at least make a play. Now whether he is gonna be open to the idea is another question. Ideally they don't sell Zubimendi otherwise I can see him feeling confident of more mins at Arsenal.

I agree, I also like overlapping full backs, especially with wide forwards/wingers being inverted.

But the blueprint for other big teams in the Prem has been for full backs who can push into the midfield.

Refreshing to see Spain play with two true full backs who wanted to push high and wide.

He struggled to get enough minutes when he was behind Zubimendi in pecking order the whole time last season. Him being behind Bruno G in pecking order will only make it worse because Bruno G is a better midfielder than Zubimendi.

It's hard for me to judge MLS as I have very little sample watching him due to lack of minutes in PL so I'm not going to pretend that I am right about him having talent as left back. But everytime I watched him, he looks similar to Nuno Mendes that both have pace and can carry the ball forward, which makes me think he has assets to be top left back.

Arsenal fans are almost unanimous on him being a midfielder, and much worse as a left-back.
