Patrick Dorgu | 2026/27 Performances

Dorgu has his uses but for a top team, you want a player with far better technique playing for you, especially in attack.
I agree, his interplay is often subpar and he's one of the players to lose the ball, then he's got physicality to play back to goal and keep the ball, it's just those one twos and first touch which he's poor at and and which doesnt sit well with the United way or how top teams want to play.

But maybe he surprises people, we just cant expect from him what he's not, technical player who can comfortably play out of tight spaces. We'd be so much better to have someone like Ndiaye from the left. Yet we are left with Marcus fecking Rashford.

Ji was a technically brilliant player.
Yep, do not understand that comparison at all
Park was technically way better

i never said Park wasnt technical. He joined when he was 24 whilst Dorgu is 21.

Dorgu has better goalscoring ability, has similair work rate ability, has the ability to play any side of the pitch from defensive to attack.

Ji Sung park excelled at throughballs and better first touch than Dorgu but Dorgu has the ability to match Parks's close quick touch passes and that's one of Dorgus main strengths.

Dorgu however doesn't have the creative ability that Park has so won't be able be played central.

I think Dorgu needs Bruno to bounce the ball literally at him as soon as he passes it - but it's worrying that he needs another player to get the best out of him.

I think its unfair to call him a squad player, i feel like I would never call Ji Sung Park a squad player because he was there when we had the biggest teams to play as a defensive specialist in an attacking position.

Dorgu is surprisingly good technically, he's not a Wan Bissaka type player.
Strange that you say that Van Bissaka had the best dribbling stats in the league before he came to us. There are simply different aspects to being "technical"

We literally have Cunha who's a better version of him in many aspects.

We do, but he's also not a LW, rather a SS, LAM who lacks top speed. He had some good games there but its still a small sample. explains why we would be after someone like Summerville who is superfast and good dribbler. Surely we will be after a player like this the next few transfer windows. CUnha comes back as a starter though

Which is a fair point. I'd caveat my point with he is surprisingly technical in tight spaces. Even in the PSG match he had a moment in their box in the second half where he had quick feet to keep the ball whilst being pressed. He's not a creative technical player but in tights spaces he does not stick out to me.

Nothing against him personally, but the more he plays the less likely we are to be successful. He waists the ball in the final third every single time.

This dude has tremendous upside. He will become a consistent, fantastic performer for us. All the things he needs to work can be learned!

It’s interesting you say that because I kind of feel the same but at the same time also feel like he’ll make more of an impact than most of the others. Massive contradiction but he’s got a goal or assist in him every game to me, but at the same time looks clumsy and a bit rubbish too.

Great squad option and still only a young lad so will no doubt improve too

Last season he had a better G/A ratio per minutes played than Mbeumo and Amad, and roughly the same as Cunha. He can improve, as you would expect from a 21 year old, but at his best he can be very effective.

There's no way that is true.

Not when Eden Hazard was still at Chelsea.

For all of the talk of us maybe buying a left back, I still see Dorgu as a left back.

He's not a winger to me at all.

The back half of last season we played as well as we had all year with him in the match. He makes things happen. Cunha is the man, and should start at LW, but I believe Carrick will have a plan for Dorgu to keep making an impact this season.

Yeah they aren’t similar at all. I guess the comparison is around role in the squad. The most similar former United player I can compare him to is Valencia, but I would say he was also a better footballer than Dorgu. I like him though. He’s got a great attitude.

The similarity for me is how their physical attributes can be used for specific tactical purposes. With Park it was his immense stamina which allowed him to do enormous work off the ball whilst also having the tactical intelligence to link play in possession, which was especially devastating on the counter when he had runners around him.

Dorgu is also very effective out of possession, with the strength, pace and stamina to get about and press in a way that most of our other forwards can’t/don’t. He has a different role in attack though, using his directness and pace to make runs and stretch play.

Well that’s where he’s played for most of his career, and it’s where he showed his best form at United. It’s odd to me that anyone assumes that’s not his most natural role.

No it isn't. For us the majority of his games up to now obviously came at wingback, and for Lecce he played as a fullback more than a winger.

I have no idea where this weird myth that he was mostly used as a winger comes from, yet random posters keep repeating it. It's easily disproven with a quick google search.

Simply not true.

Park was by far the better finisher. Both feet, head, clutch against the biggest opponents on the biggest stage.

I’m not even sure what you call quick touch passes but park was technically superior and more dynamic as a passer or receiver (especially in tight spaces).

On work rate. Playing the wings /wide midfield as a full back/wingback is simply less tasking than Parks regular assignment (Tracking the oppositions best creator, covering for CR7, participating in fast breaks without sacrificing quality/decision making).

Was looking forward to seeing more of him on the left wing but really not been impressed. Maybe he gets better with Bruno back in

This is preseason where players are still getting themselves into game shape. Dorgu isn't a technical player so he will stand out a bit more when he's still getting up to speed.

Also worth saying that his value is from bringing balance to the side and doing the dirtier work when we have our full team playing. He's not a winger that is the go to source but when we have Bruno and the rest in the team, Dorgu offers the workrate, physicality and getting into good positions.

I was once the leader of the Dorgu hate club but I've learned that I was too hasty in writing him off and I think some of you are doing the same. Let's judge him when the real games come.

If he continues to score from the LW position, he's such a good option to have in the side.

My feeling is once we get into serious competitive games, with fight for every square inch of grass, he will be consistently one of the better attacking players. He's been alright but will be better when less time to think on the ball. We've had it easy in preseason so far, have not faced a fit opponent yet.

Good instincts off the ball are showing already though. Both when we're attacking and defending, he seems to be taking right positions. I think he's a tactically smart player. Not a technical / aesthetically pleasing but him often losing the ball is overblown.

It's really interesting reading this thread... we need to focus on what Dorgu brings to the team and why this makes him a v v effective player.

He is athletic, strong, awkward, direct, disruptive and can be v v difficult to defend against. He has an attacking instinct and wants to score goals. His defensive experience helps us too.

He is not tidy and neat on the ball, but that's not his game and that's fine.

He compliments our team in my opinion, of course he has aspects to his game which he could improve and he needs to be a little more responsible at times, like Cunha in fact.

But his left-foot provides an important balance to our team.

He is a player who has his uses against teams who will dominate the ball as he is a hard worker. He should absolutely not be our second choice option for the left sided forward role. You need far more technique and finesse. Our attack will be severely blunted should Cunha get an injury. Which is why the position should've been one of the priorities this summer - ahead of left back for me.

Dorgu had a better G/A ration per minutes played last season than Amad and Mbeumo, on a par with Cunha. I don’t see that as “severely blunting”’our attack. Indeed, in some game he was the cutting edge which opened things up.

I don't understand this, what do some fans want? Don't spend too much in the transfer market, and watch other teams, or competitors clearly improve their squad.... and when we actually begin to get some form out of a player, who was one of the key successes to our massive improvement, some start to doubt him?

Dorgu is no left back to me.. he doesn't have the maturity nor responsibility in his game. And we should be ok with that. What he does provide is a very effective midfield and forward attacking instinct. He knows his place when further forward, because he needs a defense behind him.

He is a v important member of our squad. Who do we want, the next Roberto Carlos? Dennis Irwin? Ashley Cole? Evra? Because those players come around v v rarely.

You're gravely underrating him.

I think he is more capable technically than some give him credit for it’s just experience and composure that currently means he lacks consistency.

He is very instinctive for me and when he has multiple options you can see him assess then sometimes become indecisive. It was one of the reasons I saw him developing at full back as might have given him the time on the ball joining the attack later in phase play to develop composure.

Either way he is still young and has shown enough to persevere with beyond the base criticisms . Will be a valuable asset to the squad over the season Im sure.

Just saw him in a YouTube short of the clubs channel walking next to Sesko (which is good news btw) looking HUGE. almost as tall and significantly bigger than him. What a Beast he became since he joined us.

He's literally our generations park ji Sung.

You will see him in the biggest games

What he brings off the pitch is more important to managers than fans due to his inconsistent attacking ability.

If he's going to attack he's better on the right so he can cut in. It's not easy to make a winger play on the outer foot. It makes sense why Lecce and Denmark played him there.
I don’t remember Park scoring any wonder goals like Dorgu has, but those screamers aside Park is a much better player.

Thought he was decent yesterday. Good pressing that actually turned the ball over on a few occasions, shot early on, goal, good movement. He played a bit higher up than you would expect though, with Shaw quite on his own.

Dorgus role was changed for this game. He played a lot more central than usual almost being our 9 at times. This meant that he tracked less back leaving Shaw with too much to do. That did not work out well. it didn´t help much that Cunha was having a stinker as our 9. You saw it immediately in the first minute when Dorgu shot at goal. Dorgu did the run, but no one was arriving in the box to receive a cross. Cunha is not up to speed yet, and we need Sesko to do this part. I think Dorgu was our best attacking player yesterday, but he was probably only a 6.5 or 7 at most. The others up front were sub par.

Because of his physicality and willingness you could play him almost anywhere(maybe except CM) and he'd give you something.

You could even play him as a 9 and he'd somehow make things happen.

But we really should have tried him more at LB in pre season. Unless the club know for sure a new one is coming in.

Such an uninspiring LW. I just dont see it with him and come to think that we have not had an exciting LW since Giggs (and a young Rashford). Crazy

I see him as a good squad option to have for lw or rw, he's a poor lb and I'm glad we aren't playing him there

I think he should be starting nearly every match on the left.

I think Carrick prefers Dorgu because we gave a left back who can't run.

I'd like to see Dorgu play some more at left back, I don't think he's ever looked amazing there but also not bad and he has the physicality.

Except that Dorgu isn’t a natural defender. He’s a attacker at heart and his value would be lost attempting to shoehorn him into a position that is already occupied.

Not sure what a "natural" defender is. He's played left back plenty for us, never looked unwilling to work defensively and he has the ability to run.

Better than shoehorning a player who's body is shot. Hopefully we sign a left back but we have the start of the league in less than a week.

He never really stood out when he played there, in fact it happened during one of our worst stretches under Amorim. It wasn’t until Amorim used him more as an attacker followed by Carrick’s arrival when he actually began demonstrating value to the squad, which is why I don’t think he should be used at LB unless it’s an absolute emergency - especially given that we presently have Mazraoui, who is more than good enough to be available as a backup LB.
