No european football may end up being our saving grace

It's financially appalling for this club.

We have spent millions assembling a shockingly poor squad of not good enoughs, has beens and injury prone huddys . We are probably going to have to pay to get rid of another clueless manager.

We need to sell players few clubs will want in order to bring in reinforcements.

The club is groaning under the weight of the debt the parasitic Glazers have foisted upon us. Scruffy Jim and his gang have - and it's scarcely credible - contrived to make things even worse.

Tonight is the worst I've felt about United since 1974 and relegation.

without Europe we probably can get away with having a much smaller squad. playing once per week and heavily rotating for the cups will mean we probably can get rid of a fair few players and no necessarily have to replace them. From a fan perspective its a disaster to have zero European games, Europa league wasn't exactly exciting but it gave us relief after poor moments in the league,

60+ only if we would go deep in the competition right? And really, what are the odds? I heard, it is more about 30 that are relatively safe but who knows how much of that would be reinvested into the squad and a part of it would be eaten away by players wages increasing to CL levels. No doubt, less money certainly isn't better than having more of it. But we would have had to be smart anyways - even with CL money. Shopping from the topshelf should be put on a break for a while. This will hurt a few fan egos, but it seems to be the only way to go forward. We have multiple gaps, we can't just bring in 3 players and then expect us to be much better next season.
Going deep is 120M or more….

Leipzig made 58M going out in the league stage. While City and Juventus made respectively 76M and 67M for reaching the KO phase, making top 24… (This is about double our earning from the EL this year…)

Even if what you say is true, we'll be years behind in our rebuilding without that CL pull and that's the main problem.

While I hate having to lower standards further, we're obviously not gonna learn to run before we walk like you said. My hope is for us is to bin Amorim and get someone like Frank and Iraola, someone who's PL proven, who can at the very least steady the ship before it all goes crashing down and we head for relegation.

I’m living in SE Asia now, it’s 6am here so at least I’ll have a more consistent sleeping pattern next year

Gutted to lose the final, disappointed in the game itself and the first time I’ve felt really frustrated by Amorim as well as the players. Why leave subs so late, yes we’d have fresh legs and cards to play in extra time but we had to get to it first. Annoyed to lose to Spuds

But I’m happy that we can focus on the league now. Financially it actually won’t make much difference, yes CL brings more money but it would also mean inflated wages for every player and a larger squad. Trimmed squad on lower wages saves a significant amount.

I think this does help the rebuild, papering over the cracks is pointless. This gives an opportunity to focus and start with a new foundation and focus.

This reeks of desperation. Beyond the cup, I don't see what's good about losing out on 60m+ and the pull of potential players who could've helped get us back to the top.

£60m is signing Cunha. Too much is being made of the prize money imo. Sell one of Mainoo and Garnacho and that’s £50-60m.

Yeah we have less games per week to watch until Grim Jim and Amorim take us to the championship. What a time to be alive

People don't want to sell our best young players though if we can help it.

Certainly not if Amorim is the one pushing to sell them because of his system that isn't working.

We wouldn’t have done anything in the Champions League. Missing out on it is whatever.

The big problem was missing out on a trophy.

New ownership group has been like a company takeover where they come in and just strip down the assets and in a couple years time they go bankrupt.

Let’s face it, we don’t deserve to be in the CL and have no business being in it. I’m gutted for the lack of funds and ability to attract players, but playing next season with a pure focus on the PL may not be the worst.
We fully deserve to only have League as focus next season

No European football will mean an opportunity to trim the squad down a bit, or a lot. Assuming we are persisting with Amorim, we can rebuild and focus on a core XI with only one game per week.
Yep. It also means you we won't need as many incomings. We could realistically trim down to 18 players and rotate within.

Unless we have prime v.Persie and Rooney up
top, then yes we can certainly challenge for the league without European football. But no, it’s going to be Liam fecking Delap and Cunha

I don't think a lack of euro football is a bad thing. We need to get back to basics and make things work on the pitch.

It's like a civilian joining the army, the club needs stripping down to the basics and being rebuild again. Which will take years.

Only if we take the lesson and make the drastic changes required. (i.e. huge clearout including Bruno, Maguire, Shaw, Casemiro, etc). But knowing us, we will delude ourselves into thinking this was a blip and carry on as if everything is normal, which would set us up for an even worse season next season.

Our players don't deserve champions league football.

Something that tempers the gutting feeling after losing last night was much of our squad would have had a wage rise off the back of it.

Every time you feel disappointed, remember as much.

We'd be a great save in Football Manager now.

Oh yeah, that franchise is dead too.

With this set of players and this clown of a manager, it'd be next to impossible to drastically improve and without CL football and money, good luck on seriously improving the squad.

Do you really want to sell players the next manager would more than likely use

Next gaffa comes in and probably wants 433 or something similar. Now we need players like Garnacho and mainoo

Not having European football is never a good thing and not something to be celebrated.

In our current state, we don’t deserve to be in CL and would likely be out fairly quickly anyway as we’re not good enough.

The only slight positive is that there are no more excuses for implementing the system. 1 game a week = loads more time on the training pitch. If we stick with Amorim, then this system needs to be visible and functioning from game 1 next season. He’s been brought in to play his style and so far it’s not worked. This has to change or he’s out the door by Xmas.

We need to gut the squad a bit, and replacements need to be of the calibre to propel us up the table. We need to shift a large number of these players, regardless of the coach next season, so hopefully we can decisive and start fresh next season.

This is not a money issue. This is a mindset and way of playing issue. We have not played the right way in more than 13 years. We are amongst the least progressive teams tactically not just in England but in Europe. Because we keep hiring managers based on their names rather than based on what they have to offer on the pitch. I cannot remember the last time we were genuinely dominant and good to watch. Probably 2009?

What we need more than anything is a proper, modern, progressive football manager. Not more and more expensive overpaid players.

If we get back to playing football the right way, we'll get back in Europe.

No European football being a saving grace? It's an absolute catastrophe not having it, it's nowhere near a saving grace.

Those saying 'at least we'll have full weeks of training', we've had those this season and still come up with horrific performances after, nothings going to change under this manager and we'll be scrambling round to find a new manager coming October/November.

I don't disagree with your general PoV but money is an issue because getting a new manager will require this one to be sacked, it will require new players.
Investing smarlty is what separates the best from the worst

The club apparently prepped two lists of signings,, one with European football and one without.

I will give him pre-season and at least first 10-12 games personally. If it's anything like this season he will be gone at that point.

Preseason results are useless IMHO unless you mean in terms of training ? I'm physically and emotionally sick of 3 at the back. I really can't stand this anymore

I don't like 3 at the back either. It's too defensive. If we had a CB who could step out and play in midfield as well that would help i.e. like Carrick, mascherano, basquetes did for their teams. Also his formation needs two out and out wingers in the wide positions who care little for defending. We don't have those players,.well garnacho refused to play LWB apparently

I meant having a full preseason to work with the players and drill them. There are a few managers who insist that they won't take a new role mid season. Conte being an example. He always wants a full preseason.

Now you could say Amorim has been here since last oct (I think) and has had plenty of time to figure this out.

Losing a final is terrible but you get over it in few weeks, a month or two or whatever. Financially it's a huge defeat though and we'll have to get through it somehow.

A civilian on the field wouldn't even look as clueless as our professional players yesterday, though.

One small good part is that we can easily let go of all the dross without concerns about squad depth. It enables the possibility of a proper clear out. We’ve got Evans, Eriksen, and Lindelöf contracts expiring. Adios. We can probably then still try to sell three or four more players with no future here like Malacia, Højlund, Antony, Sancho, Rashford, Casemiro, etc.
Then the squad depth can be built on top, when we hopefully get back in Europe some day.

It’s a monumental transfer window to get right.
