Cool - a thread about hockey that may stay in the top 30 topics for a day or two.

Tips for the Stanley Cup?

Dallas for me, of course, although the northern yanks in Vancouver and Ottawa are looking interesting outside bets at the minute. Otherwise Detroit or Colorado as is customary it seems.

Ottawa usually blow it in the playoff's--mainly when they play my Leafs. But, their team is amazing this year, and will be tough to beat in the East. In the West, god knows. If the Ave's can get their act together, they will make a run of things, and the Canucks will do great if Naslund and Bertuzzi keeps on scoring. Still, if Detroit maintains its form, they may win the West again.

Vancouver - Ottawa would be a cool final.. although it wouldn't do much for the NHL ratings in the US though

feck ratings, lets just get the best two teams out there. The Senators are, currently, the best team in the East-- and probably the best team in the league. I would like to see the Wild go far, but I can't see it happening this year.

My comments about san jose was based on their current form. Which has been quite good after they changed the coach.

Whilst this is true they are a long way behind and unlikely to make the playoffs imo.

you say they can't make in playoffs? They still have 43 games left and they are 8 points behind edmonton which is at eight place in western conference. So why it's so hard to make in playoffs? For example you say never write united of from title race even if we are more behind leading team than San Jose are behind the play off place.

My Bruins are capable of doing it, they could have won the Eastern Con. last year if not for Dafoe's brilliant ( ) goaltending and McClaren-gate. The way they're going now, it'll be nice to see them in the playoffs at all. :(

My realistic tip for the final: $tars v. Devils.

[unrelated minirant]- Nice to see Hill back in the knee-cracking business. Nothing like seeing someone connect with a knee check and then drop to the ice and cover his head like a fecking turtle when the other player retaliates. "Only a hip check," right. I hope he tries one of those hits and blows his own fecking knee.

Fair enough - it's definitely possible, you're right. I don't think they will make it though, I think the teams ahead of them in the Pacific will beat them out.

The Sens look the best at the moment but as has been mentioned seem to struggle in the playoffs. There are a number of teams in the West who have great rosters (Wings, Stars, Avs, Canucks) and only need to hit a hot streak in the playoffs to make it to the finals.

teams i consider contenders
east
Ottawa - usually blow it dont think things will change
Philadelphia - solid team, quite capable
Boston - my fav, sadly i dont htink they have the goaltending
New Jersey - arent scoring much but arent allowing many either, good mix of players and brodeur can do the job
Toronto - gritty bunch of players, IF belfour can keep it up who knows

west
Detroit - + Yzerman, should win it all.
Colorado - not sure whats going on there but somethings missing
Vancouver - i dont think so, not convinced on goaltending
Dallas - maybe, will be tough to beat but they take too many penalties, then again if refs let them play in playoffs
St Louis - could beat anybody if they get the goaltending but i dont think they can keep it going through 4 playoff rounds.

New Jersey vs Detroit with detroit in 6
