Pep's spending is insane (£941m and counting at City)

If the Mahrez rumours turn out to be true he will have spent £500m since taking charge at City 19 months ago.

Yet the media will portray him as some footballing genius.

If Mourinho had spent such an amount I can only imagine the sorts of stuff that would be being written.

Any journalists on here?

Potentially 8 players (with Mahrez and Laporte) costing over £50m on their first XI. United have 3 in their history. Chelsea 2. Liverpool 1. Arsenal 2 soon.

Hasn't he now outspent Jose despite starting his career much later and even took a year off? Added into the fact Barca had 5/6 youth products that were the core of his side?

Why did they pull out of the Sanchez deal then? United are portrayed as the money team and City are the moral team. Imagine Pep didn't have Aguero or Silva when he came in. That figure would be closer to a billion. This just proves to me he can't win without having an unlimited budget at his disposal. It's that simple. Otherwise Pep wouldn't have gone to Man City.

Well...it's a bit egregious. But it is also clear that the owners want to became the biggest club and win it all both domestically and in Europe. And they believe in Pep. He's doing his outmost to fulfill this vision. I prefer that to some other owners who seem to be in it to make money rather than win trophies.

Hes a brilliant manager but his spending is ridiculous.

Then again if its there to spend he should spend it. Only gripes are the moral high ground when it comes to sanchez and not enough critism from the media regarding how much city have spent under him.

Yes, I think he's spent more money than any other manager in the history of football and barely played youth since taking over at City yet people don't point to actual facts and still say Mourinho spends more and ruins young players.

They may not say it, but all this is because they really see the Quadruple attainable this season as per Big Head's prophecy. Think about it from their point of view - league's all but won, in the finals of league cup, favorites in FA Cup and as for the CL - Real and Bayern are weaker this season which only leaves PSG, Barca and Juve for them to somehow overtake.

Any team in their position would fancy their chances, so they are going bonkers in the transfer market.

The ultimate chequebook manager, the king.

Anyone got his entire career spend compared to other managers?

Poor chap. Imagine if City weren't so restrictive. Must be nice to have a player out for 6 weeks and spend 60m on a replacement. We missed a trick when Pogba was out.

Cannot blame a manager for spending money, when the money is there. At the end, the manager is judged by the number (and importance) of trophies and the quality of football.

Playing the victim that they can't compete cause of money, and making that show withdrawal for Sanchez, while they spend twice as much as any other team in the other side, is somewhere between ridiculous and morally dishonest. The medial portrayal of big bad money United vs little no-money City is the most cringeworthy thing in recent football.

He’s a a cheque book manager, plain and simple who has never and will never put himself in a position where he has to show his worth as a manager. As soon as this City side start to decline and he can’t motivate them anymore, he’ll go running to the next cheat mode project. I can’t bring myself to rate him.

I mean... he is.

But this thread is to bash the media narrative of Pep being a tight-wad who starts 6 youth players, so carry on.

What's Ballbag saying now..

Poor old city being undermined by big bad United! I mean I get City's PR team trying to spin that line, nut the media to buy it hook line and sinker is just astonishing.. :houllier:

Looks like the article in the morning about City trying to get signings done before FFP 2.0 was just a taster for the big Mahrez bid to follow..

them splashing out yet another 50 million this season on laporte was laughable, now it's a complete joke with them bidding over 50 million again for mahrez, pep has put himself in a position where he basically has to win the treble to truly meet the expectations of his pathetic spending this season.

gotta laugh at how man city tried to act like they was taking the moral high ground over sanchez but are once again asking for 100+ million from their sugar daddy owners who have a poor human rights record, what a noble club they are lol.

He's hardly going to refuse the Abu Dhabi money, added to that they've been wanting to get him in for 5 years to start building this all conquering dynasty, it's hardly surprising that it appeals to him.
I honestly think he's going to be there a while if the money is any indicator, they've increased the spending substantially he's their man and they're going to back him to the hilt. He builds this and he'll have left a mark and the possibility of being regarded as the best of all time irrespective of any taint associated by the means.

Several decades from now nobody will care about that, it's why things such as the ' Liverpool way ' are obsolete, the history and tradition associated didn't come cheap the only difference being when we spent in the 80s it was through our own means.

The only clubs capable of competing with them are United because of the sheer finances they generate by themselves and Chelsea if Ambramovic fancies it but I doubt that given they've just had a decade where they've won everything in football.

If it wasn't Pep it would be another manager of similar stature and ability.

That's not really the point though. Fine if he wants to spend money. Don't go bleating to the press as some kind of moral crusader when other teams spend big to try and keep up with a state owned club, the hypocritical prick.

Show me a non-hypocritical manager in football today.

Man City lost face with the Sanchez deal, and came up with some guff. And acted contrary to that guff. Storm in a tea cup.

He did nothing genius for Bayern, and the only impressive thing he has done at City is to spend more money in 19 months than Sir Alex did in his entire career.

He is a top coach, but I genuinely think that any top manager with his backing would have got the same number of trophies he did.

All Pep does is spend. Dunno where this reputation for being a youth expert came from. Pedro is about the only player he's ever produced.

Yet to see the bald cnut get any criticism. He's such a media darling
