Fred is no holding midfield player, so that midfield would get destroyed. Even if De Jong was there in his place, it could still be argued that it's lacking a true defensive midfielder but I would like to see it tried. Martial over Ronaldo because I have little time for the latter, so I would force him to earn his place back.

I read somewhere yesterday that ten Hag spoke about us looking for forwards and midfielders which suggest he sees Martinez as a midfielder. I am not really sure but I can't see him dropping Maguire after making him captain or Varane. I think our line up could be something like this:

-------------------De Gea
Dalot---Maguire---Varane---Shaw
---------Martinez----De Jong
----------------Fernandes
------Sancho----------Eriksen/New forward
-------------------Martial

Feel like our squad is quite suited to the 5-3-2 now, but no indication ten Hag is into it. Anyway:

DDG

Dalot
Varane
Lindelof/Maguire/Bailly
Martinez
Shaw

Fred
Eriksen
Bruno

Sancho
Rashford/Martial

For its this, sure Ronaldo can score goals but it will be at the detriment of the team.
Hopefully he leaves, he isn't the future and would just be disruptive at this point, ETH litmus test.

It depends on formation.

I do think, without a DM, that we might be better with a 3-5-2. But we haven't been trying it out so I imagine it'll be a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1

De Gea
Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw / Malacia
Eriksen, Fred*, Fernandes
Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford / Martial

*Obviously, I'm hoping that becomes de Jong. And Fred would start instead of Eriksen or Fernandes in some games.

In game on the front foot it should be something like

--------------------------DDG
---------------Maguire----Martinez
Dalot --------------Frenkie ------------Shaw
---------------Eriksen--------Fred--------
-------Fernandes----------------------Sancho
--------------------------Martial

Out of possession, should transform to a 4-4-2 with Eriksen on the right and Sancho on the left. Eriksen likes working the right channel which means Fernandes will have space to move into the middle.

There are doubts in this line up. Is Dalot good enough, will Shaw be fit and up to his best? Will De Jong sign? Which Martial are we getting?
will Ronaldo stay?
I’m going to be optimistic and say it’ll all be fine

Against most teams:

De Gea

Shaw
Martinez
Varane (if he’s injured then…Maguire…sigh).
Dalot

Zidane
McTominay
Fernandes

Rashford
Martial
Sancho

I chose McTominay over Fred because people forget we need some sort of height presence in there, someone to win those rival goalie’s kicks or long balls from their defenders, and well “weaker” teams are more likely to hoof it.

I chose Zidane because he’s absolutely fecking brilliant and excites me more than any signing we’ve made or could possibly make in this market.
Seems good enough to me, so that means he’s old enough.

Subs:
Heaton, Bailly, Lindelof, Malacia, Fred, Eriksen, Savage/Garner, Pellistri/Elanga, Ronaldo

Bench may not look great at first but there are several game changers here, Eriksen being a great passer as well as a set piece specialist, Pellistri who is of unknown quality at PL level but can provide width and pace, obviously Ronaldo, and lets not forget Eric “Beckenbauer” Bailly.

Against top teams:

De Gea

Shaw
Martinez
Varane
Dalot

Fred
McTominay/Garner
Eriksen/Zidane

Fernandes
Rashford/Martial
Sancho

Would like to see Fernandes playing on the left in the “Pogba” role against strong teams and some away games, the role that Pogba played some of his better football for us under Ole.

Pass them and press them to death. Hopefully De Jong for Fred too, and Igbal in the squad ahead of McTominay taking his minutes.

I know someone is going to find this dubious for various reasons. I don’t think Ten Hag dislikes Fred or McTominay, actually, but I think he intends to play Eriksen and Bruno both, and Martinez might give them better protection than either of McFred, as he is more defensively disciplined and reads defensive situations better. There is a question of his stamina in a CM spot, but both Bruno and Eriksen has great stamina. What they lack is defensive positional discipline and defensive duel power 1-1. Martinez has that. Bit speculative, but what the hey.

Martial and Rashford are two conundrums, but at their previous best level, there would be no question. So I’m a bit hopeful that a full preseason under Ten Hag might be what both need to get back to that level - even if their problems are very different from each other.

It’s also incredible seeing Martial’s rehabilitation on here. He was a wastrel unworthy of cleaning Bebe’s boots last season in here and now he’s knocking Ronaldo out of the starting XI. Amazing.

I’m interested to see how patient and/or ruthless ETH will be.

I don’t believe a lot of last season’s players will successfully transition to a press-resistant possession-based team. I’d expect Shaw, Maguire, Dalot, and McFred to have An especially hard time. Hell, probably everyone bar Sancho and Bruno. I think our best XI won’t necessarily feature all our “best” players because the new boys know how to play better as a team.
