Pep Guardiola | Leaving City: Official

They did. 3.23bn in wages and player amortization from FY2019/20 to FY2024/25. Plus another big chunk for this season that we'll see when their next accounts are out.

Chelsea next on 3.1bn, Utd 2.95bn, Liverpool 2.85bn and Arsenal 2.44bn.

This actually more or less validates my point. They spend 5% (Chelsea) and 10% (Utd) more than the competition, but their throphy haul is 5-7 times that of the competion. So compared to what they spent, they simply far outperformed the competion.

Still, ofcourse, they should not have been allowed to spend what they spent, due to inflated sponsorship deals etc. I fully sympathize with that part of the argument. But you cannot discount their success by simply pointing to the cheating. They simply did way better on the transfermarket and on the pitch

Doesn't high salaries sort of come with a lot of succes though? Like salaries are often performance based, and since City has won so much their will be high. That list is much more damning for Chelsea and United I think.

No doubt about that. Even if you ignore bonus payments, City's haul is on a different level per pound spent to United and Chelsea.

If you take the wage numbers at face value, that is

Arsenal have won the least out of that list since 2019/20

Sweeping up League Cups and FA Cups is a bit easier when you effectively have two first XIs.
This. If your first 50m full back doesn't work out, just buy a second. Or a third. This is where their cheating really helped them.

Jack Gaughan: Those inside Manchester City’s training ground say Pep Guardiola is leaving this summer and made up his mind some weeks ago. They assume it is ‘a matter of days’ before official communication is made.
The answer from those inside the club’s training ground, who are with him every day, is that yes, he is heading off into the sunset and yes, he made up his mind about that some weeks ago. They have claimed any validity to murmurs and whispers around the Etihad’s corporate boxes at the midweek victory over Crystal Palace that Guardiola is readying himself for a dramatic U-turn is news to them.

They assume that it is a matter of days before the official communication is made on the biggest single shift at the club since the Catalan’s arrival a decade ago, with City set for a parade and lavish ‘after party’ at the Co-op Live next Monday. And they say significant changes to the backroom staff – beyond the departing coaches like Lorenzo Buenaventura and goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor – are coming.

He is considered Tier 1 for Manchester City news apparently.

Of course you bloody can.

What sort of argument is that? "Oh well ok they've been cheating for nearly 20 years but you shouldn't hold that against them".

Every success they've had since 2008 is down to their cheating, you can't just ignore it. It's the entire foundation of their club.

Yeah you can, it's basically why they were able to buy all the players they needed to be successful on the pitch.

So they're announcing he's leaving after they lose the league on Tuesday/Sunday or once they win the league on Sunday.

Or he's staying regardless of whether they win the league or not.

Glad we've been able to clear that up

I don't disagree with the second part. What I do disagree with though is the sentiment around Manchester City in certain threads on this forum, that their success is unavoidable/not impressive, because they spent so much money. If the above numbers are correct, their expenditure is about on par with Chelsea and Utd. So they cheated to get on level playing terms (and a little above) with the top teams in the competition, and they made a hell of a lot more of that position than any of their competitors. Which in itself is pretty impressive.

I severely dislike Man City, I have to add. Plastic club.

They are also clearly last on that list.
Yeah, but you mentioned Chelsea and United should be most worried. Chelsea have won the champions league, club World Cup, conference league in that time period. We’ve won the FA cup, EFL cup and reached the EL final.

Both clubs also generate a lot more global and commercial revenue than Arsenal. I’m not sure any club besides City should actually be worried, though.

We'll have to disagree then. I don't think anything they've done should be applauded.

They have spent almost 20 years cheating and cheating and cheating. Everything they've done has an asterix next to it. They're still cheating now, they claim to have higher revenue than Utd and Real Madrid, they can't fill out their own stadium. They moved the youth cup final to their tiny training ground and still couldn't fill it.

There is also absolutely zero chance their expenditure is honest and truthful. We already know Mancini was getting paid more than they said he was via being given some fake role as a consultant. You don't think Guardiola or their players are also getting paid extra off the books?

The numbers obviously aren't correct though. Theyve clearly been paying obscene amounts to individuals off the books. They have over 100 charges filed against them for feck sake. To be impressed by anything they've done is to turn a blind eye to their cheating. Their achievements are hollow and always will be to anyone who cares even a little bit about sporting integrity.

They're a stain on the PL, and if it wasn't for greedy fat fecks in suits wanting what all greedy fat fecks in suits want; more power and money, then city would have been thrown out the league a long time ago

I didn't mention anything about being worried. Big clubs spend big money, it's what it is. I'm also not sure that Chelsea has more global revenue than Arsenal. I'm just saying that based on that list, Chelsea and United has clearly the least return compared to how much they've spent.

Why would everyone make so much more money than what is reported, though? It's pretty much in line with what other good players makes in other clubs in England. Pep is already the highest paid manager in the Premier League by a huge marigin for example.

Feel the same as you do. And also some things are hard to investigate like their ties to their state sponsors. For example imagine a scenario where they want to sign play Y from club X that is also sponsored by the same "company", how would you go about proving that club X lowered their asking price for player Y because the sponsor promised to increase their sponsorship by 5% over the next 3 to 5 years for the favour.

So that they stay at the club or go there in the first place?

We know they paid Mancini under the table, you don't think they do for Guardiola?

Wakey wakey…. They have declared at least double the amount of profit they actually made.

They’d have us believe they spent 2m on Haaland and sold Sancho fir 150m

Hence the charges

Where have you been?

This logic only works if you believe that no one would want to play for City if they weren't paid a lot more than what they would have been paid at other clubs. I don't believe that to be true.

As for Guardiola, again he is the best paid manager in the league by a huge marigin as far as the reported salaries go. Mancini wasn't, in fact his official salary was very low. It makes sense that he was paid more. For example, if Haaland's base salary was reported to be 100k a week, that clearly would suggest he is paid more in some way as he would have been able to make a lot more at other places. His actual reported salary is around 600k a week I think, which makes him one of the best paid players in Europe (maybe only behind Mbappé). Why would there need to be massive other payouts?

So you think they cheated on an industrial level for years and then Guardiola arrived and they just decided ok no more cheating, we'll be honest now?

That's just the last six years. They've been at it since the takeover. If you have the money to to attract the best players season after season (and the best manager) you should be winning everything. You don't need to blow everyone out of the water if you have a track record of repeated success and the ability to pay the best wages, the top players want to come. You get first pick of whoever's moving every season. That's a massive massive advantage.

Without inflating their revenue they can't get those players. Which means they aren't winning leagues and going deep in the CL. So there's huge chunks of legitimate TV and prize money revenue they then miss out on. Which means even less money to buy players. At best they would be scrabbling around with the rest of us buying Mustafis and appointing ETHs. Or even worse bouncing around the Europa League places.

We'll never know exactly what their trophy haul looks like in the alternate universe where they played within the rules. But we can be sure they'd be at or near the bottom of that spending list rather than the top. So we can have a pretty good guess.

So you think they cheated on an industrial level for years and then Guardiola arrived and they just decided ok no more cheating, we'll be honest now?
You have to ask yourself why there were doing that though? Their revenue was like 125m during the year Mancini was appointed. The year before Guardiola was appointed, their reported revenue was about 400m. For 24/25 was their reported revenue was 700m.

It's pretty evident that based on reported revenue, they can now pay their players and staff accordingly, compared to all other clubs in the country, whereas in 2010 they just couldn't (for example, United were close to 300m already in 2010). They really don't need to pay under the table anymore.

If Pep is leaving this summer do we think the charges will finally be brought this summer then?

Or is a worrying story about the Fa letting clubs deal with their own breaches a bigger sign it's imminent...

One thing is for sure Maresca will struggle to get them anywhere near 85-90 points so they'll fall back more into the pack next few seasons regardless of what the 115 outcome is.

Also with Pep suddenly unloading CM and going with endless pacy wide players this season is a nod he is leaving shortly and next manager indicated they want to play with more width both sides.

What an odd, contradictory post. Well done for cheating… well?

What's the point of comparing City's self-reported spending bill to that of other clubs when we know for a fact that it's grossly falsified and they're infamous for paying extra under the table? For instance, they're on the record for spending £50m on Haaland, but it's common knowledge that they paid about the same amount on top to his agent and to his father in order to "secure the deal." It's senseless to use a club's financial records as basis for an argument when they're literally right now the subject of the biggest financial misconduct investigation in the history of sports. Lying about what they spend is the defining characteristic of their club. If they say they spent x, they probably spent twice that amount.

Will make sure I cancel Sky Sports if he does quit, they will be utterly nauseating about it.

Totally blind to the massive elephant in the room as per.

Usually the team that spends 5-10% more scoops up the vast majority of the trophies though. It's not like you have to spend 5 times more to be expected to win 5 times more trophies, you just have to outspend the competition to be expected to win all the trophies. Sure they did well in transfer market. But they should still be expected to win everything with the cheat money they spent.

That's not what said at all, is it
Of course it is. You’re effectively praising them for cheating impressively. When there’s no consequence for anything you do, due to your cheating, you can only hit home runs because everything else will be quietly disposed of until you get it right, which is what City do and why they have the advantages over everyone else that they do.

No I'm not. I said before they cheated. I will add now that, because they cheated, they should be stripped of any prices they won in the period they cheated. However, I stand by my point that the money they spent, a large part of it attained through cheating, was spent remarkably well, compared to peers like Chelsea and Utd.

Tell that to the Ajax board, who are able to spend more than any competitors in the Eredivisie (apart maybe from PSV in the last few years), but spectacularely fail to achieve anything for years on end;) although I fully appreciate the fact that that is 100% on the incompetence of the Ajax board

That's not at all the case. If it's only 5-10% more you'd expect them to win a bit more over a 10 year period maybe, but nothing much really. Besides, if we go by that list, the reason they're even ahead of Chelsea, for example, is only because they've won a lot (which triggers bonuses and so on).
