Like some kind of dystopian propaganda.

Yeah Barcelona with Messi, Xavi and Iniesta core.

Bayern with Kroos, Ribery, Robben, Lahm, Muller.

Then City with KDB, the Silvas and the rest of the basterds lot.

Yet only won 3 champions leagues till now, may win more if as usual gets to buy players with a country's GDP.

Everyone complained about Fergie not winning more, which is true but the times were different with the Europe ban due to Liverpool fans being the jackasses they are, and 3 foreign players.

However, now with sports science at an all time high, players being monitored for everything, a bigger group of player pool and yet at City he has won 1 champions league in 10 seasons.

Disgusting spitting jackass with an ego as big as a mountain. Could not even stop Arsenal from winning the league before fecking off.

May Man city get fecked in to the lower leagues.

TBF if anyone deserves one, it's Pep. Him and Sir Alex are the 2 best managers in history, and he's been at City for 10 years.
:o not in the same league as Fergie . If pep goes somewhere that’s not totally dominant in the league that are not an oil club.. maybe, just maybe he could be mentioned In the same breath as Fergie.

What he did at Aberdeen and then to stay somewhere for 26 years and consistently rebuild like he did and keep the same hunger and drive is otherworldly. I can’t believe so many in the media are saying pep is better and what’s he’s achieved at city is more impressive. I think it stems from United being so hated outside of their own fanbase, look how Bruno is getting the same treatment.

Sorry I’ve gone off on a tangent.

The media have got so used to taking the oil money and kickbacks that come with fawning over the oil clubs that they've forgotten what a true working class hero did with both Aberdeen and United.

Sir Alex turned us into what we are today and no rewriting of the cheats' history will eclipse that.

This whole thread feels more like a defense on Fergie (that he doesn't need) than a proper assessment on Guardiola's talent as a coach. It's a United forum, I get it, yet...

We can put rivalries aside to recognize greatness. It's ok. Pep is easily one of the best managers of all time. Sir Alex is top for us of course, but many would say Cruyff or Pep or maybe 1 or 2 other choices in that group.

Pep has influenced the sport more than any other in modern football history and was the manager for the best club side in football history in my opinion (Barca during his time).

This generation of fans would have missed a large chunk of Fergie's managerial career. These so called defenses would at least get a young fan reading to go look up and see how different United's rise under Fergie was and how different City's is.

There's no need to have a proper assessment of Pep's coaching, everyone knows his methods have been a revolution in football and he should definitely be proud of it.

Football is again going through a phase where set pieces, counter attacks and fast ball movement is coming back. Off tangent, just wish we bring 2 strikers up front again.

Pep for me, hasn't done anything spectacular post the 2008-2011 Barcelona reign when his teams dismantled everyone. Bayern were the best club in the German league, so was City.

He just brought shiny new toys at a whim to suit his style and put out quality players in the earlier rounds of the FA cup and the Carling cup and was winning it most of the time.

Hate to say it but Klopp at Dortmund and then coming to Liverpool and getting them their title and a cl win has a higher value than what Pep has done post Barcelona.

He biggest praise he can get is that he stopped Liverpool from winning more when Klopp had his team running on all cylinders.

He has been more than that, he did a great job at City, many others spent lots without not even competing later, sthg that he did season after season.
There is an excessive ammount of bash that I get being a Rival coach ina Rival forum, but damn I'm sure another song would be sing if he had coached United too.
I get the nature of this stuff, but at times, when someone is as greta as an Ancellotti, a Mou, Pep, Fergie, etc...we can like them more or less, but at times trashing them, it's silly and even quite cringe

I think there is a legitimate argument to make when discussing Pep’ career and achievements to suggest he’s had a lot of things go his way. Setting aside the rivalries I think you can make this argument even while saying he’s a great coach.

If you look at Sir Alex, Klopp and Arteta’s very first starting lineups for their clubs, to me it seems obvious that Pep got a much better deal in building his squad quickly and with infinite money. His very first Man City team had players like Silva, Augero, Kompany, Fernandinho, KdB, Sterling. Those are some world class players there (and a very good one like Sterling). As Jose said at the time City could then go out and spend 200 million on full backs alone.

By contrast, Klopp’s first 11 and what he built them to is just ridiculous and even as a United fan I have to give him credit for that. Sir Alex completely revamped United, especially the youth system and culture and that took time. Arteta, whatever you think about the football, likewise turned Arsenal around with some very shrewd decisions (luxury players like Ozil were dismissed, everything was centred on the team). I feel those managers really had to work hard to change things at their clubs and made some really important changes.

As I said, I feel City is just a bit artificial and the fact that they’re still under investigation with these charges and yet people are saying how amazing he is, it’s a bit fishy.

You’re probably right.

But you can’t take away the fact that Pep only coached teams that were by and large the richest in their countries with Bayern and City, nor deny that simply saying « all teams spend money » when City is literally on trial for financial cheating.

He is and will remain one of the greatest coach ever, but his City stint will always be tainted in the view of most neutral fans.

I think most people value more coaches that can build something, that’s why most people also downplay Ancelotti’s achievements but have way more respect for what Klopp or Arteta did, even though 99% of the Caf find them insufferable

The thing is, it’s quite difficult to assess Pep’s talent as a coach. So far, he has only worked in unique situations where his team was massively superior to everyone else in the country in terms of resources. It’s no wonder his league record is impressive.

Given the circumstances he has been in, his European record is not that good, and he has been found out a LOT of times in cup games. You need look no further than the 2024 FA Cup, which he lost to a United team that a lot of posters on this forum consider absolutely terrible (Onana, Rashford, Garnacho etc). I personally wouldn’t agree with that assessment, but it definitely was not a great United team.

In my view, Pep’s teams don’t handle adversity particularly well and don’t have a solid plan B. That’s because in most cases they don’t need a plan B due to the quality mismatch between their players and the rest of the league.

Hate to say it but Klopp at Dortmund and then coming to Liverpool and getting them their title and a cl win has a higher value than what Pep has done post Barcelona.
Completely agree.

Just on Pep, there is a narrative out there to make it look like almost a given and it isn't. Even his first moves in his first Barca were BOLD as fvck and pretty close to end badly. For instance as a personal taste, I preffer Luis Enrique's approach in Barca than Pep's (I'm really happy for Lucho and his PSG tenure), but it's undeniable that Pep is more than just a great or very good coach and that I won't bet a single dollar that any of the greatest coaches would have had the same suceess in his shoes. Also he CREATED many times the scenario from where he could command almost everything and gain such privildge by winning and with a very distinctive approach.

PD: As aside note, and maybe a subject of an entire new thread, NO ONE ever talks about what actually opened the gates to this filthy greedy current scenario.

When the Premier League was created, The Big Clubs, specially United, Liverpool, demanded full control over their own commercial rights, sponsorships, and broadcasting agreements without having to share them with the lower tiers. This GREED opened the door to current situation, so now? feck it, deal with it.
WORSE, United and cia DEMANDED to keep exclusive TV revenue, on retaining the lucrative television income for the top-flight clubs alone, abolishing the previous Football League rule that distributed gate receipts and broadcast money across all four divisions. I guess they thought that Money in the future would only come by TV, they didn't understand the consequences of the first demand.
SO now, to see some Huge clubs complain that much because some Oil fecker owners or such converted some Hood clubs into Powerhouses, cringes quite a bit.

Later we can discuss with those gates opened, how far some Clubs went, even into illegal shennanigans and if some are caught they'll have to deal with it.
Yet putting my hand on fire for any Club in EPL? no thank you and that all of these was born because of the GREED of trying to mantein an Status QUO by huge clubs, it's a very important issue that fans of huge clubs tend to forget or even at times, perhaps don't know and whta also translated in a lot of Succees in the field in the recent past.

It's pretty common with Huge personalities as coaches, that they at times fall in their tendencies to an extreme, I don't think Pep it's there alone at all.

What he accomplished at City is still extremely difficult. Sure he's had massive backing from a state-owned club but United and Chelsea were spending at comparable levels in the first part of his time at City and Liverpool eventually grew a wage bill that was also comparable to City's. And City has never really outspent PSG or Real Madrid once you start getting outside of the PL.

The extra resources compared to Liverpool and Arsenal probably got him a couple more leagues than he really deserved because they can make the difference in close title races, of which he won four. But even if he ended his time at City with four leagues and a CL instead of six leagues, it would have been an excellent run.

This is a period from 2017-2026 when nobody else except Klopp and Arteta has even been able to build a title challenging side. Its not that easy to do, even with tons and tons of resources.

Why are you pretending the cheats post genuine information regarding their spending and wages? When we already know their wages are bullshit ?

One of the best and most successful manager. Never built up a team without money or inheriting world class player. Most likely worked for clubs that cheated.

Meh, let the media have their fawning sessions.

Everyone celebrated Lance Armstrong until they didnt - the tide will turn as Pep just has too many skeletons and question marks against him. The hit pieces will come.

Most of the under the table payments seem to have been pre-Guardiola, according to all the charges and coverage. Mainly Guardiola benefited from their fake revenue streams allowing them to pay above the table by that point.

United and Chelsea had roughly comparable wage bills and transfer spending for the first five years or so of his time at City.

Mainly Guardiola benefited from their fake revenue streams allowing them to pay above the table by that point. once again you’re making the absolutely insanely naive mistake of believing City suddenly went all aboard above board. Take that Harland deal for example, there is absolutely no question that we have no real idea of the cost of that deal City.

Once again you’re making the absolutely insanely naive assumption of believing City suddenly stopped cheating.
Take that Haaland deal for example, there is absolutely no question that we have no real idea of the cost of that deal City, just as we have no idea what it has cost City to keep Guardiola at the club for 10 years.

Can a club even have under the table payments to other clubs? They wouldn't be able to spend that money, right?

No doubt about wages though
There must have been something going on looking at the transfer fees they have paid on multiple occasions - some outrageous bargains they somehow managed.

I’m sure they can find ways around it, but I was thinking more about payments to agents, players signing on fees and those double wages.

It’s also massively cheating when you can pay a one time lump sum for a player and thus get them much cheaper than regular football clubs that have to pay over instalment plans. If United wanted an 80 pound player, we’d likely wanna spread the payment over 5 years.
City can likely buy the same player for 60m with a lump sum.
City don’t follow any rules at all, they inflate their income and they use a bottomless pit of oil money to cheat at every level.

And even those charges relate to payments made to Mancini, which is a lot easier to do as you can invent consultation fees for (non-existent) work done for other clubs in the City Group (which is what they’ve been accused of.

There’s no evidence that City aren’t reporting their transfer fees and wages accurately. Fraud with their fees would require every team they buy from to be accomplices. And they actually report incredibly high wages and payments to agents.

What they been charged with lying about is their income, not their expenditure.

There must have been something going on looking at the transfer fees they have paid on multiple occasions - some outrageous bargains they somehow managed.
Not really. Haaland is always brought up, but he had a release clause, they offered him giant wages as well as huge payments to his agents and family.

This is a bit of a big bear of mine because Arteta is often criticised because his net spend is significantly higher than City’s during his tenure. But City have been able to sell well in recent years because of having previously stockpiled talent bought with funds of dubious provenance.

Even leaving that aside, during the last seven years, City have spent a BILLION more than Arsenal in wages and agents fees.

It’s mental. Guardiola still deserves credit because, as others have mentioned, just spending money doesn’t equal success. But it is a seriously tilted playing field.

Pep is a very intelligent and great manager. He is jumping ship at the perfect time. City are in decline, haven't won the league in a few seasons, other clubs gaining with momentum, recent 5 defeats in a row, pending 115 charges. He is leaving before the ship sinks, it's now someone else's problem. He leaves with a great record and reputation intact no matter the outcome, clever.
If he left last year that would make more sense. I think with signings they've made last summer and this January they would've challenged again next season under Pep and imo beat Arsenal for title. You mention 115 charges but it's been going on for so long honestly I don't think nothing major will happen about that.

Yeah Barcelona with Messi, Xavi and Iniesta core.

It's not like United under Fergie did not spend because we did but never to this extent. I think it was in post-Fergie era that we spent money from sale of Ronaldo. That 2009-2012 period Fergie did not strenghten us properly and think it's why we were so poor after he retired. No value in market etc.

I don't like to see Liverpool winning even League Cup let alone bigger stuff but big respect for Klopp on his achievements. Thankfully it was only 1 league and 1 CL, but even though he certainly did spend don't think it was outrageous money.

Pep is great manager and saved us from few more Liverpool and Arsenal titles. One of the best ever no doubt. On bolded part: I have to say I don't agree. Surely very best managers will have huge egos and that's partly what drives them but he's been respecful most of the times imo. It's more about being 10 years at a club with all these charges that tarnishes his legacy.

I know this being a United forum, many hate Guardiola but truth be told he is the second greatest premier league manager after Ferguson. But interms of influence on style of play, he is no. 1 for better or worse (imo worse).

Why i consider Ferguson the greatest is his ability to win titles with weaker teams, his rebuilding of atleast 3 squads and his overcoming of sugardady clubs i.e Chelsea and than City when he was here and without spending a fortune. No manager apart from Ferguson could have won the 2013 title. Plus, no one comes close to Ferguson's aura, the respect he demanded, his man management and his hunger for success.

In 2006-2013 period he won 5 titles. Was 1 point and GD difference away from him winning all 7 titles available in that period. And that was all after many questioned in mid 2000s if he could compete with Mourinho Wenger etc. Wenger never won it again and he beat Mourinho for it in 2007 when everyone thought Chelsea would just retain the title again that season.

For me best thing about Fergie is his longevity. You can't stay at club for 27 years and leave in best possible way with another title. He did. Also Aberdeen success was such a long time ago that it's overlooked sometimes but that was amazing as well.

I agree with you Pep is no 1 in terms of his influence etc. Think this thread should be about Pep and not comparing him and Fergie.

SAF was 2 pts away from winning the first 9 PL titles.

Thank feck Pep is leaving, his football has been a blight on the game for too long.

Add that 1991/92 season. First before playing 4 games in space of 6 days, 5 in space of 10 days in April. Leeds had 3 games in 8 days.

Guardiola is a great coach, but the amount of money spent by him in his first 2 seasons at City and for him in the preceding season is crazy when totalled up.

Between 2015 and 2018, Manchester City were the biggest spenders in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons, spending over £600m, worth roughly £900m in today's money, at a time when no other club had ever sustained that level of outlay across multiple windows, and when they may have been doing so while disguising owner funding as commercial income to avoid the FFP rules everyone else had to follow.

But the “big clubs” when the premier league launched, other than United who hadn’t won a league title for 26 years, took ages to win their first league titles. Liverpool didn’t win until 2020, Arsenal 1998, and both had periods of mid table mediocrity. This idea that they alone profited is not true.

It sounds like a case of shifting the goal posts to justify City’s success by saying the old clubs had it good too but it doesn’t really add up. Things changed for English football with Chelsea in 04, and City are a continuation of that.

So basicly in some aspects a similar situation, the best Manager, took the advantage of such situation, with the addition of already being the biggest Club in the League. I'm not implying that it's that simple, just playing the same extreme game many here play.

To think that with the same amount of money given to Mancini, or Simeone, City or whatever team Pep had would have played similar and have the same succeess, it's very improbable.

And I didn't mean to move posts, I was pointing that the creation of the Premier League, was quite a greedy affair to mantein the Status Quo of that time forcing such rules that created later an scenario where in the long run they ended perjudicated.

If even prior to the EPL smaller clubs complained, after the EPL it was beyond worse and also those clubs were rightfully pissed, more the lower level championships, yet they didn't had the Power to raise their voice to the max. There is quite a level of hipocrisy going on regarding priviledges when big/huge clubs complain at times, or the "they don't have/had history" etc...the smaller, even hood clubs, couldn''t (or better said, had it extremely hard) to have any history of succeess in the way they were treated, mostly simply as feeders.

This like I've said before, excludes City for being punished if they are found guilty? nah, of course not, but to overreact to the point of made evrything about the 115 charges? it's too much of an stretch, more given how United and the vast majority of huge and biggest Clubs in the entire world, normally manages themselves regarding the rest of their Leagues.

Liverpool were the biggest club in the league at the start in 1992 . They had 18 league titles, United had 7. They had 3 European Cups, United had 1. United had not won the league for 27 years, Liverpool won it only two years prior.

Took credit for a style invented by Cruyff, never did anything to the level of Ferguson with Aberdeen or even Mourinho with Porto. His entire career was built on a squad created by Rijkaard.

I won't go as far to say he's a "bad manager", he's not; but he's never faced any real tests as a manager and is one of the most guilty cheque book managers in the game. In no way does he ever deserved to be considered "one of the greats of the game" in my opinion, as I don't think any manager in history has had the deck stacked so far in their favor as him with every team he's managed.

The fawning in the media is quite frankly embarrassing.
