Pep Guardiola | Leaving City: Official

Will be interesting to see how he will do with Italy. He won’t have anywhere near the best team unless a miracle happens in the next four years. He can’t buy his way out of trouble. It will be the first time in his career where he is coaching the underdogs.

They're actually going to be paying big bucks?

England should be all over this; if he revolutionises Italian football before England stop with the blind faith, it’ll be a travesty.

Who was the last great club manager to also be a great international manager? I think they’re very different things personally. You don’t need to overthink a World Cup, it’s a short summer camp knock out tournament, you need vibes and good in game management. Both Spain & Argentina’s managers were non-entities at club level, Spain’s was their under -17 boss, a bit like Southgate was….

Pep won’t have enough time to implement his style and then overthink the selections. His cup management has actually always been a bit iffy (when he’s not winning the League Cup with a squad of £70m internationals)

I think Jose’s probably slightly more suited to it, but then he’s way more likely to do what Tuchel’s done, then blame his players for it, implore and ruin the vibes

Mancini is probably the closest. Would not call him great like Klopp or Pep, but he did win the league with City and Inter. Ok, the Inter league wins were when half his rivals got punished for cheating, but is probably one of few who has done well in both club and international. Conte wasn’t bad for Italy too.

Lippi and Del Bosque ?

Didn't Pep say he wanted to manage the Dutch in the past? Would be good for them to have a foreign coach for a change ...perhaps.
Why would they go for him, though, if they can appoint the best manager there is, right @KirkDuyt ?

I think he will take a prolonged break like Klopp before getting back into it, seemed to be burnt out at the end of his City reign.

I don’t think they have the players for his style, nevermind the amount of time on the training ground for it to work, but it’d be interesting to see him truly challenged.

Not sure. He’s a proud Catalan.
He played for Spain NT so not impossible he'd be willing to manage them as well. o

Have to say there could be brilliant set of managers on EURO 2028 and possibly 2030 World Cup. France with Zidane, Germany with Klopp, England with Tuchel*, Pep with Italy, Brazil with Ancelotti... only few years ago all those managers were at big European clubs and they all won at least one Champions League. Also can see Mourinho managing Portugal at 2030 World Cup, can't see him lasting at Real Madrid 4 years as he never stayed that long anywhere.

*Tuchel damaged his reputation in the semis but is still established, big name and did win England their second ever medal on WC and first on foreign soil.

Enrique?

This is a thing now?

It's not the Olympics you know..

Tuchel 2028 will end in similar tears. You only have to see his big game history with PSG and Bayern.

Will be considered a thing given they were literally handed a medal and had it round their neck.

Think it always was, just that big footballing nations don't appreciate it much. Šuker of Croatia said something about it recently, Croatia won 2 bronze medals and were buzzing about it, as well about 2nd place and silver medal in 2018.

How many English/Italian players has he signed over the last decade at City? I'd take that as an outright indicator of the appetite he could have for either role. I.e. none.

It just hit me he gave them an entire fecking decade

Absolutely. How can the FA not be thinking about swooping in?
Probably because he got cold feet on them in 2024, also the fact they gave Tuchel a contract to 2028. Personally I'm quite gutted but you got admire Italy after no World Cup going for the best out there.

The Italian link makes sense. He talked about wanting to manage in Italy a while ago, and he still has a great affinity for Brescia, I believe, from when he played there.

Managing Italy scratches that itch, somewhat

Would be the first job he's taken, where he wasn't assured of an amazing squad or the ability to create one. I don't see it happening.

There's no chance he's taking the Italy job, he won't want to risk his reputation as one of the all time greats with an average national team.

My guess is that this has come out as news to gauge whether Spain would be interested in him if de la Fuente has felt he's done all he can in the role.

Lippi and Del Bosque ?

Lippi is a great shout, but also you could say it was when Italy had a very fixed footballing national identity and he was already a top proponent of it. Very different to buying a guy with an entirely different ethos and trying to make it work in 12 games a year.
