We know Carrick who was recently sacked by Middlesbrough can do it with these players after 13 matches but there are serious doubts over Luis Enrique?

It is so ridiculous some of the logic I keep seeing as to why Carrick can somehow obviously achieve better things with these players than managers with vastly more experience, who have also demonstrated a better style of football at their previous clubs. All of the potential reasons apply even stronger to Carrick, whose only experience is doing a decent job at Boro before being sacked for not quite doing enough.

Many thought the squad were so bad because we had a shite coach in Amorim, but Carrick has shown him up and perhaps a better coach could get this squad performing to a higher level and doing more, not to mention we will obviously be buying reinforcements. LVG had us dominating possession pretty quickly despite people thinking guys like Smalling would be completely incapable.

Why do people think Carrick is doing some incredible job with this squad of players like they're relegation level? He's probably had the second best squad available behind City since he took over (which is why everybody looks crap).

Even when we were playing that abomination of a formation we were only 2 points behind 4th before several of our best players left for the AFCON.

And top managers like Enrique could manage us to play like PSG as that's what he does, we just wouldn't be anywhere near as good at it as PSG are at the moment. He might play this attacking style and finish 5th/4th and as we add more quality and replace his weaker links he then gets 3rd/2nd to eventually 1st. That's exactly what Klopp did when he took over a poor Liverpool team, he didn't come and and play like stoke until he was finally able to buy Mane, Salah and Van Dijk.

He finished 8th (after taking over when they were 10th) then 4th, then 4th with champions league final, then 2nd with champions league win, then 1st. Point being you don't need an average manager to be steady while you try and buy players, you get the best attacking manager you can and let him train/improve the squad while the management gets in the players to keep us progressing.

I’ve kind of accepted that Carrick will be our head coach next season but I hope that he’s given a 2 year contract at most or even a 1 year with us having the option of the second year contract and I hope he’s given a strong coaching team around him that have experience at the highest level.
Yeah that's exactly the kind of deal INEOS need to offer

I'm not surprised there is little noise of Enrique leaving PSG, you only have to look at the players he has at his disposal to see why there is so much noise about contract extension

It’s like a lot of you are hard of hearing.

No doubt Enrique can come in and do things his way. The issue is in doing so with the wrong players you end up finishing 15th instead of 3rd.

Maybe in the Bundesliga or Ligue 1 you can get away with it. Not in this league mate.

Pep tried it and just about qualified for Champions league in his first season.

We cannot afford mistakes.

Bit of a difference to finishing 15th, mind

Said it before and I’ll say it again, I think a new poll with REALISTIC choices should be put up as there’s a load of non starters (Tuchel who I voted for, Luis Enrique and Ancelotti) as well as no chancers (Hoeness, Xavi, Maresca) and not good enough (Silva, Glasner) so let’s whittle it down to the genuinely realistic and all vote again.

I feel that with Champions League pretty much sown up now, I think if they were looking to actually appoint Carrick full-time, an announcement would be imminent after Monday night.

The longer it goes on from point for me, the more unlikely Carrick is going to get it.

I think the INEOS hierarchy won’t make kneejerk decisions like Woodward made on that front. I can’t see Ratcliffe being enthused about Carrick being the full time guy like a lot of other fans too.

If they do appoint Carrick then feck me their operation has got to be impeccable and the squad has to be loaded with talent over the summer. Carrick is the kind of appointment you can afford to make if you’re Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth where every aspect of the club works amazingly almost in spite of who the manager is. A closer example to us would probably be Bayern Munich, where they can afford to appoint Kompany because they’re immaculately run and all he has to do is do the first team coaching.

The problem is that "genuinely realistic" is a bit subjective to start limiting options. We have many times signed players or managers that some person in this forum thought it was unrealistic.

I think they will confirm when CL is officially sewn up

I would be very surprised if anything is announced before the end of the season.

Even if they've decided on Carrick, they won't want to fall into the Ole trap of announcing the permanent appointment end only to then lose games immediately afterwards. And from an optics POV, they will presumably want to present appointing Carrick as the end result of a thorough process.

Plus The Athletic had reported that a decision explicitly would not be made until the end of the season.

Get Luis Enrique. I hope the owners watch the game last night and see the big gap in our tactical play with theirs. I am not certain Carrick will get to that level after watching the games he managed so far.

I don't think his sacking by Middlesbrough has been mentioned enough in this thread. What is the last example we can think of, of a manager sacked by a club at the level of Middlesbrough getting a job at a top football club and actually over-achieving second time around? And I just don't buy the idea that he now has a team in place, with Holland et al, that has covered up a lot of the issues he had at his previous job. I'll just continue to believe he will get found out in this job sooner or later, and the football has hardly been inspiring already.

Jacobs basically said on his weekly TUS twerkfest not a hope he is leaving PSG and will extend deal

I get that people like you want Enrique. But how would you convince him?

We hear you loud and clear which is why we correct you, the point was that you couldn't give someone like Enrique a Champions league team bad enough to finish 15th in any league.

Incase you haven't noticed this league isn't all that at the moment, all we had to do to qualify for the Champions league was buy three good attackers (not even special ones). Id even wager to guess that if Amorim stayed we would have at least finished 5th.

Even your example goes against your point, after looking up this season where "Pep tried it and just about qualified for Champions league in his first season." he actually finished 3rd with 78 points where as the season before he took over, City finished 4th with 66 points so he massively improved them instantly.

I firmly believe there's less of a risk next season if we put an objectively better manager in charge than Carrick than if he were to stay. There is absolutely nothing in these performances that suggest he will be a safe bet for Champions league qualification and keep getting results next season, they actually scream the opposite.

Enrique would need years to build something like this PSG team here sadly. As brilliant as Casemiro was yesterday and throughout the season and as good as Shaw or Maguire have been at times they benefit from set ups to protect them. It would not translate well.
Imo, a realistic situation is Carrick stays here until 2028. Wins us a couple of cups, keeps us qualifying for the Champions League and gets us competitive. All whilst helping Wilcox reshape the squad.

In 2028, have a rethink.

Can Carrick get us to next stage? If no, go all out for Enrique knowing that he'll have a squad that is close to competing at the highest level.
How did Liverpool convince Klopp?
Klopp had "only" been at Dortmund before. That's ultimately very different to a guy who has won trebles in two different countries.

It's 100% going to be Carrick now, but honestly this will end up being another short term thing ending in a sacking within his first full season. Would love to be wrong but I think we're just repeating the same mistakes.

Well we know you don't pretend your club is Disneyland.
I despised that Toy Story puppet for costing us Klopp

My big fear is that like Ole and EtH he does well for a season or two playing a certain way and then says “we need to step up and go toe to toe with the best teams” …and then it all goes horribly wrong. We then get a new coach who comes in and finds it very difficult to get a tune out of players who are habituated to playing a certain way.

what could be different this time is that recruitment will be better with more adaptable players and that we won’t see average/decent players given 5 or 6 years to prove themselves but rather one or two. Hopefully this sets it apart from the Jose, Ole, EtH eras.

Agree and we buy the wrong midfielders in summer as well. This is my feeling.

Not the same scenario at all. Enrique is managing the best team in the world. They could most likely defend their CL trophy and possibly go for a triple CL defence.

That would a legendary achievement. Rarely accomplished.

When he took the job, PSG was widely regarded as a failed project of some ultrarich royals who were pouring money into a bottomless pit. The tenures of both Pochetino and Galtier were lukewarm and uninspired, and they hadn't won a CL knockout tie in two years. They were a club that was eating up managers for fun. He made them the best team in the world because he took on a challenge despite having already won it all at Barcelona. I believe this all sounds familiar.

Klopp had "only" been at Dortmund before. That's ultimately very different to a guy who has won trebles in two different countries.

With Pep married to the City project, he was the hottest managerial property in the world of football. Liverpool were a joke then, but they still managed to convince him.

Well he was unemployed at the time they approached him, for a start.

And Enrique was in talks to see if he'd renew or not. There was a window of opportunity. Not that it matters now, of course.

Well we know you don't pretend your club is Disneyland.

Yup, that was a masterclass. He agreed with the people in charge at Anfield that he would begin building a team around the hard workers/runners (because it is critical to his football) and that they would gradually add pieces to the puzzle by working together. It's about the willingness to work hard with the manager. When he said to Woodward that United would require a lot of work to become "his team", Ed's answer was "we have money, you know". Thankfully, we've moved on from that, but now the consensus seems to be that we're not "ready" to be a "modern" team. Should we put the hours in and try to become one? Nah, just settle with what's in front of us.

It's a very simplistic take to look at PSG and think Enrique did all that. He has the best Director of Football in the world in Luis Campos who is just as integral to the success of PSG as Enrique.

Even if Enrique were available this summer we don't have the players or the foundations for playing his type of football.

That's why if you want to land Enrique or similar you do it via a stepping stone process. Regular qualification for CL. Better players, deeper better squad. Then you bring someone like him to take the club to the next step and win the big trophies.

Can’t see anyone in the club’s hierarchy watching us these last few months and thinking Carrick is the man. We’ve been beyond lucky and are dull and uninspiring to watch. I’d have loved Carrick to have worked out and played some good football, but his appointment is almost guaranteed a sacking next season. The way we play isn’t sustainable.
Ireola or Silva if we want PL experience - both would be better appointments in my eyes.

I think the days of United offering 6 year deals is done. I suspect it’ll be a 2 plus 1 type of deal.

Aren't INEOS supposed to be the best in class? Get him here, agree with him on three major signings and tell him that he has one of the best academies in the world at his disposal. He doesn't have to win the title right away. Klopp, in his first presser at Anfield, told them that Liverpool will be ready to challenge in 5 years. No one bat an eyelid. The "stepping stone" arguments are just copium. We're about to throw 200 million in the market next summer. Get the right man in and work as a team to get the club where it should be.

Giving the job to Carrick is making the same mistake again. The club of the size, prestige and pressure as united need an elite manager.

Who are ‘elite’ managers these days? When there are bluffers like ETH, Amorim, Rosenior, Ruud, Gerrard, etc getting jobs?

Enrique looks like he will sign a new contract with PSG, who can blame him?

Ancelloti staying with Brazil

Klopp not interested in United

Where are these magical elites?

Hehehe Enrique will be on walking stick by that time
