Not sure if this guy's good enough but he's comfortably better than Dalot and would certainly provide better balance to our side.

Feel the same, I am far from his biggest fan but much better to invest in him than Dalot who's clearly never going to be good enough in that position.

Dorgu was adding a lot of balance last season and this pre-season. His end-product and technique is poor surely, but I think we are a better team with him than Dalot.

Not a fecking chance.

You must not have watched them play then because they were awful.

Those Vidic and Evra starts of their careers are the worst things that could have happened to this club, this will be repeated for the next 50 years.

Yeah and modric’s start to his Madrid career is the worst thing to happen to them as well. There are countless examples.

12 months into Evra/Vidic’s United careers is midway through the 06/07 season, when they both ended the season in the premier league team of the year.

I watched pretty much every match at that time and whilst they had slow starts they were nowhere near as bad as Dorgu has been for a consistent period of time. He’s more Quentin Fortune type level from what we’ve seen so far (and that’s probably being quite harsh on Fortune).

Evra was only terrible for half a season, then he started showing big strides of improvement.
Not the case with Dorgu who has been consistently pretty shit with the odd OK game.

Dorgu still has plenty of time but he needs to show a lot more refinement to his game - there's been plenty better at the same age for lesser teams.

Dorgu has been nowhere near as bad as you are suggesting. And it hasn’t been 12 months since he came into the team yet. Also, Evra and Vidic came to a club that was day and night in terms of the quality of players around them and the vibe around the team. Dorgu walked into a nightmare. Context matters.

Dorgu has absolutely not been consistently shit. He needs a ton of improvement for sure but to say he’s just been crap since he’s come in is a little over the top.

It's not over the top at all. He's consistently poor, there's very few good performances from him. It's mostly technique related too, but also times switching off defensively.

This whole technique thing is getting out of hand. He could improve his crossing alone and he would be a much, much more effective wingback. There are people here who desperately want El Hadji Malick Diouf from West Ham despite being worse defensively than Dorgu, simply because he is a good crosser of the ball. Dorgu gets himself into these positions all the time, and is one of the wingbacks that carries the ball into the penalty area the most. If he can improve on his decision making and crossing, he would be a great asset. This idea that you need to be of the level of Nuno Mendes with elite technique to be a good wingback is ludicrous.

This is getting ridiculous. I started watching United in 1998. Thanks to new TV packages, I never missed even a single game starting in 2001, (until Ten Hag) well before Evra and Vidic arrived. Comparing them with Dorgu as you’re doing, and pretending Dorgu comes out on top is certainly a hot take, but I disagree strongly.

They were bad for what, a month? Dorgu's been here how long again, almost 10 months? Maybe Dorgu needs a spell in the reserves. I'm not all that interested in how he might play years from now, because his improvement has been minor. He's not good enough for a top-half club, and I'm not convinced he's good enough for a bottom half one either.

If Onana improved his shot-stopping he'd be a much, much more effective keeper.
If Hojlund improved his shooting, he'd be a much, much more effective forward.
If my auntie had wheels…
Those small percentages are what makes someone elite. Dorgu’s crossing is not great and has not been getting any better.

I am not one of those wanting Diouf.

Do you mean out of the handful in the league or the two in our team? Mostly I'd say that is down to Amorim relying on wing backs to advance the ball. He advances the ball but then doesn't know what to do with it. Occasionally it looks like he knows what to do, but his feet don't.

Decision-making is the footballing brain, and that's something that is almost innate. At this age and playing at this level, his quickness of thought is not going to drastically improve. That ability to see the game (to know where and when to attack, defend, speed up, slow down, pass, shoot; to predict what is going to happen around them) is the crucial metric.

I don't see it with him. He should go on loan annd work on these areas out of the spotlight glare of United. He’s not what we need currently. Lecce was probably his level.

I don’t see anything really, even through the rawness to be honest. Would love him to smash egg all over my face on that one.

Tend to agree with this. With good decision making and crossing ability, he could be a decent option while we improve the squad, and probably be a good depth option going forward. But if we want to get back to the highest level we need top quality players on every position, and arguably especially the WBs in this system, and I have a hard time seeing Dorgu becoming that.

He will probably get the rest of this season to develop, because if we do dip into the market in January, I suspect the focus would be midfield. But we probably should address LWB in the summer at the latest, unless Dorgu takes major steps.

So many words to express something so stupid. The idea that people's footballing brain doesn't improve after 20 years old is mental. You should tell Rio that for example.

I think it has gotten better, compared to last season. It is still not good enough, though. Improving is what matters.

I mean of all the fullbacks and wingbacks in the world. He is very near the top out of all of them. So, we have established that he is able to advance the ball forward and into the penalty area because Amorim relies on his wingbacks to do that, so he does that well. The problem is that he doesn't know what to do with it - yet - hence my point on decision making. Decision making can easily be improved, and usually does with experience. Not just that, he is playing with a whole attacking trio and they don't know each other's movements, patterns or link up well enough. This isn't just Dorgu, this goes to all of our players.

But it isn't innate. Not at all. It seems like you're trying to overcomplicate this. You could mention any wingback in the world, and there would be plenty of holes in their game at Dorgu's age. They could have improved on any aspect, like quickness of thought, decision making, crossing - anything. And they did, which is why they are better now than what they were 21.

The bolded bit is hyperbole, and why discussions like these lead nowhere. You've decided that you don't like him, and resort to this. Lecce, really? All the top clubs in Serie A were after him, and Napoli was very close to an agreement. It is always the same on here. If they aren't good enough for us and there is something about a certain player they don't like, they're by default a Championship player, or Lecce or whatever. You can be a Premier League quality player without being good enough for us. He is topping statistics among fullbacks/wingbacks in many important aspects of the game, so clearly there is something to work on with him. I do agree we need a new LWB though, he can be a squad player and we will see how he develops.

We signed him from Lecce, it wasn’t a random diss.

Vidic wasn't even anywhere near as bad as people make out. Obviously he wasn't at the level that he later reached, but there was a lot to like about him right from the start. I'd certainly say he was better than Dorgu has been so far.

Evra on the other hand was pretty damn bad.

I know we signed him from Lecce, that's my point. Because he isn't performing well enough for us right now at the age of 20-21, his level is only back to Lecce? If that is his level, why were many big clubs after him?

So many fans just take for granted the level and quality of Premier League and the amount of pressure playing for United puts on a player, especially someone that young and inexperienced. The sheer pressure alone will probably make you do mistakes you otherwise wouldn't have done.

He has to show that he's better than Dalot. Dorgu has been comfortably worse for the last month or so, so Dalot rightfully kept the starting spot. Dorgu was better when he came on against Forest so hopefully that'll be the start of him regaining form.

Dalot has been absolutely awful. Worst player this season, how does he deserve to start?

Pretty sure the air around Dalot has been more useful as LWB, than Dalot.

I rate Dorgu at LWB higher than Dalot, but Dorgu has been worse for the last month or so. His cameo against Brighton was absolutely horrific and Liverpool were instantly much more dangerous down that side as soon as he came on against them.

Trust me, I do hope Dorgu is getting back into form but it's his own fault that he's dropped behind Dalot in the pecking order lately.

Dorgu is terrible going forward. Dalot is a terrible defender. Dorgu isn’t a great defender. Dalot isn’t a great attacker.

He's been underwhelming so far this season but let's not forget he was arguably our best player during preseason.

He's still young, very raw, bit uncomposed at times. I'm not sure if he's good enough to be honest, but we know Dalot isn't either. Shaw LWB and Martinez LCB in the future maybe?

Funnily enough he's not worse than Dorgu so it's quite straight forward.

Whilst Dalot is shit.. I agree with this.. Dorgu is worse. Dalot has some questionable decision-making but Dorgu recently has looked clumsy and his passing has been questionable too.

If not Dorgu, put Maz over on the left. Anything will be better than Dalot.

His giving the ball away, dropping his head down, and jogging back into defense....is beyond infuriating.
Maz is also crap as a wingback. He's far too leggy and can't get up and down the pitch quickly.

Simply need a decent, new lwb. Pretty sure it will happen alongside new mf. Couldn’t do it all in one window.

Watched him live vs Sunderland as a sub. Looked completely out of his depth at this level.

That's interesting, considering that he has never played against Southampton.

Edit; just saw you edited too. Fair enough  That was a poor game by him, indeed.

This means sweet feck all. I personally don't think he was any great shakes in preseason, but regardless, preseason is meaningless.
Are PL games vs Chelsea and Arsenal also meaningless? Because he was pretty solid in those games. Should've had two assists in that Chelsea game if Mbeumo had buried that cross, and was so close to scoring against Arsenal with a great shot from distance too. His general play in those games were much better than what we have seen of him recently.

From a result standpoint sure but let's not pretend if Cunha, Sesko or Mbuemo had been banging them in during preseason we wouldn't have stepped our excitement and expectancy up a notch. It was positive to see Dorgu playing well preseason, as I said he was one of our best players during it but obviously hasn't kicked on.

Dorgu is not a PL player in my opinion, much prefer Dalot. We can’t scout players from outside the PL, Bruno, De Ligt and Lemmens being the exceptions. Just buy proven PL players like Mbuemo.

Starts today over Dalot. He's got his chance, let's hope we see the preseason Dorgu.

Tottenham 2:2 Man Utd
Great game today

Absolute crap for the first 20 minutes and then after that he was probably our best player, or one of them at least
