Big season for the boy.

Looked technically suspect at times but unfair to judge him during that horror show of a season.

All the best!

I quite like him to be fair. Raw for sure but always willing to provide an outlet and improves the physicality of the team for sure. Looking forward to seeing how him and Cunha link up soon.

What I like about Dorgu is that he is quick, physical and that he always goes on good runs....

What I don't like about Dorgo - if he gets the ball with a defender ahead of him - he NEVER tries to cross or beat his man. It's always a safe pass back to whoever is behind him

Fair points. I do think that last one sums the whole team up too though. Not many who get their head up and try to be brave. Sometimes it’s because of lack of movement but often theres an incisive pass on and we choose to go back which inevitably leads to a hoof.

He looked great today. Powerful, dangerous in the final 3rd, a presence and pacy. Finally saw some potiential in him as a Utd player. This will be a big year for him.

I never got the criticism . I thought he looked really promising last season all things considered. Gets into great positions . His crossing alright needs significant improvement

The criticism is that his technique looks poor and he struggles to consistently make short range passes. He isn’t a player that any top team would have as first choice as a left wing back option.

Given technical problems are the hardest thing to improve, it’s difficult to see why we decided to spend a small fortune on him. I’m finding it very hard to believe that we couldn’t have found a much better option in the £30m-35m bracket this summer, looking at purchases Liverpool and City have made. I’d still regard LWB, after CF and GK, as the position most in need of an upgrade.

We paid 25m plus add ons... since when is that a small fortune?

He has been here for 6 months... I bet you were probably saying those same things with Evra and Vidic...

We have also signed Leon as a backup so I am not sure how it is more important than a CM.

You would have hated teenage Cristiano Ronaldo

The price tags are nowhere near the same nor their positions, but he reminds me of Antony.

Gets in good positions, hardworking, very good for our balance and width but lacks quality in the final third to be influential for us.

Don't see it yet, but at least he isn't terrible or bad.

Unsurprisingly, I didn’t. He had exceptional technique, just not the experience at that time to use it properly. Obviously it was questionable whether he ever would put it fully together but his debut against Bolton was mesmeric. One of the weirdest examples you could have given!

It’s a long time ago but I didn’t have any particular issue with Evra or Vidic, despite their disastrous debuts. Evra I had seen play for Monaco, and was fairly confident he would come good. Vidic I was less certain about but the reality was that, if he hadn’t worked out, he’d have just been a backup for a couple of years and then moved on. Of course, this was also against the backdrop of SAF being in charge and having a lot of confidence in his decision making.

Anyway, we will see. People generally seem happy with Dorgu’s displays last season, whereas I thought he was poor. I’m obviously hoping I’ll ultimately be proved wrong and he goes on to be our Roberto Carlos/Ashley Cole for the next decade. I’ll be very happy if you are quoting this back to me if he makes team of the year next season!

I liked him last season - I thought his biggest issue was his confidence. He put the ball in some really dangerous areas but we just didn't fill the box or have a striker who attacked the spaces.

I think he'll surprise some this year.

Odd comment mate. Ronaldo’s technique was exceptional for an 18 year old.

Re Dorgu, I have my doubts on his technical ability but far too early to tell yet. Lots to like about him however.

It wasn't exceptional it was completely wild. He loved a trick but was just as likely to trip himself over then beat an opponent, and he hadn't refined his crossing or shooting at all.

My point is that these things can still be improved and enhanced. Dorgu is obviously never going to reach Cristiano's level, but he can certainly improve the traits needed to be a WB in this system. He's not just set in stone like he is now.

People have no patience.

Bit of a hyperbole. Cristiano was a bit hyperactive, but his ball control was always brilliant and his crosses were dangerous. He was already taking free kicks during his first season and posed an aerial threat. Dorgu has good physical attributes, but other than that, it's hard to see big potential with him.

Why's everyone comparing every young player we sign with Ronaldo?

Shock news - none of them will hit Ronaldo levels - if one does it will be a freak occurrence.

Seemingly because some posters expect that very young players should already be polished and consistent, otherwise they're shite. So people bring up Ronaldo, who was neither of those things until he was 21.

The first game of the season (Arsenal) will be a good test for him. He's had some time to get to grips with the demands of this league. He knows the fitness levels he needs to hit, and he knows the quality his passes and crosses need to have.

I don't know how he will have addressed all that during his summer vacation. But the mental side of it should be easier for him, the league is not a surprise anymore, and with Mbeumo and Cunha, maybe he will figure out how to sync up with them.

We don't have the luxury of slowly introducing him into the squad, he needs to come flying out of the blocks. We have other players I'd prefer giving a chance to over Dorgu, but he's who the head coach wants, so I hope the very best for him.

I'd actually say it's his quality in deeper areas that is more worrying for me. Sure he doesn't seem to be a good finisher when he gets into goal-scoring positions, but when he's in attacking positions out wide he supplies quite decent balls into the box. It's his ability to play forward balls through the lines that he tends to struggle with (although he did make one fantastic one against Leeds so hopefully it's something that he's improving).

I'm more than willing to sacrifice some technique for getting some physicality into our team.

People underestimate how important pace, energy and tenacity are. We've been so weak for so long, I'm thrilled to have Dorgu.

Didn't Dorgu also play a great pass through to Garnacho in an EL game, maybe Bilbao at home? Garna completely fluffed it though.

I have my doubts about his ability to add goals from WB, but he'd have finished the season with a few assists if anyone in our team could finish. So his ability to create openings for the team doesn't concern me

I've been very critical of him but wow he has seemed bit a changed man this pre-season. I don't want to speak too soon but he looks both physically and technically much sharper by orders of magnitude compared to last season. I guess it's easy to forget he's still only 20 and came from another league in January.

He still has lots to improve on but say it quietly, he's looking promising so far. Let's just hope he can offer a bit more in the final third.

That’s really promising to hear. Really hoping he has a good season and makes that lwb his. Hoping he has a good season that’s allows Leon to be an understudy under him and settle into the league. Don’t mind him rotating with Shaw at lwb too hoping Shaw revives his career at United. Really want to see Heaven blossom at LCB

I really could not believe the criticism he was getting last season as I thought he did quite well considering his age and the circumstances of him joining the club (new league, new manager, new structure)
I said in another post that I am looking forward to seeing the improvement in our players that are under 24 this season as that is when big improvement can be made and Dorgu is one that has all the tools to take big steps this season.

Yup. Can’t believe how badly people kept criticising him when we’ve seen Dalot dish in far worse performance all season.

He’s going to be much better now that he has Cunha in front of him.

He was improving game by game last season.

I'd say towards the end of last season he was one of our best top 3 players of the final month.

I think considering how poor we were last season United fans wanted our first signing to be a saviour at LWB who has some dribbling ability of Giggs with some crossing ability of Beckham.

Now we have some new signings of Cunha and Mbeumo I think peoples expectations of Dorgu will be balanced rather than him being our only signing last January.

He looked great at times. Could improve his final ball but his pace and power getting in behind was great.

He's a monster at duels. Got the better of AWB and Todibo. That's nothing to sniff at.

I thought he was very good last night. Playing against AWB (who looked sharp), he held his own. Good in the duals and very quick moving forward. He and Cuhna could and should form a good partnership down that side.

He was in fact so good last night that every passage of play was on the left in the first half. Amad was getting nothing, not sure if that was the strategy or not almost all attack were on the left.

With his pace and aggression on the ball he was the perfect foil for Cunha and Bruno. Lots of improvement still needed but it’s encouraging

Both Cunha and Bruno prefers to drift to the left so I think that played in to it too. Amad got a little isolated on his wing at times, once Mbeumo comes into the team I think we will look more balanced.
