Ollie Watkins

We signed Van Persie at 29, Sheringham at 31, Larsson at 33/34 and we made a serious play to sign Di Canio when he was in his 30s too. There’s a time and place for an instant hit.

I’d rather spend £50m on Watkins than the figures being quoted for Šeško. The issue with Watkins is fee; if it’s getting into the £60m realms, then it’s too much.

I wouldn’t have any issue with going for Wissa, but can’t imagine Brentford will want to sell or either club deal with each other again.

Issue for me is those cases you named didn't rely on speed whereas I think a lot of Watkins game relies on that run beyond the last man and that is something that goes downhill at this age.

All were better and in RVP 5 times the player

I believe if Sesko was first choice we would have bid for him already, were holding out for Watkins!

We were a well oiled attacking machine back then and/or getting an experienced striker helped the likes of Rooney, Saha etc. In RVP's case, he was literally bought for one year to give SAF that last title.

You can't look at this current Utd side and say we can afford to sign a 29 year old on high wages to become the main man for the next 3-4 years. It's just not feasible and we've been through this path so many times in the last 10 years.

I Hope not that signing has disaster written all over it , big money signing on big wages approaching decline what could go wrong .

Every striker this summer apart from Delap was a risk. Watkins due to his age. Sesko and Ekitike far too expensive. I wasn’t convinced by Gyokeres and whether he has the ability to do it in the premier league.

Delap was the only one who wasn’t a risk because of his cheap release clause, so was worth a punt.

I think Watkins with decent service from our 10’s and BF would be a great option for a price that would leave enough cash in the bank for something else. Buys us a year or two to find another replacement striker without having to risk it on Sesko.

I think Sesko has the potential to be great, but I think there’s sufficient risk and doubt in the forum that it’s not a lock in.

I don’t think there’s too much risk that there won’t be another Sesko-like player in the next 2 years that we could target in a much strong position than we are now.

I think regardless of how good Sesko might end up being for us, he’s not going to give us 15+ goals in the first season (in my opinion).

As much as I would love Sesko here and I’m happy we’re in for him, there’s something about Watkins that I think this team needs.

I would be happily surprised if we were to go in for him alongside Sesko. A transfer muppet can dream

Aston Villa appear to have beaten Crystal Palace to a deal for the Nice forward Evann Guessand.

Villa have offered about £30million including add-ons for the 24-year-old, who scored 13 goals and claimed ten assists for the French club across all competitions last season.

Most likely competition for Watkins, but opens the door slightly for him to be sold.

We are about to sign Sesko , Watkins talk is well and truly over

Watkins will go to whoever doesn’t land Sesko. He is a proven PL goalscorer that Emery doesn’t fancy.

I think that deal will go through pretty quickly for either side once the Sesko deal is settled.

They already sold Duran. They will need to replace Watkins if he is gone and the striker market is already mad.

They was linked to that samu from Porto but now Newcastle are being linked with him as a back up to Sesko. Been a funny window this year with a lot of teams wanting ST signings

Could anyone educate me on why Watkins is even an option for some? In my eyes, he is the ultimate average PL striker that will get somewhere between 10 and 15 goals a season and maybe has that one very good season. We've seen dozens of such strikers in the PL. They're decent, will never be top and might very easily have a really bad season because that's just their level. The guy was benched last season by Rashford. I am really not getting what's the attraction unless he is bought by someone like City as backup for their main man for something like 30m.

Totally agree with you mate. People gagging for us to sign Darren Bent. Madness!

You've answered your own question. That said, I'm all in on the Sesko brigade. Youthful vigor over experience for me.

I still reckon if we sell the bomb squad + Hojlund, we might go in for him too.

Sesko has got my muppet mode fully engaged.

Where’s your sense of muppet?
My sense of muppet is after a keeper.

All seriousness we will more than likely be done if we sign Sesko, a lot of money out the door, and I think we wait for Casemiro to leave before we invest in midfielder and move Onana on next year.

He has 35 goals in his last two PL seasons, which is a 17.5 average and higher than your 10-15 range. The only strikers to score more goals in these seasons are Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, literally the two best strikers in the league (who are both on penalty duty while Watkins isn't at all times). Coming third after those two players isn't exactly the definition of "your ultimate average PL striker", which should be somewhere in the 8-12 range going by the wordings. He's also extremely durable, there's one missed league game in those two last seasons, and he has missed 6 league games in his five years in the league. His worst goal tally in the league is 11, in five years, so he doesn't "very easily have a really bad season" either.

Villa also hasn't been top 5 in goals scored in the last two seasons; you could say that's down to Watkins not scoring enough, but I'd rather argue he could take it up a notch and be a 20+ goal striker for a team like Liverpool, City or Arsenal - both this upcoming season as well as the last few seasons had he played there.

Maybe we just have different definitions of average. But if Sesko gets the same amount of goals at United the next five seasons as Watkins has for Villa, I don't think a lot of people would call him average either.

Newcastle might be desperate enough now.
Would you move from Villa to Newcastle if you were Watkins? Seems like a sideways move at best, with his last opportunity to get a big move.

Gets a Champions League campaign though. He may not get the chance again.

I was doing a play on his name

I’ve never thought terribly much of Watkins if I’m honest
Watkins isn't the best striker however his current level is much higher than Sesko. Fingers crossed Sesko kicks on and fulfills his potential in the near future
