Erm he’s scored a few beautiful goals hasn’t he? One flukey volley is not correct. He was unplayable before the injury
He has 3 goals for the club .. nice volley against Newcastle, great shot out of nothing at Arsenal and then a tap in vs City. Everything about him screams full back. You need individual creativity to be a winger, the talent to create something out of nothing. He just doesn't have that. He wasn't unplayable, he played 2 games with Carrick. Very good performances! But he played as basically a wing back in front of a full back to shut down that side in games we had to play a lot deeper and defend a lot more than normal.

I like him, but it's very much I like him as a full back. If we actually use him consistently as a winger, I'd expect far more games like today where we are frustrated that he can't really dribble past players rather than scoring volleys like against Arsenal on a regular basis. Hell even Dalot I think has more creativity and dribbling ability than Dorgu, and you don't see anyone wanting him to be a winger...

The idea he scored a tap in against city tells me you don’t know a great deal about finishing!

Think he is better on the wing. His best attribute is his pace/explosiveness making runs into space or in behind. Also people dribble past him quite easily when he is in defensive positions, so not really suited to fullback. He just needs his match fitness/sharpness back to make the runs.

I mean he snuck in at the back post while their defender was sleeping and just got it on target. Nothing about the way he plays says he should be a winger. Shaw scored a nice goal today, goes that mean he should be more advanced? Oh and he has always been far more talented than Dorgu is with the ball at his feet. Every professional footballer is capable of the odd strike that turns into a great goal. See Evra, who generally had really bad shooting technique but managed to score that goal vs Neuer.

Wasn't "the great shot out of nothing" evidence of "the talent to create something out of nothing"?? Especially given the excellent interplay with Bruno leading up to the shot.

A great shot out of nothing is something that all footballers are capable of.

The talent to create something out of nothing is more like having actual individual creativity to take the ball, run at defenders, dribble past them, create goals for others regularly or for yourself regularly.

We need wingers like Kvara, Olise, Diaz, Yamal, Vini, Doue, etc etc. Wingers who have actual creative talent when they get the ball to make something happen. United will never be a top team without that, and it's something our past is built off of. Dorgu is a good full back type, he doesn't have that level of talent though to be an attacker. Painfully obvious but we might have to go through the painful trial where everyone starts criticizing him for not being something he isn't, as it's expensive finding those players.

I think 2.5 games as a (fit) winger with 3 goals is admittedly a small sample size but many on here were disparaging about his wing back performances and as far as I can see he hasn't been tried here as a left back.

This would seem to indicate that Carrick and the club see him as winger.

We have Amad as a dribbler but it's trickier to beat a man like that in the PL. I don't care if a winger dribbles elegantly past an opponent or blasts past him with his power if the end result is opposition discomfort.

Agreed again

But Valencia had brilliant technique, was much, much faster both in terms of top speed and acceleration, much stronger and was more capable of taking on his man. So their similarity is what exactly?
That's why I said a budget Antonio Valencia...?

Technically just a very poor player and should always be a LB cover. Could work as LW in tough away matches where Wingers will need to double up and make it difficult such as Madrid, Bayern and Barca away, even then I would think having a player who could keep the ball like Cunha and go past players in more valuable then a player who will keep giving it back despite winning it.

Guys, he just returned after a lengthy injury layoff. I take it as a positive that he was getting into decent positions and had a couple of chances. Looking forward to seeing more of Dorgu next season.

It stings whenever I see someone suggesting he's good enough to be a winger for us next season. Shows how far we have fallen.

Did you watch the City and Arsenal matches under Carrick? Carrick’s best matches and Dorgu at least co-MOTM in both.

People have very short memories.
He looked really effective in those games and gave us food for thought that perhaps he wasn't as limited as the daft Amorim system made him look.

However, very much has it all to prove next season as most players should do at this club.

Yup, never seems to be in full control of the ball. Very poor finish today. Cannot be a starter if we want to win the PL.

I am not sure Dorgu gives the ball away more than Cunha.

Yes I did, but I also watched the other 45 matches he played for us. It seems many did not, or they have forgotten what a Premier League winger looks like.

The first time, if I recall, that Amorim deployed him as a winger was against Newcastle on the right wing and he was by far our best attacker. He's mainly played as a wing-back under Amorim. And that spell under Carrick was, hopefully, a sign of things to come. So unlucky to get that injury against Arsenal.

I don't disagree that we could use more forward options, but I would 100% address the defense before I'd address the wide attacking slots, as it is a much weaker area in the team and limits significantly what kind of football we can play. So I'm more than fine with Dorgu getting plenty of matches on the wing next season, actually, I look forward to it.

I’ve said it before; imagine if we had Marcelo, Roberto Carlos, Hakimi or Mendes in our squad. The same people would be screaming to play them as wingers too.

His performances in those games are being massively overstated because expectations were on the floor. I didn’t see anything in those games that would make me ignore every other game he has played for us or think we shouldn’t have better attackers than him. In fact, our squad needs him at full-back more than on the wing, so I don’t understand why people are desperately trying to make a winger out of him.

Yeah said in another thread the prospect of Dalot starting at RB and Dorgu playing winger next season is really discouraging from both an attacking and technical perspective. Should be giving Dorgu a run at LB and getting in a proper technical option at RB along with another wing option who can play both sides even if it’s a youngster punt or a freebie.

People are losing it if they think he can be a winger

He's nowhere near good enough for that role

He started at left back against Brighton in January.

I would imagine that he creates more in an attacking role than Cunha or mbeumo.

He has played very good games for us and was a consistent threat for the opposition. His ceiling is definitely high enough for LW in current team, it's more a question what will be his regular level as I doubt he will retain City/Arsenal form for long.

We might as well upgrade on LW and move him to LB/make shift winger, but i don't buy the narrative about poor technique and such. He didn't play football for 3 months, he might have been given a rest until the end of the season. I am confident with proper preseason he will be a beast again. Not a greatest technician around but he does not have any glaring weakness, and he's the most explosive and athletic player in the squad by far, that itself is very valuable.

Just a reminder that the lad is 21 so writing him off from any position at this stage is a touch premature.

Good post, well said.

He seems to have not gotten back in groove after the long injury layoff. Thought he looked slow in the last couple of matches, havent seen the burst of pace from him maybe he's protecting the hamstring.

I think he'll be a good left back. He scored one (let's be honest) flukey volley from range and it makes people think he's a left winger? No chance. He has 0 creativity to his game, he can't dribble, he's not explosive. He's a hard worker, steady technique and can be a support player with the odd decent cross. That's a left back. Never a winger.
This. Well close - he had a purple patch but the fundamentals of a good attacking player aren't there.

Agree with those saying he's not a winger. He did a good job playing further forward in the Newcastle, Man City and Arsenal games where he was being used as an auxiliary wing back when we had a lot of defending to do.

Those aren't the typical demands of a winger and in the majority of matches we'll need a player who puts a lot more onus on the attacking side of their game.

You could tell he was a full back during the Amorim era when a good portion of our chances would fall to Dorgu and he'd get a nosebleed. Not his fault but it's a little curious so many people have blanked that from their memories and convinced themselves he's a winger.

Agree. The patience of this fan site is ultra short.

I actually think that Dorgu has done well in the minutes he has played since the injury. Especially when you consider that he has been injured for several months now and is only just getting back into shape. It is easy to see that he gets into good positions, is in good combinations and contributes far more defensively than the other wing types in the squad.

What makes people thing he'd be a good LB for us?

He looked rather poor as a LWB, hasn't really ever played as LB for us and had his best matches as LW

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me either. I think he would be found out on defensive ability, particularly positional awareness and reading of the game. Best role in the short term is probably as a squad option for the wing, where he can be used as a role player, when the game is stretched or we need a bit more solidity on either side.

He is a strange player, in my opinion. Capable of some really good actions, but also switches completely off sometimes. I guess you could attribute it to being young, but not all 21 year-olds have it that bad. Should give him another season as a squad player and then assess.

His skillset.

A LWB is of course a halfway point between a left back and a left winger. In a system that has abolished wing backs - he’d need to try and find a home in one of the two roles. As a wing back - he showed very poor attacking quality for a year, and constantly found himself receiving the ball in dangerous positions and not demonstrating the quality to do anything with it. I think naturally, the observation would not be that he should be given greater attacking responsibility.

Regarding playing left back, it’s just simply easier to learn. It’s not that he’d necessarily shown himself to be a brilliant defender, however - he has attributes that could make him an effective left back in the modern game. He can run all day, he’s fairly quick, and has a good physique. Playing as a forward for a club of United’s level requires a high level of God-given talent, which to me - he clearly doesn’t have. He has not shown the footballing ability to say he can be relied upon to make a consistent attacking difference at the highest level of football.

Full back is simply somewhere players like him typically end up. More talented wingers like Young and Valencia ended up there eventually because they were simply not, or no longer, good enough to make regular attacking difference. Aaron Wan-Bissaka made the move earlier, as have several others, like Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra. The tools Dorgu DOES have offensively are good supplementary tools from an attacking perspective, but not enough to be the primary threat.

I don’t know why people have chosen to write off his year at wing back, which evidenced poor attacking quality in dangerous positions and explain it as him being ‘out of position’ or something, and then advocate for him to be in those same positions he continually fecked up. We’re asking him to do what top teams are asking of Doue, Kvara, Vini etc. I see him as a player like Frimpong at Liverpool, who is clearly never in a million years going to be good enough to simply be a Liverpool forward, despite him being a ‘can play there’. I’d be overjoyed if Liverpool genuinely considered him a key forward. Frimpong was bought as a right back, having played at wing back. He also played as a winger for Leverkusen at times. But he’s a long way from being a Liverpool winger, and they’d have never signed him to play as a winger. He’s very similar to Dorgu.
