Enrique would need years to build something like this PSG team here sadly. As brilliant as Casemiro was yesterday and throughout the season and as good as Shaw or Maguire have been at times they benefit from set ups to protect them. It would not translate well.
Well Casemiro is leaving and Maguire and Shaw have one season left anyway.

These are all players we need to replace regardless of who the manager is

Break the bank for Enrique. There's a potential opportunity to do something next season, with questions over pep and the charges, Liverpool seemingly sticking with slot, and arsenal being arsenal.
Never happening but I would give my left noot to have him at United. The best manager in football by a distance and probably the best I’ve seen aside from Fergie. The tactical acumen and cohesion of his teams is just brilliant.

Watching PSG v Bayern, this is the football we have to aspire to, Carrick is not the man to do this. I would like to see Iraola as he plays a high speed pressing game even if he fails it sets astandard for a succesor. Carricks anti football is not for me.
Carrick is the answer for now. We need to build up to that level. Carricks job is to get us to qualify for CL consistently and build the squad.

It may be the manager after him to take the next step up and win CL and PL.

It's not gonna happen overnight or within 12 months

Just to be clear.

You would rather Carrick manages us next season than Luis Enrique?

I know this wasn't a question for me. But...

Unless the Qatar sportswashing money follows Enrique, i'd probably go with Carrick as well.

None of the players in our team have the required level to play this kind of football. Enrique would have to adopt a more Pulis-ish kind of style, and I don't think he has it in him.

I think he'd quite obviously want Enrique, he's being realistic.
That wasn't obvious from his post. In fact the opposite seemed to be which is why I asked.

Someone else just quoted me a minute after you saying that they would prefer Carrick to Enrique. People believe all sorts of things

I'd imagine we have spent very similar, if not more than PSG in the last 5 years and the last 3 years (under Enrique)

Probably, yes. Don't get me wrong.. I'd love to see United play like Enriques Qatar team. Just don't see it happening.

We know what Carrick can do with the current crop of players. The technical level of our players won't magically improve 300% if Enrique arrives. And, the club probably won't have the patience to let him build his own team.

I'd like to be proven wrong though.

But I don't understand you point. He doesn't need to bring any Qatari money. He's spent less than us.

He needs to bring his coaching btilliance and we need to recruit properly.

I don't think he's even an option for us but the idea of taking Carrick over Enrique doesn't make sense.

We missed out not getting Luis Campos whilst he was available, but nothing surprises me anymore with how incompetent we've been ran.

Competence in the past was non existent, but we are definitely better now. I’m always surprised by fans who feel that we were badly run, but when we see green shoots - we are afraid to back it.

As a United fan, the period after Ten Hags first 6 months has been the worst period of my football watching life, and yet - we finally have some degree of competence. It’s because some good decisions were made, and I (for one) was gaslit by Ruben thinking there is light at the end of the tunnel. Now I can see that we made the right choice, and whatever we do in the summer - I’ll back the current set up with it. They have proven that they do deserve some time. Moving us from 15th to 3rd is no mean feat, and we did that with literally 4 signings and barely a serious net spend.

My point is we know that Carrick has done an excellent job so far. We know what he can do with the players available. Will he keep progressing? I have no idea. Don't have enough data to do a proper analysis.

I'm confident Enrique could do a job here if he's backed by the club. But I have no idea how he would do in the Premier League.. And with players that are clearly nowhere near the level of his current squad.

People were whining about Campos buys on the PSG end at the start of last season, if you go back and check their forums (which have been quoted here previously). The club is still suffering from the Glazer debt and then the enabling of Murtough to in turn enable Ten Hag to produce one of the worst spending sprees in living memory (Casemiro - to some degree, even with the money & age - and Eriksen on a free being exceptions). Ugarte was a 'gift to Mendes in order to secure LY and options -in theory - on future guys, but Mendes works for a) himself, and b) PSG in that order before anyone else: the other buys have been reasonable investments, if not always successful.

The club has an independently-verified 'top range' data department and modern recruitment structure. Berrada is highly respected; Wilcox has more experience (at a winning outfit) than Edwards had before starting at Liverpool in the same role. Amorim was a gamble that half the football-intelligentsia and sports analyst-quants with top--class Postgraduate degrees doing side-gigs on Youtube or writing for the specialist papers thought was a good decision: Bayern just went toe to toe with PSG under their 7th choice managerial selection, a guy who got Burnley relegated right before. Ratcliffe can't solve the financial issue further without Glazers agreeing to water down or dispense with their control - unfortunately we're stuck with them for the coming years short of a miracle (financial, through a super-bid, or 'natural' etc) -- which would allow him to inject further cash in.

The reason why some of those decisions look so bad is because of legacy contracts and legacy players; if the previous regime had bequeathed the club a balanced midfield in its prime, a 'calibre' striker + a GK who wasn't Onana, a lot of these issues mysteriously don't exist, INOS still spend money but it goes to meet other problem areas, the team gets better results, and more people think they're good owners/managers. It's more 'luck' + 'legacy' than people want to allow for...

We know Carrick who was recently sacked by Middlesbrough can do it with these players after 13 matches but there are serious doubts over Luis Enrique?

No we’ve had this discussion countless times now. The likes of Enrique, Pep etc are too good at coaching and therefore wouldn’t be as good as Michael Carrick at coaching these players. Or something to that extent. It’s the Olympic level mental gymnastics you find on here.

Hiring experienced managers is risky. It didn't work out with Jose and Louis.

Hiring highly rated foreign managers is risky too. They might be awful like Amorim.

Sticking with an inexperienced ex player is the safest option

I'm preaching I DON'T KNOW.

I'd like Carrick to stay. That's all.
I think you probably should know that a man with 2 trebles and favourite to win yet another CL would be a better choice than a man who was sacked by Middlesbrough recently.

Even if he has got very good results across the 13 matches he has managed as an interim.

I'm not excited by Carrick. But one of the points he has in his favour is if you bring in a progressive manager this summer with the style we want to see, they'll be absolutely shook by the poor technical standard of our players when it comes to ball retention, the lack of legs in midfield, the painfully slow defence. And that's not something they'd be able to fix in one summer. It may actually fall apart for them in their first season as they try to get the team playing a way they're not capable of.

The argument could be that we should keep recruiting well and go with a pragmatic manager for the time being who will play to the team's strength, and get a top coach in further down the line when the squad is something a top coach could actually work with.

Obviously, the chance to get Enrique would be too good to turn down even if the squad isn't ready for him. But he's not available anyway so it's a pointless discussion.

I think you'd be surprised at how much a top class manager would get out of Cunha, Bruno, Mbeumo, Amad, Sesko, Mount, Mainoo, Dorgu. Plus the 2 or 3 midfielders we are going to sign.

There is no football team on the planet that Enrique wouldn't manage better than Carrick. Whether it's the best team in the world or a Sunday league side.

This isn't even so much about Carrick. We are talking about the best football manager on the planet.

Kompany at Bayern is an example of a manager that you wouldn’t think is a big name or an exciting option but with the talent he has he’s produced a brilliant style of play… same one that got Burnley relegated. So the question is… is the manager more important in terms of a big name manager or is it more of the talent he has to work with to produce consistently good football?

Possibly. But there are a lot of players on that list who have questionable ball retention, they're nowhere near the technical standard of Enrique's Barca, Spain and PSG sides.

We'll also have a painfully slow defence playing a risky high pressing, high line approach.

The same style got Burnley promoted first. Manager, style and squad have to fit together. His style fits a top team (like Bayern or Burnley in the Championship) but doesn't work wonders with a massive underdog (Burnley in the PL).

I'm not a fan of your condescending demeanor.

I have my opinions, you have yours.

Have a nice evening.

With right signings Carrick could probably keep decent level of performances next season but if I'm rival fan I'd probably be fine with United keeping Carrick. I'd be more worried if they got Nagelsmann or Enrique.

It's a shame we didn't use International break back in early October 2024 to sack ten Hag and hire Tuchel. Soon after he went to England NT. I was buzzing with us signing Amorim later but it didn't work out unfortunately.

So therefore does that tell you that he doesn’t change tactics/ to stubborn? Which is not what a top manager would do. Top managers change to suit their squad or the league.

I don’t even know why we’re debating this… there’s not a chance Enrique would come here. It’s too good to be true. We can’t really attract the best managers in the world… hence the reason we’re always going for the apparently up and coming ones.

More like Burnley didn't have the necessary squad quality anyway to stay up. It still was the best style for them as they were build for that, just that they didn't have the quality to win enough games.

I think that's true.

There is just a tiny part of me that wonders if he wins the CL that he might just want to go and try something new and challenging.

Utd are still the probably the biggest name in world football, media attention wise. I also think he has a bit of a Vendetta against the idea that he couldn't do it in England based on some of his jibes after knocking English clubs out last year.

He does feel like the sort who would love the idea of coming to Utd after 13 years what we have seen and saying "let me show you how it's done"

It's a lot of silly hope but you never know.

He’s very rigid. No two ways about it. Which is fine if you’re Bayern in the Bundesliga most weeks but naive otherwise.

What would have been less naive in your opinion?
Not leave holes all over the pitch for PSG attackers to run into for a start. It’s the same dynamic as Pep. It works brilliantly when you have a clearly superior side to the opposition but doesn’t come off so hot when the difference is less stark. Look at how Bayern have struggled in the league this season when Kompany opted to rotate the team.

So then the question which begs asking is how good is said manager in that case as it could just be that the superior players are responsible for the team’s success.

Look at Bayern's squad and try to find a formation that has the same player quality (or only slightly less) while covering the holes you perceived today. I can't. Only with a clear loss in quality.

So it's a choice between better players and tactics they are used to, and worse players in a system they are not used to play but might be better in theory to counter what PSG offer.

I'm quite sure the latter is the actual naive approach.

If Musiala were fully fit and had looked himself as yet this season I would agree with that. Not every player in a world class team has to be world class though. Sometimes you just need some grit in there, especially against a midfield like PSG’s.

But all the same it could be as simple as not playing such a high line against such a dangerous team.
