Patrick Dorgu | 2026/27 Performances

Because I’ve actually had the pleasure of watching more than my fair share of quality wingers at United and across the league over the years.

Left wing might be his best position but it’s likely not the best option for a United team with ambitions of getting back to the top In my opinion.

In an earlier post, I used Fellaini as an Example. His best position for United was probably at the 10. Maximized his qualities. Great for him but I’ve watched Rooney & Bruno play there. It’s hard not to see everything he doesn’t bring to the role.

He was one of our best performers and goal scorers in two key games against the league leaders during a half of the season where we collected more points than any of them. He’s also only a kid and has already showed a lot of improvement.

The best Utd teams have always mixed a range of different talents (physical, technical etc) with various hard working squad players being instrumental to our success, even if they weren’t the stand out stars.

EG Park wasn’t flashy like some of our other wingers, but in certain games his tactical understanding and physical attributes made him an absolutely key player. There’s a place for players like Dorgu in a title challenging squad if we get the rest of our recruitment right.

It's difficult for many on here to look past the magical moments vs City and Arsenal. I hope he makes me look foolish but I struggle to see anything other than a physically gifted wingback cosplaying as a rather limited winger.
agree. Some fans can't look past goals and and equate that to good performances. (The same goes for other players in this squad). It doesn't matter to some if the guy can't recieve the ball in tight spaces or make the correct pass if he scores a screamer against arsenal.

But it wasn't just goals. He had some genuinely excellent performances where he gave opposition defences a hard time, with them struggling to contain his pace and power. He won't start every game, but he's already shown he can be a very impactful player in certain games.

Dorgu plays like a winger in a pickup game who doesn’t care if he’s asked back. Meaning, if he gets the ball he hares off and will attempt a shot, occasionally scoring an audacious goal, but in terms of interplay with teammates, making selfless runs to create space, attacking 1-2s, crossing the ball, and setting up chances for others — I haven’t seen it. I don’t know if that’s being coached into him or not.

Still seems like a player without a position in this team. I don’t see him as a fullback. As a winger he’s more Chris Eagles than Giggs. I’d say what he really needs is a season loan to a Championship club where he is played strictly as a winger, kind of like how Amad was good but not ready when he went on loan.

Last year he was pre-season elite. This pre-season he’s looked very raw.

3 of his 4 assists were crosses, and he should have had more. 1-2s with Bruno that resulted in a cracking goal against Arsenal, and our 7th highest chance creator despite starting only 15 games last season. I think he's doing more than fine, and we should absolutely not consider loaning him to a Championship club.

Weird. I've seen all of those things. Indeed, one of those audacious goals was after an attacking 1-2 which opened up the space for the shot. Against Brighton at the end of of last season he was the difference maker with a goal and an assist and an overall performance which caused Brighton a lot of issues - opening things up with his movement and runs. In limited appearances last season his G/A per minutes ratio was better than Mbeumo and Amad and on a par with Cunha's - with half them them being assists and half goals.

I would be absolutely astounded if coaches aren't working with him on those things. The fact that he's already shown a lot of improvement since he joined, becoming more effective in the process, would also suggest that. He's very far from the finished article, but he's only 21 and has some very useful attributes which you can't coach. It'd be nice to see fans give him a little more grace and see if he can continue developing. He may not be the profile of winger fans want, but he can still be an incredibly valuable squad player.

Interesting to see the different perspectives on Dorgu. Personally, I think some have this huge expectation of him but the reality is hes is 21 years old and was signed for 25m. I think he is a bargain with raw potential. Where he lacks technical ability, he makes up for it in raw power, stamina and athleticism.

It would be wrong to judge him in pre season, I thought he was outstanding before his injury and in the game against Brighton. He is no fuss, extremely direct and he has this ability to bring energy to other players. Not every player needs to be intricate, Mbeumo is not. Given what we have, its nice to have a naturally wide player. As for left back, I think he would do well there, but my mind has been turned after the performances higher up the pitch. The goals he scored is not how I judge him, it more what he offers to the team. Rotation next season is where I think his role is, not ready to start, needs more experience and maturity but the future is bright.

He kind of reminds me of a young Bale, without the technical ability, that raw power can be unstoppable.

He could be a real star this season in an attacking role.
He has the raw attributes to terrorise defenders!

Should be coming off the bench for minutes at either LB or LW in our easier games. Should be starting our hardest games at LW when we need more defensive solidity.

He doesn't need to be someone we build the team around for him to still be valuable

Having him is useful, particularly against tough opposition where we want a more defensively-sound starting 11 who still possess the athleticism to threaten on the break

he's a direct player with perhaps a power shot but not good enough as a dribbler for a LW. Still think conversion to a fullback would eliminate his weakness. He'd make a lot of runs and can be drilled to defend better. That is always easier than pick up some skills going past players.. at the same time, he could as well be deployed as a ST and do well there. The less touches he has the better imho.

People got carried away too easily with a little sample of games as a LW

Dorgu is clearly not Bale. He is Dorgu, and he is developing into a real weapon. Im with Kobbie in thinking, that he will take it to the next level this season.

He’s not easy on the eye by any means but was very effective in some games last year. Looking forward to seeing his progression this year.

The stubbornness Carrick has for constantly playing Dorgu out of position is like Amorim's stubbornness regarding Mainoo. He is clearly not a left winger, it's why Leece chose not to play him there and instead played him either on the right wing or as a wingback. His overall game does not suit that left wing position whatsoever and what's more annoying is that he could genuinely be a good wingback if played there.

He's not playing him out of position. Hes a winger, whether you think he's good enough is a different conversation.

Cannot knock his hustle off the ball but on it..... Jeez he's a tough watch sometimes. Can't have both Mbeumo and Dorgu start week in, week out in the prem there's 0 control up top with them two.

Well, we don't play with wingbacks anymore (thank God), so that's kind of a non-starter.

He can play the ring wing slightly better, as that's what he did at Leece and it allows him to cut inside more. But on the left, he is absolutely more of an attacking fullback.

He's literally our generations park ji Sung.

You will see him in the biggest games

What he brings off the pitch is more important to managers than fans due to his inconsistent attacking ability.

If he's going to attack he's better on the right so he can cut in. It's not easy to make a winger play on the outer foot. It makes sense why Lecce and Denmark played him there.

Ji was a technically brilliant player.

Dorgu has his uses but for a top team, you want a player with far better technique playing for you, especially in attack.

He could be a weapon when in big games when the game is stretched but he’s going to struggle when we are mean to dominate games and break team down.

Dorgu is way better when bruno plays. He was absolutely okay today, but nothing special.

I think he's best when he's running at fast pace. I just feel when he has more time to think, he takes way too many touches.
