I think he'll turn into a top tier, Denzel Dumfries style WB in a couple of years. Just need some patience. He's only 20.

Prefer him by a million miles to Dalot, but he's still hard to watch. Give him some time though, he can still become a very decent player.

Why are those particular set of stats bullshit? They all seem relevant to his role
Because they don’t paint a full picture. There’s probably 50 or so metrics that are captured, if he’s poor on every single other one. What does that mean? It’s like saying a car is brilliant at acceleration, top speed, but then it’s bottom on safety, can’t break and constantly crashes.

you see so many of these graphics where people have selected things to make a player look good. What you actually need are the metrics of what makes a good full back, and then look at the stats. These types of analysis are pointless.

I feel like I am going insane reading through some of the comments and wondering if my eyes are deceiving me

  1. He is 20, and already has near perfect understanding of the role. Quality wise, it isn't there yet, but his understanding of the role is
  2. He is solid defensively
  3. He never stops running, and is quick at being where he needs to be depending on if we are attacking or defending
  4. He is strong and has great athleticism
  5. He is excellent at finding attacking positions and always offers a passing option and willingness/ability to play one-twos and combination football with his team mates. Cunha seems to enjoy him.
  6. Has improved his crossing since he joined. Still not good enough, but improved nonetheless
  7. Solid aerially, helps us in set-pieces both defensively and offensively. Think it was his header that assisted Bruno's goal against Chelsea?
  8. Decent ball carrier
  9. Draws a lot of fouls
  10. Top mentality and attitude
but..

He also has flaws and deficiencies to his game that can hurt us and limit us, but I think a lot of that has to do with him still adjusting to the pace of the league and his lack of experience in the league more than anything else.

  1. He is prone to loose touches. I actually think he has improved here. When he joined, he had them regularly, but they are less frequent now.
  2. Average crosser. I think he also has improved here. He made a brilliant cross for Mbeumo against Chelsea that should have been a goal, and he made one or two more semi-dangerous ones against Liverpool when he came on. It needs to be worked on still.
  3. Poor at dribbling/take-ons. It is what it is, he will probably never be the type of wingback that takes players on like Nuno Mendes, but there are very few wingbacks like that. Dimarco, Dumfries and Pedro Porro are poor at taking players on too. They're still some of the best wingbacks in the world.
  4. Prone to stopping attacks when he has the opportunity to cause danger, and passes the ball back too much. Needs to be more fearless and not be afraid of having a go.

Reading comments like "Terrible footballer", "Malacia lite", or "Denzel's useless brother" is just a boring read. Doesn't really bring anything to the thread, and may as well not post, in my opinion.

Is he actually poor on all the others? Quick look at FBref doesn't suggest he is.

The graphic simply shows what he's good at, the fact so many have an over the top reaction because they don't rate him is more on them. Nothing stopping people from posting stats on areas he needs to improve.

Still looks super raw to me. Huge improvement needed. Strangely looks to have regressed in terms of physicality compared to when he played his first few matches for United.
Don't know if you are referring to the last game only or wider set of games. I also saw comments regarding Šeško being weak physically vs Liverpool. But getting onto the pitch mid game and being instantly up to speed vs Liverpool's pressing in away game at Anfield that they are loosing is harder than it looks (especially for Šeško as he is fresh to the league). I have time for both give them both at least a year more in the league and I think both have something to provide.

Exactly, is there a set of stats that demonstrate the amount of times the opposition leave him in a huge amount of space knowing that he won't threaten them if he gets the ball. Or how often he miscontrols the ball with a heavy first touch.

We desperately need a new lwb if we want to continue with this system. It's not even dorgus fault he is a raw young player who should be a back up at best. We need someone who can contribute offensively there either through dribbling or crossing ability

He could be great at all those other elements. But without seeing the whole picture, those stats don’t tell us anywhere near enough.

There just seems to be a trend of posting selective stats to back up an opinion, but it’s done dishonestly in its selectivity.

Give him at least 1.5 more years to level up: remember how crap Evra and visit eas in their first 6-9 months. And Evra came from a champs league final team Monaco whereas Dorgu came from a mid tier series A squad.
Slight exaggeration as Evra really hit the ground running at the start of 06-07 after playing from Jan to May 2005. I've always felt his bad debut did a lot of heavy lifting when people talk about his poor start.

Do people realize every time he plays for us he’s always in acres of space when attacking? Do you think that’s a coincidence?

He’s attacking output is so poor that teams give him the space to focus on other areas defensively because they know he will not hurt them.

He is a liability going forward and a momentum destroyer far worse than dalot.

He is also 20 and could go on to fine tune his game and become of good fullback/wingback but he cannot be relied on currently.

We need to invest in that position

Feels like dismissing them entirely because you don't rate him, and therefore you want to frame stats that show him in a positive light as disingenuous is BS.

Reality is he's 20 and a developing player who has positive sides to his game, but also has negatives which need to be ironed out. He's not hopeless, but he's also not a world beater.

Seems okay.

Read my posts. I said he was as a promising player, and I haven’t said a don’t rate him.

What I’ve said is that selective stats prove nothing, and somewhat useless and don’t prove anything about a player.

I’ll get off his back now I know he’s only 20.

He was amazing In pre season, one of our best players but him and Ugarte (who I thought would come good) have been really poor. Hopefully with him just a confidence/ rawness thing.

He's definitely Okay for a 20 y.o., but it's less than okay as starter for even a top 10 PL team.

It’s not like Evra was an absolute top full back before we bought him, helping take Monaco to the CL final.

And Evra struggled for a few months is all, within 4 months or so he was looking like the player we bought.

Clearly a work in progress....fans will have to be patient and hope he learns quickly. Got the physical tools -- but technically still quite poor and can be prone to defensive lapses.

After the pre-season I was expecting more production from him but as with most young players -- he's inconsistent.

Problem is the wing backs are important in our system as they effectively become wingers during the offensive phase and have to sync well with our left #10.

I feel Dalot and Dorgu's patchy form is one reason Cunha doesn't have the same type of numbers as Mbeumo who has been paired with Amad (the most talented attacking wing back we have)

I agree. I doubt he becomes top notch as his technical ability is just not there coupled with poor crossing
It's hard to imagine him becomes a top wingback. But to be good fullback, he has a good chance (imho).

Defensively, his positioning is off (which can be improved though as he's young), but going forward, he has zero end product and that will be more difficult to improve

Evra joined us in the January transfer window. Had a poor first half season and was in an out of the team at the beginning of the next one. Didn’t get his first assist until October. He definitely took more than 4 months to look like a top player. And that was playing in a strong, winning team. He was also a good 4 or 5 years older than Dorgu is now when he signed. Which is the main reason he had a better CV.

Would we rather have Dorgu or Kirkez?

Last season's Kerkez for sure, but this season he's an even more blunt a weapon than Dorgu. I don't think you'd want either of them as your starting attacking wingback. They're both young and will hopefully hit some form and then the question might be more interesting but right now... Dorgu has 1 assist and Kerkez has 0.

What you have made of his CV/ability when he was Dorgu’s age, playing 4th tier French football for Nice reserves?

Well I wouldn’t have bought him would I? I’d have waited until he showed the ability he did before taking massive chance on an extremely rough 20 year old before making him a first teamer for Manchester United?
It’s not like we got Dorgu on the cheap either, at 30m € he’s not far off breaking into the top 10 left back transfers of all time.

We could easily get our money back for Dorgu in the next window if we wanted to, but who would you buy for 30 million instead of him?

We need a better starting option, but when you factor in Dorgu’s age and athleticism, he’s worth his place in the wider squad.

Dorgu shouldn’t be a starter in reality but we’re limited. He definitely should be in our team even if we buy a wingback, a squad rotation player.

The power and pace he has sure makes the defence nervous especially against tired legs. Hopefully he can one day start getting his final product right.

He's more of what we will see moving forward in the Premier League.

Is he easy on the eye and technically silky smooth? No. Is his positioning perfect defensively? No.

What he is is a super athlete. An absolute physical weapon who can effectively occupy a flank on his own.

It's the same way I look at Sesko or Mbuemo. Mbuemo is nowhere near as technically talented as United wide forwards of a bygone era but he's an absolute monster physically. Direct, stocky, aggressive, rapid and a workaholic. Likewise, Sesko won't score anywhere near the number of goals United CFs of old scored - but he's there because he's 6ft 5", runs like an antelope and jumps like a stag.

Dorgu is okay for a punt. Problem for me is he didn't come at a punt fee, so slightly different expectations
That’s the issue. People keep saying he was a cheap punt but he’s a really expensive LB purchase, especially when you consider we purchased him from a Serie A relegation battle. Someone above said we could easily get our money back for him - my view is that if we tried to sell him currently we would struggle to get £10m.

Absolutely fine as a squad player but a LWB is an essential purchase, ideally in January.

Leon is the punt. Dorgu is okay but I still think he has it in him to improve

That was me above, and did yu look at his stats. He cost 30 million when he played for a struggling italian club. Now he is at United and getting a lot of playtime. In what world would you struggle to get 10 million for him? He is not the finished product and still raw at 20, but you pay for the future Dorgu as well. We would probably want 40-50 at this point.
