It's pretty simple: they raise their game and our players drop down by a couple percent. At this level, that's more than enough not to win. It's one of the toughest things for a club and management to get right, ensuring that the players have the right attitude. Making them feel like they must win at all costs. Making them almost angry at the opponent, wanting to destroy them.
Fergie was a master at this, he would use every trick in the book, even making shit up. It works in other sport too, anyone who's watched The Last Dance, Michael Jordan used to lie to himself to generate that extra couple percent.
When you watch our games, you simply don't see the level of aggression and intensity. It's especially obvious at the end of the games when we're supposed to be chasing a winner. The players look more content about drawing. And when they lose, it's no big deal, it's just where the club is now. That's the attitude they have. Back in the day under Fergie if we lost it was a major problem throughout the club. Fergie would go as far as to get the whole staff in a room to berate them. It's standards and mentality, simple as that.
These players are much better than what they show.
