Pep Guardiola | Leaving City: Official

Pep finally trained someone to beat him in the PL.

Did he though? It's taken Arteta almost 7 years + a lot of money. And the current City team is arguably Pep's worst since he came to the league 10 years ago.

It feels more like he's in a slump or possibly the beginning of his decline.

The low note of winning 2 cups?
But yes, a domestic treble would be a bit of a nightmare and ideal way to leave before the mess blows up behind him.

Leaving on a low note of 1 winning league cup after spending half a billion in 2 years.

That would be nice.

imho he was just waiting for City restructuring their staff/facilities/squad in advance, Bayern was a mere stop gap.

Although his stint was extremely entertaining and enjoyed by every Bayern fan I know.
Still annoyed we didn't get there before Bayern did

Feck off, City. Two years in a row without a title. The first time that has happened since Guardiola took over in 2016.

It means Guardiola will have won 6 titles in 10 seasons. Ferguson won 7 with United between 1993-2002, or over the course of ten seasons.

In his ten seasons at City, Guardiola has also taken a Champions League, 2 FA Cups (chance of one more to come), and 5 League Cups.

For comparison, Sir Alex won a Champions League and 3 FA Cups in that timeframe, and no League Cups. Note that the League Cup and squad sizes were different concepts back then, so it wasn't typical for top 4 PL teams to win the competition using their B teams, as it is now.

Honestly, I do try to be magnanimous in such comparisons and understand where people are coming from when they put Ferguson and Guardiola as equals, but considering Guardiola came to a City team that had already assembled a title-winning squad, had his Barcelona ecosystem transported to City in advance of him taking over, and has been able to squad build with cheat codes... Fergie really was something else.

I don't think anyone puts Peps time at City on a par with Sir Alex. More his entire body of work across his career. There's literally no argument he's been better than SAF in English football.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is quite often debated whether Guardiola or Ferguson are the best manager in PL history, and I have seen plenty of people give it to Pep. It's certainly become 'a debate' for some in recent years.

Then you get certain articles positing the qustion, which I suppose is fair enough:
https://www.premierleague.com/en/ne...ardiola-the-premier-leagues-best-manager-ever

In that article, Gary Lineker puts Guardiola as the best there, although in fairness the quote doesn't really clariy if it's just for his PL exploits, but the question has been asked plenty, I feel, so I was just giving my two cents.

It's like you are trying to pretend there's a debate going. There's no debate here, I am not sure Pep will ever match what Fergie did in premierleague.

He should probably stay at least 10 years and take over some team that's nowhere near financially potent as City and make them champions few times to make it even a debate.

Nothing wrong with giving your two cents. I'd have Sir Alex ahead of him in terms of English football and probably marginally ahead of him overall still too. I find the PL is always in a hurry to make the new thing the bestest hence why articles like that appear but I don't think theres any argument for Pep in just his time at City even though its been phenomenal. He'll leave as the leagues 2nd greatest manager imho, but a fair distance behind first.

He's got a contract until 2027. Think given that he pushed Arsenal like he did 2nd part of this season, he'll want one final try at title next season. Spend some more money and go for it again.

I've literally shown you just one example where it has been debated. I'm not pretending anything.

He won't quit without winning something big if its his choice I feel. He may leave for personal reasons but he will want to go out on a 'high' of PL and/or CL

It's a random article from last year, I am not sure it backtracked that much at all. Also I am not sure there's any sane person that thinks there's a debate, only some City and ABU journalists.

And what would it take to make an article 'not random,' pray tell? :)

I take your point

Didn’t he quit his hometown club the Summer after winning just the Copa del Rey?

Yeah. It I thought there were personal reasons as well? Maybe I am making that up/confusing things, but something like he was mentally wiped out

He has also been here for ages, so one hand could say he can leave anytime now and nobody would say a bad thing, but maybe his own ego would now push him for another year and finish on a high (hopefully not of course)

Why is everyone using this now that dick Neville used it? Danny Murphy, Nev, this fella, Shearer to name a few I think of what he used it since I heard it on Nevs, podcast thing.

The words "body of work" has been used forever to sum up a persons body of work. I haven't even heard Neville use it. It's an extremely common term for someone with a lot accomplished.

My gripe with it was the first I heard of it was from Neville and Scholes talking about Carrick. In the little segment he used it about 20 times. Stick to Football podcast it's called. Since then everyone is using it. Just bugged me a little mate.

Think Fergie's greatest honours were beating Real and Barca in European finals.

Out-thought Cruyff with Mike Phelan. Some doing.

Of course, the two CL finals we got blitzed, but Barca had the likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Bit of a shame they never locked horns over a domestic season.

He will be missed..

Their fitness coach who has worked with Pep for 15+ years, and goalkeeper coach are leaving. So it looks inevitable. Title race will be wide open next year if he goes, everyone will fancy it.

Hope so. Great coach but he sold what integrity he had for a mountain of gold from that rotten club.

Without him I expect they'll fall back into the pack at least.

But does the fact that Pep has been part of an illegal oil money driven project and has been part of a club that has blatantly cheated year after year not make his “achievements” practically null and void?

He is going nowhere. Same shit every year. New "envelope" under the table, 500m on new players and he will calm down.
And their fitness is shit in last 2 years. That homie is probably sacked.

I think he will go and be replaced by Maresca hence why there is little to no rumour mill regarding the latter.

It's kinda weird that hes had such a brilliant career but there's so much controversy around him all the time.

Barca paying off refs, look no further then that Arsenal, Chelsea game against them.

Bayern was the only legit team he managed and they still sacked him.

Coming in with the PL at its weakest and still cheating to win it.

There's question marks of over his times at Barca too (regardless of Xavi, Iniesta and Messi)

Absolutely, many allegations of steroid use. Pep is a good footballer coach once the rules don’t apply. Otherwise he’s a cheating bastard who will always carry a cloud over him because of his cheating.

Seems to have been an open secret for a while that he's going. It would be a bigger surprise if he stayed.

Suspect this will mark the beginning of an era where the title switches each year between a handful of clubs for a while. City will continue to massage their accounts for financial advantage, but I can't see them getting another Pep. I dont think there's one out there.

Bayern didn’t sack him. He let his contract run out to move to City.
