Other than his red card in the last game six months ago he has been mr reliable, I'm glad he's staying.

Probably inevitable we would extend. Funds are limited and priority spend will surely be on midfield/FB this summer so can't afford a new CB or lose Maguire.
It's a shame Martinez is as fragile as a Christmas ornament and de Ligt's injury appears to confound the medical staff.

It's a good logical decision.
Good idea to extend, we need some reliability, and even if Yoro steps up big time or De Ligt is fit, we will need someone who can step up when needed and perform.
No issues with him extending for a year. He doesn't have to play every game, would lift the centre back department with a more compact schedule, and we can place a greater focus on other parts of the pitch this summer. More concerned with De Ligt and Martinez's health than Maguire's performances.
He's earned an extra year over the course of this season. Gives the younger players a little more time to develop, and time for us to put resources into areas that need it.
Well deserved. He's been very good these last 18 months. Will need his experience going forward, and hopefully, he can teach a few things to Heaven and Yoro

We have two REALLY young CB’s already, and De Ligt at only 26. Last thing we need is another young CB.
With midfield being the main focus this summer, and other positions like LW and LB also potentially on the agenda, it makes sense. Obviously we'd ideally improve our CB options, but you can't fix everything at once.
And between Maguire, De Ligt, Martinez, Yoro & Heaven we probably have enough to get by for another season, even if it's hard to see us sustaining an effective season-long first choice CB partnership from that group.

Great news! He's really impressed me with his attitude to become such an important part of the team after all the criticism thrown at him. Well deserved, looking forward to many more corners of slab head getting his head on the ball.

We are losing the experience of Casemiro this summer. We need experienced players. Just look at Chelsea for an example of a squad without experienced pros.
We have one CB who has missed more than half the games for us in Martinez, in De Ligt a player who we have no idea when he will be back, and in Maguire a player who is picking up more injuries.
I would bet we are actively looking at a new CB. Clearly midfield is a priority, but this contract is just a sticking plaster - a necessary one because of the other two that we can’t get out on the football field.
Robbie fair he didn’t say we needed a young CB. We should be looking for another centre half, but not one that’s needs developing. We have two good prospects, and you are right - we don’t need another one.
But we do need someone who can actually stay fit.
