Official: Harry Maguire signs a new deal

Happy with the decision to extend his contract. This summer, I don’t think we want to be thin going about centre backs so being able to call upon him for another year in the mean time is helpful. Besides, he’s done very well since coming in for De Ligt.

Happy for him and no doubt that he's deserving of it. Will be really fondly remembered by United fans in the future. Handled himself exceptionally well.

Happy with this, means CB is not a big priority this summer.

Maguire
DeLigt
Yoro
Martinez
Heaven

Assuming they maintain fitness is a decent set of CB options, perhaps with shaw too being able to slot in in an emergency

Harry, at last a United CB striding forward purposely over the half way line with the ball at his feet and his head up, looking for the pass... something we haven't see regularly occur since Rio departed... worth the 1 year ext alone.
Plus the threat he is becoming at corners, a powerful force adding to the general melee that is now the norm for most corners.
I would say worth every penny.

Well deserved, and works with the restrictions I think we'll have on too many big money transfers all at once.

Happy to say I was proven wrong because I was certainly a Maguire Out guy, but the way he put his head down, no drama, got on with it, and has become someone I like to see in the back line, has been really impressive.

I'm just a little concerned about the injury records of de Ligt and Martinez now, I'm not sure about either one getting an extended run next season if that continues, and then we're in the mud for two big replacements.

Have no problem with this. He's been mostly solid this season and CB is priority 3 position in the summer with CDM/CM and backup Striker a more urgent issue. Some sources have his new contract at 2 million less a year than his previous so that's a chunk off the wage bill too

Sensible move I'd say. It's a risk but it will let us know with certainty going into 27/28 if our CBs are good enough. MDL and Licha can prove if they are reliable with fitness and Yoro should have many minutes to show if he's ready to make the necessary leap to a starter.

Maguire's ability in the air alone is enough of a reason to keep him. Him and Casemiro give us aerial dominance and we'd screwed if both left.

This could mean upcoming summer is all about midfield, and fullbacks.

I expect Heaven to play more next season, anyway.

Great news. He is still our best and most reliable CB and in this era of set piece dominance there's nobody better than him in the PL to have.

Makes sense, he's been excellent for a while now and he's always had the pace/mobility of a 33 year old so his drop off could be slower than for other players

That's good squad management on a 1+1. MDL is the natural replacement in the squad but his injuries feel a little bit worse than just bad luck. One more season lets us see if he can overcome them. If he can, we're not tied into a long term deal on Magure, and MDL can take that spot. If not, we get up two summers to find a replacement for both of them.

Good deal and allows the club to mainly focus on the midfield this summer. Would’ve been a huge hole to fill if Maguire was allowed to leave on a free.

This is good news and very well deserved. Proved himself to be a true professional since being stipped of the captaincy.

At 33 years old a 1+1 makes perfect sense too.

Well deserved, definitely earned that and has been a great professional in recent years. Should be in the world cup squad too for me, as good as any other England CB about imo

Good deal. Delighted for him turning it around at the club after some rough years.

Completely makes sense with the CB situation.

I've always felt it's been difficult to play front foot football with him in the side so I've been quite critical of him over the years, but when you need a backs to the wall defensive performance you can't ask for any better. His attitude has also been top class throughout.

  • Never moans if he doesnt play
  • wages likely way lower
  • almost always delivers/ dependable (bad games aside which everyone has here and there)
  • can come up with an offensive action chasing the goal
  • is usually rock solid when we need to defend the lead
  • we can safe money keeping him in the squad for another year

I think the combo of Lisandro Martinez, HM, one year older Yoro, more involved Heaven, Shaw will be enough

we can then invest into a top LB like Lewis Hall

I still often think about the shite posted about him in his 2022-23 performances thread when he was going through a rough patch.

That Greek arrest thing probably got to his head and/or Lindelof pairing was just wrong. Sometimes these off field issues can be very distracting to the player but overlooked by the fans.
