Only watched the second half but I thought he was decent. I don't think he'll ever be a starting quality player for us but I do think he can at least be an okay squad player

I also only saw the second half and agree that he played well. Either he was fecking horrendous in the first half or there’s quite a few posts here which are more about the baggage the poster brings with them to the thread than what actually happened on the pitch. Which is depressingly routine in these performance threads.

He still turns back on himself too much, whereas ideally you want someone in his position going down the outside of his full-back more to get in to more dangerous crossing positions, but he produced a few moments of quality which you sometimes wonder if he actually has at all in his locker, and at least gives a vague glimpse that he can develop further.

His blocked shot towards the end looked to be nestling in to the corner of the net.
Amorim said that he looks really good in training, but gets very nervous when playing in matches. It can't be easy to come from pretty much nowhere to playing for one of the biggest clubs in world football.
He possibly turns back because he hasn't yet got the confidence to go on the outside, but to me, that second half performance was the best I've seen him, so let's hope that he gets over his nerves and we can get a quality player on the left.

I mean he was quite bad.

The real issue is he’s probably better suited as a true fullback but in this system it requires those wingbacks to be genuine 1v1 threats and creative dynamos with how many times they get isolated positions in the final third, which he’s pretty bad at. I think in a true back 4 he’d be a solid fullback where he’s not asked to do as much apart from hold width and cross.

Really not sure what to make of him. He gets so much ball high up the pitch in dangerous positions im thinking if we could get a top player there it would dramatically change this team, but I also think he must be doing something right to have that many opportunities.... but at times I also think the opposition dont care and let him have it and try to shut down elsewhere.

Great physical traits, but essentially bambi on ice, inherently unstable, always looks like he’s about to lose control.w So often he finds himself in a great position only to hesitate, hesitate a bit longer and then smack it to the opposition.

Should’ve had two assists, however.

Nail on the head. Some people haven't got a bleeping clue. He was brilliant today.

Played one decent cross.

Never takes his first touch forward, he had the ball under no pressure 40 yards from his own goal, falls over it and within 10 seconds Villa have a corner.

A player like Semenyo or Ndaiye in his place would be a monumental upgrade.

As I see it only Dorgu and Cunha did well today. Yes, Dorgu made some mistakes, but over all it was a positive performance from him today.

He did ok today. I'm not going to go in on him cos he's playing to the limits of his ability and in a position and system where he's been asked to be one of the team's most creative players, which is f**king nuts, but you can ask Ruben to explain that one.

Lots of work rate, lots of endeavour, leading to his assist for the equaliser.

That cross in the 2nd half for Cunha is likely to be the cross this kid will ever make in his life, and Cunha misses a sitter from 5 yards.

He had umpteen chances to cross the ball today, and pretty much the only one that wasn't smashed into the nearest defender's legs ended up with Cunya almost scoring.

I think he's useless.
He also won us a fk in a dangerous area through the kind of run he needs to make almost every attack. Not his fault that Mount got greedy and went near post, when the far post looked like goal material all the way. One assist through good pressing/tackling (twice in the moment) and one really nice cross for Cunha.

Credit where it is due, he had a decent game today. Haven't yet seen any link-up between him and Cunha though. They need to work each other out.

His quality on the ball is just what it is but what frustrates me is that there are always a couple of times when he doesn't run back quickly enough. Cunha covering for him isn't necessarily out of the ordinary but him having to do so when Dorgu is not even in camera shot us a problem. One decent overlap from the opposition can kill you there.

I remember ripping into mates for forming an opinion on a performance because they watched Match of the Day highlights. But now, apparently missing the entire first half gives certain 'established' posters the authority to talk down to others (who watched the entire game) for having the temerity to criticise a player’s performance that they witnessed from minute 1-90. How times have changed.

I'm half joking here but I suspect Dorgu is looking good against our other defenders because they're not that great at closing space and engaging on 1 vs 1s, e.g Yoro, Amad, Dalot, Maguire etc.

I think the biggest issue I have with Dorgu and his crossing specifically is that he already does a lot of the hard work by creating the separation with his dribbling but too often has awkward crossing technique, timing and/or just poor direction. Create the yard, wrap your foot around it and aim for the near post and/or penalty spot. Too often, he's taking an extra touch, hesitation or not getting his cross in fast enough.

It can be corrected but I don't have faith in this manager or his team mates to really give him that development or coaching. It's been almost a year now and other than getting more match fitness and rhythm, his game is still largely the same. Lots of earnest endeavour, lots of actions with some bits of genuine quality but let down by inconsistency. It's not helped that we ask so much of him and our players in these wing back positions. I've said this many times now but I think he has interesting potential as an orthodox full back, whose primary role is defence and support plays; his athleticism and ball carrying on the over/under laps can be a useful weapon in a more organised team.

Saying that, he had an assist today and put in a beautiful cross that should have rewarded him another.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

They aren't terrible, but you'd need more faith than Abraham to believe that Dorgu and Sesko are top players in the making. Along with Ugarte and Zirkzee such limited players.

Usual awkward mediocrity first half. Visibly gained a little confidence after the assist and a much improved second. Not a high bar but one of his better games. His best being the 4-1 v Sociedad where he had space to run into.

We celebrate a good cross these days. I also was happy with the cross. Then I felt sad for myself
Villa fans gave Matty Cash a big round of applause for running back toward his goal and passing to another defender, under very little pressure. Maybe there’s something wrong with our fan base? As writing off young players, appears to be the done thing for a lot of them.

Has the engine, speed and physicality for the role but he massively lacks decision making and crossing ability. Way too often he finds himself on good positions and his cross ended up in a really easy catch for Martinez.

Should have had two assists but still I'm not convinced by him. He needs to improve, good news is he's still young and I think he can be coached to be a proper wingback but he's definitely not starting quality at the moment.

I hope i am wrong. I’ll continue applauding these small efforts until I am proven wrong. Fingers crossed

@StatmanDave

Patrick Dorgu’s game by numbers vs. Aston Villa: 15 duels contested 12 duels won 8 touches in the box 8 crosses 5 tackles 4 fouls won 3 chances created 3 clearances 2 big chances created 1 assist

Seem pretty good for me.

Easily his best game for a couple of months, and perhaps his best of the season. Still not great or anything, but if this is the start of an improvement then he couldn't have timed it much better considering Amad is gone for a few games. Hopefully the improvement continues.

12 out of 15 duels is crazy good

Man Utd 1:0 Newcastle
He scored an absolute worldie and in the first half I felt like he was playing very well in general.

That second half, the usual limitations came back with his iffy decision making but hey we got the 3 points thanks to him so whatever

Should be man of the match today. Worked his ass off, scored the winner, very mature in his actions when we needed a breather

Looks well suited to the righthand attacker in a 4231.

Everyone looked awful second half other than heaven due to the bizarre changes

Great finish. Really good in the first half. Was our only real outlet in the second half. Unfortunately, we didn't have many opportunities on the counter.
