Under the Commons standards committee’s code of conduct procedural protocol, it is clear that if an MP stands down while an inquiry is underway, and is then re-elected, the inquiry can be reactivated.
It says:
If parliament is dissolved or the member otherwise ceases to be a member while an investigation is in progress, the commissioner will suspend their investigation until the member is re-elected. If the member is not returned to parliament, the commissioner will decide if it is appropriate and proportionate to resume their investigation.

Technically the government could refuse to appoint him to an office for profit under the Crown, which would force him to serve out his term, but that would be unprecedented.
It seems like by resigning his parliamentary seat, then standing again at the bye-election he has caused that he is giving the people of Clacton-on-Sea, the opportunity to back him or sack him!

At least it was quite funny seeing how genuinely angry he gets about the rights of politicians to do a little corruption. I think he's even more passionate about that than his racism.

I've seen plenty of reform supporters (and even reform itself) post tweets denigrating how much by-elections cost, so keen to see their complaints about how much this stunt is going to cost the taxpayer.
So he is obviously pretty confident of being elected again, and then he hopes that it will give him a stronger mandate and freedom from these bribery allegations. Is that the play?

Yes but they resume again once he is elected as @Frosty referred to above. He’s trying to delay things but it is going to be that easy to get away with it.
Then it's very strange. But I guess it gives him a chance to campaign and get a lot of media attention around that.

The latest scam to try and pull the wool over eyes of his followers. Feels like he is starting to get a bit more desperate though.
On another note, "Clacton" sounds like it should be a planet in Star Wars or something.
Something like that, he is using the legal aspects (constitutional matters) for protection, and effectively to press the 'reset button'.
This could get quite 'messey' in terms of testing to destruction the synergy that should be present between parliamentary privilege, election rules and the rule of law.
I know I will get hammered for this, but Starmer was right in his softly, softly approach to change... there are lots of holes/weaknesses/ etc.that exist, in a (political and legal) constitution that is based on the rules and laws of precedence; this needs to be dealt with before real 'freedom under the law' (that can benefit the working populace in particular) can be taken forward in the 21st century.
However this will not happen, in my lifetime anyway!!

I assume so and in the likely event he is found to have broken the rules he then claims no one cares anyway and in truth probably a lot reform voters don’t.
It also means the punishment of forcing him to face a by election is removed. Not much point in making him face a by election when he has just done it anyway.
The trouble is I don't trust the people of Clacton to do the right thing. They'll swallow up this fake bravado as a rallying cry against the woke establishment and re-elect him again. Would be hilarious if this spectacularly backfires and he loses but since Brexit I no longer trust this electorate.
