No european football may end up being our saving grace

Yep. Better than the treble season

Ah I’m the most optimistic fan you’ll ever meet, brainlessly optimistic at times but even I’m struggling to be hopeful for the future of our club. Let’s wait and see.

One small good part is that we can easily let go of all the dross without concerns about squad depth. It enables the possibility of a proper clear out. We’ve got Evans, Eriksen, and Lindelöf contracts expiring. Adios. We can probably then still try to sell three or four more players with no future here like Malacia, Højlund, Antony, Sancho, Rashford, Casemiro, etc.
Then the squad depth can be built on top, when we hopefully get back in Europe some day.

It’s a monumental transfer window to get right.
Now that the dust has settled, got to try and find anything that remotely can be turned into a positive…..

Offloading players…..it should be easier to move some players on now that ‘they’ won’t have CL football next season.

Certain players will also now agitate for a move. Garnacho being the most obvious. Cannot see him around next season so hit to rinse that fee as best as possible.

We need to be really on it for player sales. Now more than ever do we need to generate our kitty through sales. Really hope that we’ve already done plenty of background work on this. I’m sure we have.

Players that come will now be fully aware of what state we are in and where we are. Hopefully hungry players to help us get back. Let’s forget the big time players that only want CL football or a huge salary.

We will be shopping in a different market that may well have to be stepping stone players but that’s where we are.

Focusing on just the league this season has certainly helped Newcastle and all teams in the CL have had issues dealing with the demands this season. There can be no excuses that there isn’t enough time to train.

We would clearly not have been ready for the CL next season - the money is a huge loss though.

This will be the biggest squad reshuffle we’ve had for as long as I can remember.

Have we got the right management in place to make this work…..that’s the big question.

Going deep is 120M or more….

Leipzig made 58M going out in the league stage. While City and Juventus made respectively 76M and 67M for reaching the KO phase, making top 24… (This is about double our earning from the EL this year…)

And that's not counting matchday gate receipts, that's another 20m £ . Missing out on CL is a loss of at least 80m£.

How many times have we heard on here we need a complete reset!
This is the season to do it, get shot of all the dead wood imo that's over 11 players, bring in at least 4 quality players promote some youth there's some good ones, main buys are strikers. And who knows may even bring in more than 4 .. squad depth can be smaller next season ..

Champion league or Europa games are a distraction for United now. Most teams doesn't have 2 set of players to play EPL and Europe games except City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. Our team doesn't even have a good enough XI, we have probably 4-5 good players. Having EPL and domestic cup games allow us to fully concentrate of the league. If Amorim gets it right, we may end up with top 4 and get back to champion league. No matter what, we aren't competing for multiple trophies based on the players we have. It will take 3-4 years to rebuilt this side capacity for challenging on all fronts. I really hope we have a successful transfer window with 3-4 talented players with a few of loan with option to buy deals. There could be players that are surplus to requirements at their current club that we could leverage short term. I am hopeful Amorim get it right next season, the first 3-4 games we should be able to see if we have improved.

And thank feck for that. Imagine the last few months without the EL results.

What do we save on player wages, don't they take something like a 25% cut?

We were only beating non English team. Once we meet Spurs, we were likely to lose even their squad is missing key players. This is the worst team since I becomes United fan 40 years ago. I have never a team that cannot even motivate themselves to overcome their opponent. The players needs to be self motivated to achieve greatness. Apparently, United has these players.

We here it every season and even if we have had rebuilding years, we have never ever properly reset. We have some expensive contracts coming off the books, a few more players which are moveable. This is the exact season to do a total overhaul like Rangnick said this squad needed.

Cant even go to the pub mid week to watch the game, It really sucks dick as a fan
Yeah midweek games I love, often at the weekend with kids some shit is happening and you can't enjoy it/focus always. Midweek I can work 'late' and go down the pub or just watch in the office.

I'll be blunt....been a season ticket holder and travelled all over Europe with United for more than 15 years.

Gave up my season ticket start of this year. Kind of a result really.

Anyway, I feel I want worse for United! Hear me out, its the only reason Glazers and Ratcliffe will be gone. They will be forced to sell.

I could go on about why I gave up my season ticket, thoughts on a new stadium etc. Let's just hope everything crashes. We will always rebuild. Having a large fan base gararantees this.

Agree, and imo it's going to happen. I've been mulling it over in my head since Thurdsay and there is a lot that will go and some that we don't expect .. Rashford , Sancho, Malacia, Antony, sort those out quick be ideal .

Some will agree some won't. 74 we went down and came back up finished 2nd I think, and fa cup final.in 76 and 77.. reset with loads of new players .. I want them out as well big time but these Yanks will not sell .

Anyone notice that the media no longer appear outraged that a Europa winner has entered the Champions League competition. Strange.

OP gained a whole new meaning after the CL final

Imagine if we had to play that PSG team in the supercup

Constantly being in this CL / EL on-off cycle has probably resulted in the massively bloated squad we have.

Trimming down to a core squad for Amorim to build something can be a silver lining from this.

Look, I was utterly devastated after the Spurs game. I’m sure we all were, but could there be silver lining?

The chances are we would have failed miserably in the CL. We would likely have been out of it before long and have to endure pointless treks around Europe getting our arses spanked, further eroding morale.

We can now concentrate on building a decent team that functions. We can move in the right direction with a trimmed down squad, and without the extra workload. We should be less likely to pick up injuries and suffer from fatigue.

If we add the lad from Brentford and a top striker and keeper, we might shock some people next season. We have good players. Amad, Heaven and Heaven are the future. We have senior players that can and should do better.

The reset button is being pressed here. I know City, Liverpool and Chelsea are bringing in the best and for now we have to watch on as they hoover up the best talent, but we’ve just got to concentrate on what we’re doing.

I think we’ll score more goals and concede less if we have the right guys up top and in goal. If they were in place last season, we’d have a trophy and maybe a CL spot. We’re so far from winning the PL, but to get back to challenging, this had to happen.

It’s not going to be an easy ride, but let’s enjoy the ride. Last season we hit rock bottom. It was truly awful, but the good times will return. We’ll be fun to watch again and I’m feeling quite positive.

Its important to look for the silver lining every dark cloud brings. Qualifying for the champions league would have generated a few extra million pounds, but that is all. we wouldnt have made any impact in the competition.

At least only having domestic football, we can trim the squad a bit. Concentrate on the system and fitness and we should be aiming to be around the top 6 next season.

Personally i am hoping to pick up more points against the lesser teams in the league that we have struggled against in recent years.... Brentford, Wolves etc. I actually think we have performed well against the big teams and but for some misfortune, we'd have took more points against them last season, I'm thinking Maguires miss at Anfield and so on.

I am more positive about the season ahead without champions league football than i would be if we had qualified.

I agree. A trophy would have been lovely, but it would have just led us to continue down the same path leading us nowhere. We almost needed a season like the last one to wake everyone up. I think we’ll be okay.

I think so too. We need a season where we just reset, which means no Europe, 1 game a week, concentrate on getting your best 7/8 players playing weekly.

In the last few years, we had too make games, we could not build momentum because every 5/6 games we had injuries and fitness issues.

The manager has whole pre season if we start well, all season to get this team playing good football.

If by having a season out of Europe allows us to hit the factory reset button and truly refresh the squad and our style and playing strategy then I'm fine with it.

It'll also remove some of the media focus off us this season too as we won't be the topic of discussion midweek.

It can certainly be a positive if done correctly.

Just got to let it happen and not worry. I was hopeful at the start of last season and it very rapidly went down the toilet. Amorim still hasn’t proven himself in the PL, and he’ll need more than just Cunha and Mbuemo to make it work.

I’m cautiously optimistic of our direction now. Hopefully we can get the Mbuemo deal wrapped up sooner rather than later, him and Cunha alone are a huge upgrade to our attack and will go straight in to our starting XI. INEOS seems efficient in the transfer market and we’re far from done.

This post is pretty delusional, sorry. CL is important, because of the money and the reputation of a club. Whatever anyone says, for a quality, motivated, competitive footballer is actually really important to play in the CL. So not being there reduces our chances to sign some players. As simple as that. For instance, why would Gyökeres choose us if he could sign to Liverpool, Arsenal for instance? These clubs can offer everything we cannot, including CL.

I’m allowing myself to be cautiously optimistic. With caution!!!

It's important because of the money but thats about it. The benefits of only playing once a week far outweigh the down side of a player rejecting us based on no CL. Im not sure we want to be signing players who look at that alone when deciding who to join anyway.

Look at the likes of Newcastle and Villa who had their domestic campaigns go really well. qualify for the CL and then struggle to manage the step up in games and had worse domestic campaigns the following season as a result. Hopefully we get the benefit of that in reverse. I also think its correct to point out that given we seem to need a huge rebuild, being able to run with a smaller squad for next season due to less games could be beneficial in the long run.

Of course its making the best of a bad situation and trying to put an optimistic spin on things but we are where we are so may as well look at the positives, hopefully this time next year we can look back on this as the start of the recovery. Can't help feeling Im saying this every summer though!!

People always say this, but Sanchez aside, when he first joined Arsenal over us, there aren't loads of examples of being out of the champions league for maybe a season, being a game changer.

Joining Manchester United is huge for any player. CL is just a cherry on the top. Their image rights and profile instantly skyrocket. The prestige of the club is enormous. There is every chance they could be back in the CL next season, at which time their opportunity to join may have passed.

Delusional seems hyperbolic, it's a perfectly reasonable post,. The prestige of playing for United is huge, and there are many other factors that are considered by players when deciding what club to join, with any "quality, motivated, competitive footballer" also considering the longer term vision of the manager and club, not only wether or not they will play European football in their first season. Far from "simple" as you are suggesting.

Additionally, the only thing these clubs can offer that we can't is CL football.

No Europe isn't great, but we were absolutely rancid in the league last year. Indescribably bad. We all thought 8th was an absolute disaster the year before, then we just about inched up to 15th in the end this time.

Cunha and Mbeumo is a great start. Hopefully we can perform some magic to ship off the 4 wingers we've all spoken about enough, allowing us to bring another 2-3 hungry 24-26 year olds in that give us a better collective good.

Then it's just a mere case of can we actually get them playing to peak!
But either way, it surely can't be as powder puff a forward line as we had last year. The worst in 30-35 years

Would the fact that we didn't get Europe keep the prices reasonable when buying this summer? INEOS have tightened the ship as well though, so it could be that.

There is a better chance that they sell up when we are successfull and doing well economically.

Well, apparently Delap chose Chelsea because of CL. And more. He said he signed for Chelsea because he wants to win trophies. And, if you aren't in CL you have zero chance...

You know if Glazers and Ratcliffe are gone, the most likely one being able to afford us can only be the Arabs overlords right? And the CAF was in meltdown regarding that possibility already.
