Gaming Nintendo Switch

It's nowhere near the standards you'd expect.

I found it clumsy and obvious. Nothing remotely surprising nor interesting when it comes to exploration. I don't even think I bothered to finish it.

Dread is right, just not in the way it was meant.
Have you played the prince of Persia one? It’s miles better than this.

Yeah, not a patch on SM. I couldn't be arsed to finish it either, whereas I must've completed SM 7 or 8 times. It was more fun, more atmospheric and exploration was million times more enjoyable. I hope they don't make another one. Or worse remake Super Metroid.

Just finished Layers of Fear. It was genuinely scary... I nearly shat my pants a few times!

Can someone recommend me some good horror games on the switch?

I've already done:

Layers of Fear
Limbo
Inside
Outlast 1&2
Little Nightmares
Darkwood (currently playing).

Thanks in advance.

I didn't play it on the Switch but the Amnesia collection is available on it. If you haven't played the first Amnesia yet, definitely try that one.

Alien Isolation is on the switch. Not sure what the port is like but I played it on PS4 a few years ago and it’s a great game and genuinely scary.

Yeah I read the switch port is better. My only hesitation is the length of the game. But I might grab it when it's on sale next.

I can highly recommend Pizza Tower to anyone who hasn’t played it yet since PC release. Runs very smoothly and is amazing fun, a heir to Wario Land (now that’s a franchise I wish they brought back! Even 4 as a NSO game would be brilliant). Quite difficult at times but not to an annoying extent.

Funny you mention that, my mate at work was recommending it to me today. Will add to wishlist.

Definitely do. I bought it at full price as I liked Wario Land a lot and have been longing for a similar game, but it will probably be on sale within the next 3-4 months.

I have so many of these top indies to still go through, having bought them on sales over the years… Cocoon, Undertale or Dave the Diver goes next.

It's Zelda day today! I wasn't sure at first but the reviews look good so gonna give it a shot, just need to find time to play it...

I've heard mixed things so far, but I pre-ordered and it'll be here in a few hours, hopefully.

Not being able to whack enemies with a sword or arrows will probably take some getting used to.

I already have it downloaded as I pre-ordered but want to finish Thousand Year Door before I get down to it. Looks brilliant though.

It's sitting on 86/100 on metacritic and looking at reviews it's been widely praised for its creativity and gameplay so expecting good things.

Nintendo are so good at their first party games though that 86/100 doesn't really stick out as amazing indeed, the bar is so high it almost feels underwhelming to not see it above 90.

I hope Mario & Luigi can hit the same mark later this year, or maybe even better it.

People are saying it has the same performance issues that a link to the past remake has
Strange that a Nintendo first party that isn't exactly intense graphically can struggle to hit 30fps

Do you mean the Link's Awakening remake? I played that through without noticing any issues.

The frame rate stuttering is starting to bother me now.

Are you playing handheld or on TV? Weirdly I havent noticed framerate issues on my OLED Switch playing handheld, whereas for Links Awakening I definitely did

Only played it briefly on Thursday but yeah definate stuttering when changing from one screen to another. Not as bad as Links Awakening though

havent tried it handheld yet

I'm getting even more interested in hearing about Nintendo Switch 2 plans now.

A lot of developers, and particularly Nintendo themselves, have got a hell of a lot out of the Switch. I'd argue even if the people who are more critical of its capabilities looked back across the library they'd probably feel similar about how good some games still look and run. But it's quite clear and has been for a bit that even Nintendo are starting to have difficulties getting the games to hit the expected level. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door having to drop to 30fps, and the framerate issues with the last couple of more traditional Zelda games have become a bit more irksome.

I'm making an assumption that Nintendo have put smaller teams on these games with a significant amount of their staff power now being deployed into making exclusive Switch 2 games. Many a reason for this, largely it's just the right thing to do. But I think the lack of big exclusive titles for PS5/Xbox Series for their first few years was an eye-opener for Nintendo that they need to have some games like this to have any chance of a launch year that can get anywhere near the success of the first Switch. I also think there is an expectation that anyone who is wanting to alleviate the performance issues with any Switch games at this point will just be told in a roundabout way to buy a Switch 2 next year.

It'll be interesting if some games don't necessarily need big updates to tap into the increased capabilities of Switch 2, as we've seen with some games on other systems that can just tap into the raw power difference and the game runs how we might have expected to on the previous hardware. However, if updates are needed I think it will simply be a case of the teams that made these games having a skeleton staff that stay on that project a few months longer to create that update.

Nintendo has a surplus of games that sold well over a million copies and I do think the vast majority of them will have increased performance to some degree on the Switch. Some games may even go to the point of being repackaged as Switch 2 games such as Breath of the Wild.

Is Axiom Verge a good game? It's on sale at the switch store but I'm one of those people that needs to finish a game before moving onto the next and don't want to buy a game that I'll struggle to enjoy.

I looked at an ign review and it feels like a metroidvania but you get lost a lot because the map is shit. That seems like a red flag but there gameplay looks awesome.

I genuinely can't wrap my head around the praise for Axiom Verge. I thought it was bland.
