The problem with keeping Carrick, as well as he's done, is that he's never proven he can succeed at a high level (which surely affects player belief), and also, I don't really see anyone suggesting that he might win us a league.

And if he's not going to win the league, what's the point? Get someone better.

They aren't going to do that so best to just accept it

Not sure what the last line suggests? United just gave Amorim a huge opportunity..
It suggests that the Chelsea opening is much more straight forward while the presumption surrounding the United job is that it's Carrick's to lose right now

The issue is there’s no guarantee anyone can win the league. The hope would be solidifying us as regular CL participants which will greatly assist us in building a squad good enough to challenge for the league.

Difficult decision of course, but it probably feels like Carrick is the man for this point in time.
Then it's up to the board to recruit as well for midfield as they did for attack last summer.

Oh yeah it's clearly straight forward compared to Utd

Doesn't sound there is plans to sign him a third CM, so it may not be quite the same level of overhaul

We've had a strange blindspot and made bad decisions in midfield for such a long time. It's very hard to see us making 2 cracking signings, but think we'd all take that.

We all know that a huge reason for being able to hit 3rd is playing so few games this season, so you have to hope the board realise quality AND numbers have to increase.

I think the trouble is they see signing a third midfield player as blocking route to first team for academy player, however they shouldn't be looking at it like that at all

Yep. If we do get back to being a team capable of winning the league, it'll almost certainly have to happen in phases anyway. I'd be really surprised if we demonstrate a level of ambition in the transfer market that facilitates us getting back to that level in one summer.

As long as nothing crazy happens in our last 5 matches, Carrick feels like a relatively safe appointment heading into next season. Outside of Luis Enrique, there really aren't many other candidates that jump off the page so there's no real reason to twist. If we don't like what we see from him further down the line, we always have the option to change it.

Only if the contract is short enough to do that, still got this feeling of them giving him a Rosenior length deal

While I agree anyone right now including Carrick is a risk, Ineos not even interviewing other more experienced managers is just insane.

I'd give him a one year contract - he's done fantastic but keeping the seat warm for Tuchel or Enrique feels like the smart move

I fear INEOS will go all in on him
Admittedly I was for that with Ole after PSG - "bringing back the good times" etc - and Carrick's first few games were just as legendary, if not more. The turnaround has been fantastic but I feel like it's already getting a bit stale and next year with 4 competitions and renewed expectations is gonna be super demanding. I fear the cool calm character will look drained and depleted by Christmas, I hope I'm wrong but it's a big seat to sit in and the only manager's I feel have the self belief and sheer audacity to handle it are Enrique and Tuchel. In third I'd probably opt for Emery as his passion and obsession with the game would help. But failing that, I don't see anyone else out there suitable which then means a fairly flat "might as well give it to Carrick" but that's unfortunately more of a default outcome than an exciting one :/

Yeah I appreciate it wasn't possible due to no Europe and early exits in both Cups but ideally needed to see how Carrick would juggle multiple competitions this season

Why not just win the league though? Instead of half arsing it like a little bottom feeder club, building like a good little boy, why not just win it instead? We could cut out all that prep time we've been enjoying for the last 15 years.

Find a coach who knows how to win, buy a few more players, and win it.

Is it guaranteed? Of course not. But why should that change the clubs intent?

If that coach isn't available then sure, let Carrick hang around, and who knows maybe he'll win the league. But surely the chances of us winning the league are higher with someone else...unless we all think Carrick is a world class manager?

Think it's safe to say that coach isn't available at this moment in time, therefore we will have to go with the interim manager which I'm not gonna lie is worrying

Stop being silly. The club obviously does want to win the league, but it’s much easier said than done and our squad is clearly lagging behind Arsenal and City right now.

City have Pep and unlimited funds and they’re not guaranteed to win the league FFS.

And it’s becoming increasingly clear that lots of the top managers aren’t available due to contract renewals and the World Cup. In the absence of options, let alone a guaranteed league winner (which doesn’t exist), sticking with a manager who is currently getting title challenging results isn’t the most out there idea ever, whether you like it or not.

Yeah the international contract renewals and Enrique staying at PSG leave us short of options

Carrick hasn’t shown that he can use a dominant style of play. We’ve been lucky in some games by moments of quality. I’d thank him for the job he’s done but then bring in someone who can take us to the next level with some quality additions.

To play that football we need some upgrades in midfield and in the backline. Carrick is getting the most out of the squad.

Who has won the league? In recent years it has been Pep, Slot, Conte, Ranieri and Klopp. I doubt we are looking at any of those

On what basis? We've not done anything like that since Moyes. Amorim is the only appointment made under this structure and he was given two years with an option for a third.

I suspect a two year with option is what MC (or any regular appointee) will be offered. A superstar manager might demand more but the World Cup reduces the candidate pool. Perhaps the board may interview a few others but if we finish strongly, MC has to be favorite.

Do you think that should be more of a 1+1 deal?

Ugh. I'd rather him here than there.
Well that does mean we can give Carrick a chance, if it doesn't work out then Iraola will still be availble givem how ;ong Chelsea managers last these days

I am praying we give him a sensible contract because hard to ever trust INEOS with managerial decisions after that post FA Cup Final Ten Hag facade

It's not even that I'm sold on Iraola (I mean, he does seem to me the most interesting option, maybe Nagelsmann too), but he promises to be something special and I'd rather not see that happen at Chelsea, while I can't imagine Carrick will be anything special. Stable, but not special.

Has there been any talk of more coaches added to his setup if he gets the job? How big was his coaching team at Boro? He's got what, two guys he brought with him and Binnion.

It is quite amazing how this club manages to repeat the same mistakes for over a decade, from regime to regime.

What are these mistakes?
Poor managers, overpaying for players, not using the scouts and more

Carrick for me has already shown his level. Another counter attacking coach or fall flat. It will not succeed. But it is the easy decision, and we’re a fanbase stuck in the past and nostalgia. That’s why we’re almost irrelevant in modern football.

That’s a curious way to describe a club which is still one of the most popular, most watched, and most talked about.

Yeah it does seem we are going to be watching on whilst he becomes something special at Chelsea
