Worrying that all fans on here are United in our distrust of old Matic and yet he still gets games like today. He is a squad player at absolute best these days.

What other options? Pogba was used where he got 4 assists last week and Mctominay wasn’t fit to start. So the “many other options” are basically Donny who clearly isn’t trusted.
VDB
Pogba

that’s two like for like positonally.

then if we ever ditch our negative CM por against weaker teams which is 100% why we draw so many games, Mata would come in for me in front of a single DM/CM, Lingard would offer more. I don’t get the reluctance to play a team with the idea of creating and scoring and not setting up to not concede as a priority when it’s a team that is so much weaker.

How Matic continues to be played by OGS is beyond me. It’s obvious his legs are gone and his movement, be it tactical or an habit, with dropping back as a third CB in the build up both isolates Fred(or whoever is partnering him) in the midfield and leaves us with a gaping whole in the middle offensively as it’s limiting our CB’s in the build because they lack progressive passing options.
Surely VdB must be a better replacement for McT, as he’s more of a like-for-like-option ish, even though he might not be good enough..

Terrible performance today. He is totally past it, we need to replace him very quickly

This wasn't the game for him. Away against a team that can press the ball very well.

Our midfield is so bad at time I'm starting to wonder if Lindelof would be able to play there.

Ole said in the post match presser he thought Matic "was excellent"
This is worrying. Was he directly asked about him? If not, it is extremely concerning that the manager can not see something as obvious as his atrocious performance today.

It was somewhere between bemusing and humiliating how many times he touched the ball successively, by himself, and then knocked it beyond himself to get dispossessed or put his side completely on the back foot; there felt like an exact point in the game where he realised it was beyond him and started to make himself unavailable as an outlet ball for his ‘fellow’ midfielders.

He cannot play against any sort of press; I’m not even sure he has it in him to play in the PL anymore, let alone for Manchester United. He really should get himself off to Italy where he would be accommodated. Moreover, he should be used even less than Mata for us because he’s a liability.

It's the last question of the presser, around the 7 minute mark. The question is basically would you have done anything differently, and he volunteers the Matic was excellent part.

Because there's a level of masochism at this club that makes 50 Shades of Gray sound like a reading of Cinderella.
"On 17 March 2020, Manchester United announced that they would be triggering a clause in Matic's contract to extend it by another year. His contract had been due to expire in the summer of 2020, but this means he will enter his 4th year with the club.On 6 July 2020, Matić signed a new three-year contract with the club, securing his future until 2023"

Not only did we trigger an extra year, we are gonna be stuck with him till 2023, at which point he will retire and join the coaching staff.

I can't think of a team Matic is less suited to than a hyper-energetic, high pressing Southampton team that has a chip on their shoulder cause we stuffed them 9-0 last time we played.

You can see how tired he was in this game, ffs even in 30 mins of the first half he couldn't sprint. He rarely closing down any Southampton players and just took zonal marking position because he knew anyone would outrun him at this point.

He's done.

Slow around the pitch, second to every ball, requiring 3 to 4 touches of the ball, consistently fouling...

It's painful watching him play.

Good game. He's decent when the midfield isn't scrappy. McTominay and Fred are like soldiers on a battlefield. Matic is the veteran general.

For every good pass/move he had a bad pass or bad reaction. Not sure if that is a confidence thing or he is physically past it. If he is physically past it then it's time to retire or go where the pace is slower. Some questionable tackles and defensive positions where he totally was bypassed. He just doesn't have pace to recover when not positioned well.

Thought he was rather poor. Gave the ball away a lot and got caught in possession a lot. Scott should go straight in for him when he’s fit.

He's very good at passing directly through midfield when fresh; as soon as he tired in the second half, he was done for.

He has a role to play, that much is clear, but his in-game management has to be spot on - once he's spent, he's a liability and a passenger, so it's on the management to pre-empt that and get him off the pitch beforehand.

He showed today how important it is to get someone who can pass through the lines, though. Further up the pitch, his need for multiple, extra touches let him down, but from deeper, his passing would be such a massive asset over the course of a season.

A 26-year old Matic in this team would be golden. The Matic we have now can probably manage 60 PL minutes per week.

His passing was very good in the first half. Correct decision by Ole to start him because he knew Newcastle would sit back at OT. Faded a bit in the second which was understandable.

Not an awful game by his current geriatric standards, but its clear we desperately need to sign a midfielder. We can't go the whole season with him as our DM.

He wasn't as bad as people made him out to be. Not great but not shit either.

Decent first half, back to awful Matic second half. Few very significant mistakes from a defensive midfielder, really exposing us.

Also seemed utterly unwilling to try and win headers from opposition goal kicks. Given he's one of our tallest players, it's really strange.

"Martial...He's isolated Skrtel here..."
He was one of our best players in the first half but tired in the second which hurt his already limited mobility. But watching him in the first just makes me wish we had the 2017 version in this team. Title favorites if we did, he brings so much more composure and forward passing ability compared to our other options.

Decent today. Good passing, but he very often slows down our play to much.

Thought he was one of our better players on the first half. Went to pot a bit in the second but not a bad performance by any stretch

He was better than i expected him to be in the first 45 minutes.. after that he started to play as expected, bad. Really need to get an upgrade over him soon.

Wasnt terrible. I felt though it was overkill in the first half, himself and Pogba just staying back in MF. At least one should have went forward. Pogba went more forward in the second half alright.

Doesn't have the legs for this league any more.

McT can't come back soon enough, and a CM in winter transfer window is priority.
