I think he’s clearly a level below the other footballers around him. I remember this from my days as a player. If you have a team that likes to play a certain way, then there’s one player who just can’t do it at the same speed. Takes a second or two longer than everyone else to get control of the ball and move it on. It stands out.
He himself is not slow of course, he’s an athlete. But I don’t see him as a natural footballer from a top level perspective. The small things. Handling the ball, passing it - all at the requisite tempo of the game. It just looks harder for him than others. The same can be said about Ugarte. I noticed they both played blind passes backwards to Arsenal forwards yesterday. Again, I remember these passes from my playing days. They don’t happen in training. It’s the speed of the PL that they struggle with from a footballing perspective. It causes misplaced passes because they are just not tuned, technically, to that frequency.
