I have a feeling we'll lose to Switzerland but beat Denmark at home with a heroic performance.
We're almost certainly going to get a play off place anyway because of the results in the Nations League (I know that's weird because ours were terrible) and in the qualifying, if we end up third currently we would play Wales for the chance to play Bosnia or Northern Ireland in a final play off game. However our actual opponents (if we need a play off) would obviously change depending on results in the last couple of rounds of fixtures. We're the third best team in the group. If we finish third it would be completely normal. Obviously would be great if we had beat Georgia today but they were better than us on the day and they got a result against Denmark as well.
Is a playoff for third possible?
I agree. It's not an easy place to go and win. But when your obvious intention is to get a draw, it makes winning less likely !McCarthy doing what McCarthy does. Bore opponents to sleep and then try to nick it in the last 10 minutes, assuming the tactic hasn't backfired and you're already 3-0 down.
It's not an easy place to go and win though, especially when you're not blessed with the most talented pool of players. But I think the closing stages show Ireland could and should have been bolder for longer.
Its the usual from Ireland. Completely toothless against half decent opposition unless we go a goal down.I agree. It's not an easy place to go and win. But when your obvious intention is to get a draw, it makes winning less likely !
We have 6 goals from 6 games after playing Gibraltar and Georgia twice. Conceivably we will end up with less goals than games. What's fair is to actually play for a win instead of going out to draw 0.0 every game

He'd have been with the under 21s if O'Neill was still in chargeCannot understand why Connolly wasn't introduced much earlier. He could have won the game for us. But then it's mCarthy's way.
The Swiss really don't look like scoring that many.Gonna lose 3 or 4 nil tonight given the gulf between the teams so far.
They don't have to though, Ireland are just so off it tonight its weird. At the back they look very unfocused which is one thing you rarely see.The Swiss really don't look like scoring that many.
On another note that Lichsteiner's a prick
Are we? Looks the same shite as usual to me.They don't have to though, Ireland are just so off it tonight its weird. At the back they look very unfocused which is one thing you rarely see.
Going forward same shite, defence looks leakier to me. Swiss look like the only thing keeping them out is their own inability with the ball. Are we? Looks the same shite as usual to me.
The three at the back definitely wasn't working. They look a bit better now.Going forward same shite, defence looks leakier to me. Swiss look like the only thing keeping them out is their own inability with the ball.
Yeah, certainly a bit better with the 4. No hope going foward, zero creativity in the middle, hoping for a set piece or long ball for Connoly. The three at the back definitely wasn't working. They look a bit better now.
The aimless long balls are feckin tedious.
You know it's an exciting performance from Ireland when this is in a match thread.Does anyone know what that small marked area to the left of the technical area is on the side of the pitch?

No idea, btw.
And out now for the last match. So Embolo can kick Coleman when he's down but Duffy can't challenge for the ball? We seriously need to start acting like pansies like the rest of the teams.
