Pep Guardiola | Leaving City: Official

I still think Guardiola is the best, and I’m quite sure Klopp would have won less with City in his place, but I also think it likely that Guardiola would have done less with Liverpool than Klopp did.

I recon Klopp would've won more than 1 Champions League in 10 years at City, he got Liverpool to the final on his first attempt after inheriting a much worse squad and much more limited transfer budget than Pep inherited then won it with them the following season

Maybe, maybe not. There is such a thing as club culture and tournaments, and Liverpool has an advantage there over City in regards to City. I’m not convinced.

With Pep and city its tempting to suggest this has always been planned as part of his wages
And people wonder how they can get basically any player they want, and players never leave them unless they want rid. They offer all kinds of secondary "rewards" which are technically not part of the contract, and so don't count towards the club's expenses. They paid Haaland's father and his agent as much as the transfer fee itself was. They're giving Pep a lifetime pension for some symbolic ambassador role. There have been reports of players being given newly-built properties in Abu Dhabi. Whenever anybody points to City's self-reported financial records and argue that they haven't spent that much more than other big clubs, keep in mind that they've been using every trick in the book to falsify those figures.

In fairness, the Haaland fees where just Raiola being clever

This is why I think Haaland is naive to believe he can just go to Real Madrid in a year or two time. Whilst he is banging then in for fun the club will not let him go. They will only let him go if he becomes surplus to requirements and being that I don't think there's a better no9 than him around (bar Kane) then that won't happen

Regarding guardiola vs klopp, imo benitez at Chelsea, inter and real, juande ramos at real, pochotino at psg and Chelsea, emery at arsenal and psg, Pellegrini at real and city, ranieri at Chelsea and juventus, villas boas at Chelsea, ten hag at united, amorim at united, alonso at real , koeman at barca and perhaps there are others strongly suggests that having big money does not guarantee managers that did well clubs with less money success there.

It wouldnt surprise me if Haaland have a few clauses in his contract. His father loves money and is a knobhead, but they’ve been very clever about contracts. I’d easily expect that they have a few exit doors lined up, and quite hefty bonuses for staying on. Daddy Haaland moved to Switzerland a few years ago for tax purposes (and probably related to his sons companies)

Ha ha, almost certainly been promised all along, probably a lifetime 10m /year role.
Yes, that is probably how he will 'work off' his 2nd year salary of the 2 year contract he is just (apparently) walking away from; the second years salary being converted into a 10 year retainer fee...nice one!

Yeah Barcelona with Messi, Xavi and Iniesta core.

Bayern with Kroos, Ribery, Robben, Lahm, Muller.

Then City with KDB, the Silvas and the rest of the basterds lot.

Yet only won 3 champions leagues till now, may win more if as usual gets to buy players with a country's GDP.

Everyone complained about Fergie not winning more, which is true but the times were different with the Europe ban due to Liverpool fans being the jackasses they are, and 3 foreign players.

However, now with sports science at an all time high, players being monitored for everything, a bigger group of player pool and yet at City he has won 1 champions league in 10 seasons.

Disgusting spitting jackass with an ego as big as a mountain. Could not even stop Arsenal from winning the league before fecking off.

May Man city get fecked in to the lower leagues.

Don't forget the unlimited bench with 5 subs and being able to change half your team every game, meaning they've been able stack their squads so everyone gets fair game time and appearance money to keep them all happy.

Advisory role I can see how that might go for Pep.

“Basically what you do is have unlimited funds to buy any player in the world that you want, pay them an obscene amount of money so they will come to you, break the rules and cheat financially, it doesn’t matter if you are caught and get 115 charges against you, just buy our way out of it, that should work but if it doesn’t then have the players take steroids, it worked for me in Barca”

Ah yes, cause City are famous for not letting players who want to leave, leave. Boateng, Sane, Julian Alvarez etc...

Haaland even in his first City contract had a minimum fee release clause. He chose to sign a 9 year deal with special "break" conditions after that. Likely related to the charges but also failure of the club to hit on ptich targets. If Erling wants to leave there's no way City stand in his way as long as the required fee is met. They haven't for a single other player.

In 2006-2013 period he won 5 titles. Was 1 point and GD difference away from him winning all 7 titles available in that period. And that was all after many questioned in mid 2000s if he could compete with Mourinho Wenger etc. Wenger never won it again and he beat Mourinho for it in 2007 when everyone thought Chelsea would just retain the title again that season.

For me best thing about Fergie is his longevity. You can't stay at club for 27 years and leave in best possible way with another title. He did. Also Aberdeen success was such a long time ago that it's overlooked sometimes but that was amazing as well.

I agree with you Pep is no 1 in terms of his influence etc. Think this thread should be about Pep and not comparing him and Fergie.
Comparisons with ferguson are inevitable just like every Cristiano thread will inevitably become a Ronaldo vs Messi thread. Just like Messi in world football, Ferguson is the yard stick for premier league managers.

We can put rivalries aside to recognize greatness. It's ok. Pep is easily one of the best managers of all time. Sir Alex is top for us of course, but many would say Cruyff or Pep or maybe 1 or 2 other choices in that group.

Pep has influenced the sport more than any other in modern football history and was the manager for the best club side in football history in my opinion (Barca during his time).
Oh absoloutly and I’ll sing wengers praises for his time at Arsenal all day long, for example.

But I just don’t feel the same way about pep but as I said previously, if he goes somewhere with less resources and makes them great, I’d probably feel differently about him. Just my opinion of course, which is what this forum is all about.

No, because at United, if we make a dud signing, we're stuck with it. At City he could just stick them on the bench and spend another 300 million next window without having to even think about it.

He needs that blank cheque cheat code to win. Not to mention if he was here over the last decade, he'd have to work under that useless git Woodward, rather than having the luxury of working under his Barca buddies like he did at City.

He'd have absolutely failed here.
Think this is the biggest point for me, any other club makes a big signing on big wages and that player ends up a flop, they're stuck with that player for years unless they sell at a massive loss. City meanwhile were just always able to pawn off their flops immediately either with some dodgy inflated deal or with little care for losses. They're seemingly the only club that bad signing have no affect on.

"Technical advice" what does that even mean?

In reality I bet he never works another day for his City overlords, they just want to make it look like he is still invested in things.

Daily Mail were running a story about him already moving out of his Manchester apartment. They haven't even played their last game yet!

He’s definitely got shares in City Group and probably had his ambassadorial role laid out years ago.

Until the final result of the charges issue is known Pep, despite his obvious outstanding football coaching skills and tactics, will always have the 'unfair' or 'asterisk tag' looming over his tenure as Man City Manager.

Also leaving with (an assumed) 1 year left on his latest contract and apparently his leaving his flat before the last match, is a little like 'shaking the dust from his feet' ...not a good look!!

Only thing I like is his stand with humanitarian causes.
Still not better than Sir Alex.

NBCSports all over themselves about how great Pep is, the greatest manager ever, blah blah. No mention of the charges, of working for a state with dubious marks, of the doping scandals, of his checkbook need for success, so forth.

Was just about to post about this....it's awful. Just switched over to Sports Center to take a break. The glossing over of the charges and the ownership checkbook kills me.

When you choose to make yourself the face of a sportswashing enterprise aimed at covering up grotesque human rights abuses, you effectively declare that you endorse those human rights abuses. One cannot just divest oneself of that. If I choose to launder money for the mafia, I also cannot simultaneously have sympathy for the victims of organized crime. If I choose to provide a web service aimed at hosting illegal porn, I cannot simultaneously claim to be against illegal porn. When you choose to manage - and subsequently be ambassador for - a club that is nothing but a sportswashing vehicle for a murderous Arab regime that oppresses women, executes homosexuals and so on, then you are de-facto supporting those ideals and very much helping the perpetrators continue to do it. That isn't even really up for debate. It's a self-evident fact.

Setting all of that aside, I will never consider him one of the absolute greatest unless he shows that he can win without a huge material advantage. He has only managed Barcelona when he took over the best team in the history of the sport (and quite possibly doped), Bayern where it was a total one-horse race, and City while they engaged in completely unprecedented levels of financial cheating. I don't think his teams have ever been more than the sum of their parts, which is why he falters in the CL when he's up against the best of other leagues. He only excels when the tools at his disposal are far better than the competition's. And I don't think he ever will take on a real challenge. We'll never see him elevate a smaller club, because I don't believe he has the skills to do that. He just has the ability to land jobs that grant automatic easy success.
