Dorgu’s manhood was immense.
Looks a lot better with confidence, no matter if on the wing or at wing back. There will still be ups and downs, but this is what he actually CAN bring to the table, when he is hitting his current top level. This is the reason why we bought him, but he will play stinkers as well on the way to becoming the player we hope for him to become.Looks better as a winger?
I've been pretty sure there is for some time now, however well hidden. He's still barely 21 as well, plenty of time to develop the things he's missing.Looked like he had a bit of confidence about him. That makes me wonder whether there’s a player there.
This performance didn’t come out of nowhere. He’s looking like the player we saw in preseason. Or, at times, in a Denmark shirt. It’s always been obvious (to me anyway) that he had the potential to kick on and become a proper player. The way he was getting completely written off by so many of you was crazy.
If he manages to improve his bottom level and become more consistent, then even if he never becomes a great Premier League player, we'll at least have a solid, versatile squad player on our hands. Which is great because we've had shocking depth for years. His physically means he will always be difficult to deal with even if he's let down by his technique at times. This performance didn’t come out of nowhere. It's almost like he was playing a completely different position and that had everything to do with it.
He will never be a long term LWB for us, thats for certain.
Nah, he’s left footed. He’s well capable of playing on the left. Of course he is. The arrogance of people who use the word “never” based on their opinion of a young, developing footballer will never cease to amaze.
It's not really arrogance though, I find your post far more arrogant. A player who has almost always had bad games at LWB is not suddenly going to be a good LWB because he had a solid game as a right winger, which is ironically the position he played at Lecce.
Another key reason it's not arrogance is because Amorim has basically spelt out he has a huge hole at LWB which is a key reason as to why he won't do his 343. Dorgu is not seen to be the long term solution for this role.
There's little to no evidence to suggest he will grow into a long term LWB for us, and Amorim himself said he wants to sign a player for this. He’s not “suddenly” going to be anything. He is hopefully going to gradually get better and better. With last night being a glimpse of things to come. In the same way that his preseason performances (as a LWB) showed that he was capable of performing like he did last night.
Of course he's capable of growing into LWB. People on here were suggesting that his best position is could be left back based on his previous performances. Yesterday shown he's got some attacking nous in his locker too. It's just a question of seeing if he can learn the position perform it when he's high on confidence. He's 21 and it's his first season in the Prem. There's little to no evidence to suggest he will grow into a long term LWB for us, and Amorim himself said he wants to sign a player for this.
A preseason is a very odd point to hang on to, we both know they mean nothing. Pereira was dubbed preseason pirlo for a reason.. For me it's more arrogant to claim it's crazy that some people would write him off when he's chronically been poor in that role and showed no signs of developing.
He looked far less awkward on the right in a more advanced role, which is probably why Lecce played him there.
He played LB and RW for Lecce and a few other positions. He played most games at LB.It's not really arrogance though, I find your initial post more arrogant. LB is different role to LWB, but even still the proof is in the pudding in a United shirt. He's quite bad as a LWB for us and we'll be signing someone for that role in the next window or the summer one. Dorgu may still have a role to play but I reckon its only as a squad utility player. He played LB and RW for Lecce and a few other positions. He played most games at LB.

No, I said in my last post that I think *if* Dorgu is to have a long term role for us its a utility one as a squad player. You think he's going to be a long term term solution as a right sided forward for us?
I've put in the numbers in my post now. Basically saying that Lecce played him as a right winger (or on the right) as opposed to on the left is rubbish.LB is different role to LWB, but even still the proof is in the pudding in a United shirt. Granted he played on the left more than the right, but 11 appearances on the right is no fluke, he's put out there for a reason in certain games. Where does he play for Denmark?I've put in the numbers in my post now. Basically saying that Lecce played him as a right winger (or on the right) as opposed to on the left is rubbish.
He also had good games in the Europa League last season playing LWB.

The Europa Leauge point is a bit hollow, might as well bring Hojlund back into the fold if we apply this type of mental gymnastics. He is almost always bad for us as a LWB, we have had quite a big sample size to see it and thankfully the manager has eluded to it in his own way multiple times.
He mainly plays on the left for the national team although he have at times filled in on the right. He's been used both in a back four and as wing back in a back five.Granted he played on the left more than the right, but 11 appearances on the right is no fluke, he's put out there for a reason in certain games. Check my posts - I've always called him chronically bad at LWB, because he is chronically bad there. He doesn't almost always play bad as a LWB.
It's amazing what a goal can do to how a performance is perceived.
We've seen last night's performance from him before. A number of times. It's just last night he scored a very good goal.

There's very few games where he's been OK there. There's a reason Amorim has said he needs a right sided Amad on the left, why he says Dorgu is anxious on the pitch and why he's dropped Dorgu for Dalot to play on the left where Dalot is noticeably uncomfortable but still better.
If this is the barometer of "doing a job in a role", he's shown no different to Malacia pre-injury and no different to what our own academy players can do. He's shown no different to Brandon Williams when he had a bright spell either. He mainly plays on the left for the national team although he have at times filled in on the right. He's been used both in a back four and as wing back in a back five.
I don't think it's mental gymnastics to say he's played well against e.g. La Liga teams. It's just recognising a young player can do a job in a role, but might need time to do as well in the same role against PL teams.
My expectation levels aren't high - I've named 3 players currently playing today for PL teams who came on to the scene at 19/20 years old and have taken to the role much better.Because he's 20 and just getting going.
How many starts for United were Amad and Dalot getting at that age?
You expectation levels are way too high for a player just getting his career going. He shouldn't be starting every game at this stage. To be starting most games for United at 20 should require an exceptional talent.
Eh? He was probably our best player. Looked really dangerous going forward. So much more confident than he has the rest of the season. There's a player there. He scored the goal from a set-piece/throw-in which fell to him; I still think he was lacking a bit as an attacking outlet and creative force in open play.
We've seen with him at LWB that he's plenty capable of winning tackles and holding on to the ball (generally by passing backwards), and that was what most of his performance yesterday also involved, with United desperately holding on to the lead. Prior to the goal he hadn't done anything in an offensive sense.
Similar to Ugarte he benefited from mostly playing backs to the wall, as opposed to the onus being on the front foot and making something happen with the ball. When he had the ball he didn't seem threatening in the way an Amad, Mbeumo or Cunha does, he just did well in keeping it. The term "defensive winger" springs to mind.
I'm pleased he got the goal, which was a moment of quality, but I think it's warping some peoples' judgement a bit as to what the rest of his performance actually involved.
