I came here to write this after catching up on all the Real insanity.

His Leverkusen record was unreal, and he was managing a basket case in Madrid quite clearly.

The more shit that comes out about them his stock just keeps going up and up.

Does he only do 3 at the back though? If so I withdraw my statement.
He doesn't. He likes it, but even at Leverkusen, he switched it up if necessary, depending on squad availability and the corresponding opponent

Ok there really is no other manager to interview left if the above bits of news are true.

If Carrick flops, we’re fecked. No plausible options left. Buckle in boys…
Simple, then we hire another manager...

Did Chelsea as a club cease to exist when Lampard failed badly?

Did Barca fall off a cliff after Xavi resigned? Is Real going to implode with Arbeloa failing now?

Only with United is the manager considered the end all and be all regarding the clubs current and future fortunes

Ornstein reporting Alonso to Chelsea as well. I don't know, if he's not holding out for the Liverpool job then this kind of feels like a no brainer decision to me. And sure, as a former Liverpool player he might just never be willing to take the United job, but Chelsea were arguably just as big a rival for Liverpool when Alonso was playing for them.

The problem is, I think people genuinely believe we are on the verge of fully turning things around and we are perhaps one more Summer away from turning into genuine title contenders. We get another "lampard" style appointment, we set things back another 12-18 months.

Much prefer him there than Liverpool tbf.

He wouldn't last a full 2 years at Chelsea like everyone else

Chelsea is a bit of a basket case of a football club but they do have some very good players who coupled with a good manager could just become a threat next season.

I’m surprised Alonso would go to Chelsea. I thought Liverpool would sack Slot and he’d go there.

The manager market for big clubs seems very strange at the moment. Would never have tipped Jose for a Real Madrid return but that seems to be happening.

I'm sure I read somewhere Alonso left Liverpool on bad terms, so I'm surprised so many think he'd automatically take the job just because hes an ex player of theirs.

We need to go for Nagelsmann... I can't stand the idea of the likes of Chelsea being ambitious and going for Alonso whilst we get stuck in the United DNA past that everyone sucks off gladly. It's a joke.

Most of this thread were convinced that he was nailed on for Liverpool the minute he became available

If he's not then we should definitely do some due diligence ourselves ahead of the summer

I honestly believe INEOS have been somewhat blinded by the results since Carrick took over and have bought in to the fanfare there is to hire him. It wouldn't surprise me if we haven't even considered anyone else throughout the whole process.

Benitez basically pushed him out to sign Gareth Barry. Yeah, really
Yeah I read that Alonso wife was due to give birth, Liverpool had a game and alonso asked benitez to not select him just in case. Benitez put him on the bench and didnt bring him on. Thats what I read, probably bollocks but you never know.

I dont think he'd turn down Chelsea if the right conditions were offered.

However while he was managing Leverkusen it was reported that he had an agreement that they would let him leave for the big clubs he played for - Real Madrid, Bayern and Liverpool.

So most likely he is in general open to the idea.

Yeah I think you are spot on, yes journos have reported due diligence on candidates but the lack of links was telling

We surely have to sound Alonso out. He's obviously a fantastic coach, understands big clubs, actually performed pretty well at Real and of course knows how to go a season without losing all but one game.

Yes as soon as we maybe hit a slight poor run of form people would decry why we didn't go with a United legend and went for a Liverpool one instead, but he has already had objectively a better career than Carrick. Also imagine the scouse head loss of us winning trophies with him as our manager.

Yeah not gonna lie this feels like a body blow and fear he will get Chelsea firing again which is annoying

I’ve been saying it for ages. The links in the media to different coaches after bad results, and the narrative that we’re going to undertake a thorough process (where have we heard that before? And still fans buy into it) was always just lip service. We heard the same bollocks after the FA Cup win under ETH, when there was a very long list of top quality coaches available, and they concluded that “Ten Hag is the best coach available”. What really gets my back up is that fans just lap it all up every time. They don’t give a rats arse if there’s a good process as long as they get the coach that they want.

The amount of viable candidates was always few at the offset but even moreso now.

Outside of national team managers, I really don't see any outstanding candidates who would be gettable at the moment

It's a joke in my book. They came in talking about best in class, we now have:

  • CEO who has never held the role before.
  • Sporting director who has never held the role.
  • About the appoint a manager who got sacked by a Championship club in their only full time position.
I have massive respect for players. But he should not be considered for the permanent role, results have over delivered against performances in almost since the beginning. An he simply doesn't have the resume or style of football to be successful here long term.

If given the role, I honestly think it will be tears by January.

I feel this is somewhat of a myth. The club have done a great job in spinning a landscape that no one is available. Kidding fans that its impossible to go and get a manager thats already in post.

I know I an cynical, but I just see it as them being unwilling to pay a release fee following Amorim.

In what world can Carrick be the best candidate for Manchester United.

They can't really afford to get this one wrong either. At some point their whole football operation will otherwise come under much more scrutiny and I'd assume several heads will eventually roll due to that. So far they've gotten some of the most important decisions wrong. Ten Hag, Ashworth, Amorim. It won't need much next season to brutally ramp up the pressure. If we find ourselves stranded in midtable come November/December playing some dreary football, all the questions being asked right now, will come back to haunt them tenfold.

They better hope they're getting this one spot on and deliver the right players during the summer window.

So Alonso not outstanding candidate then, personally I would only put Enrique/Ancelotti above him

I definitely haven't fell for the spin about lack of outstanding candidates and Alonso just proves the point

I never felt the calls for Alonso to United made much sense - he has a short CV of one great season in bundesliga, playing a back 3/5 which we hate, has a Liverpool connection, no PL experience as manager. Was never anywhere near the top of my shortlist.

The reason I'd fancy Chelsea to be pretty good next year is if they have no European games. We've seen how much we benefitted from it this season. You feel at least one of Spurs/Newcastle/Chelsea will get themselves back in the top 5 mix if they all miss out on Europe.
