obviously we need to strengthen at the back, who would be our choice out of arguably 2 of the best defenders i nitaly and the world, nesta or cannavaro?
ill personally go for nesta because of his age,i think hes 2 years younger than cannavaro. :D :D

Great - another boring pointless subject.

Perhaps we could sign up Shevchenko in exchange for Yorke also.

I'm willing to pay the full fee for Sheva and give Yorke away on top of that

These two are actually possible transfers. Parma are struggling and its only a matter of time until Cannavaro leaves unless he does a Le Tissier.

Lazio may try to flog some of their players because they are in serious debt and their wage bill is supposedly the biggest in the world.

So I wouldnt say either of these would be dreaming. Of course Real Madrid are probably more likely destinations.

I'd love to see either one of them.

Yes it's possible. David May plus 40m for Nesta.

Or else we could buy Kevin Hofland and Phillipe M. for a combined 18m and be set for years along with O'Shea and Brown.

You seem convinced at the quality of these youngsters. I woud love to see them here but in some ways its even less likely that we get those guys.

They are being very loyal to their teams and are as yet probably not the finished article.

Everynow and then a time comes when a club has to offload one of its biggest players despite protests etc etc i.e. Stam, Fowler, Veron.

I dont think its too far out to think that soon (Summer), one or both of these will leave their clubs.

On te other hand Mexes and Hofland may not leave for a couple of years, they may come here and prove to be too inexperienced or they may get snapped up by someone else - we always miss out on the top young stars it seems.

For now we should get an experienced CB who can help us NOW and next year. These guys are for the next five years, not for NOW. Nonetheless I wouldnt complain...

Nesta is only a dream (sorry for you but Lazio does not have debts, don't believe in what you read...), but you could buy Cannavaro. It's really possibile, even if he's expensive and not so young.

The answer to our defensive inconsistencies lies in allowing the current back four (along with O'Shea) a chance to grow into their roles. Throwing money into players like Nesta or Cannavaro (who are increasingly more reputation than substance these days) will not necessarily help us and could set us back alot of money. I would be more inclined to go for players who are perhaps not known as well, and yet relatively inexpensive and still hungry for trophies. Hofland, Mexes, Chivu, Tihenen, Collocini etc.

why does everyone rate Cannavoro so highly? everytime ive seen him ive never thought he'd be worth the 20+ mill it would take to get him. Nesta would be worth it, but cant ever see him leaving Lazio. He's another Maldini, one club man.

Why does everyone think it will take millions to get a decent defender? There are players out there more than capable, look at Liverpool. As much as it pains me to say it they got a world class Hypia for next to nothing..

You're right. Nesta is a Lazio man and I think Cannavaro is only a good defender... It's for this that I was sooo happy that Lazio bought Stam and not Cannavaro. ;)

Lazio are lucky. They probably have the best centre half pairing in the world right now. They might chop and change players around them but I cant see them changing that pairing for quite a while!

agreed 100%.

Canna must be one of the most over rated CB's in the world... Nesta will never leave Italy for England..certainly not in his prime. Samuel is another good CB, i'd love to see him team up with Seba Veron..my guess is he'll cost an arm and a leg.....

My choices:

Hofland 15mil

Chivu 11mil.

oh well, I know we're really lucky! Stam is out but we have Couto, another good defender. In any case, we're lucky especially because we have Nesta (for free!) :D :D :D

Luisa, how has he been playing this season? better than Nesta?

It's impossible playing better than Nesta :p ;)

I think Samuel is a great CB, but he has not the same Nesta class. Nesta is simply perfect and without him Lazio defense is NOTHING. For me Samuel makes too many fouls.

not been too impressed with nesta this season

Agreed that I'd rather we unearth a cheap quality player i.e. Hyppia, but thats not likely.

A young player will not solve our problems right now, someone like Nesta can lead the line and he is the best in the world - I dont see why anyone wouldnt want him.

I actually think he will go to Real or someone like that in the Summer.

Allowing our current players to grow into their roles is my long-term goal, but right now we need a world class CB who can help to keep out the likes of Owen. We currently have NO world class CB, whats more, we have a bunch of accident-prone CBs who have cost us dearly. These young defenders dont command the defence, which is what we need.

If we dont buy anyone new, put O'Shea and Brown in together, they wont be shy to boss each other about etc and may be more effective.

i've seen him play twice and each time he's been crap, i was wondering if they where off days.. but jens seems to think his whole season has been crap...

One of the best defenders ive seen is Arthur Numan of Rangers .Any time i see highlights of the Scottish league he looks outstanding.Like all dutch players excellent skills and distribution, but most important{for a defender}he can tackle. If Untd.could ever make it happen he would be a supberb addition.
