Phallon Tullis-Joyce | Signs a new contract until 2028

I take it we haven't missed Earps too much then? (Genuinely curious, haven't followed the women as much this season, due to general apathy towards football as a result of the men's failings...)

Absolutely not. PTJ has been better than Earps was last season (and this season at PSG).

Phallon has been having a really good season, couldn't have gone better really. Good scouting by us, even though she didn't come cheap (by women's football standards). Rated by her teammates and our goalkeeping coach as well.

She's even at home in Manchester - she's talked about some of the places round the area where she goes scuba diving and fossil hunting in her free time. Unusual footballer.

Agree with the above, not missed Earps at all. The goalkeeper stats for the WSL have her leading, and have all season, by quite a margin.

Not even a little bit.

You could say the marketing department might have missed Earps' profile. But on the pitch we've arguably upgraded.

Earps was an excellent keeper for us, although not as convincing last season. However, I do believe that PTJ is an upgrade. As for marketability, Phallon seems to be much more of a humble, even introverted character. I like that about her. It's a bit like comparing Schmeichel with van der Sar.

Now would be a perfect time for you to check out your women's team -- you just might find yourself hooked!

@Lobster11 Genuine question. Are your goalkeepers so good that Phallon does not get a look-in? Since Naeher retired I thought she would be up there.

It's funny: Phall was flying under the radar for a long time in the NWSL, and evidently United recognized her potential before the USWNT. We've got some other solid (post-Naeher) keepers, but now that Phall is on Emma Hayes' radar I predict she'll be the starter before the next World Cup.

Thank you. That's reassuring. She deserves to be on the big stage. Excellent use of the possessive apostrophe by the way!

Thanks for noticing that. Punctuation matters!

Come to think of it, I should note that the quality of writing in posts here at the Red Cafe -- at least here in the women's-team forum, which is the only part of the site I use -- is generally very good. The only other online forum I belong to, which is based in the U.S., often makes me weep for the future of the English language.

You still can't spell 'colour" though ;) but this is way off topic. I do hope Phallon becomes the US number 1.

Our being "two countries separated by a common language" might mean that we disagree about some spellings, but I think we're pretty much on the same page when it comes to grammar and punctuation.

I love how she acknowledges her saves but continually references the defenders. She is a star.

PTJ is one of three keepers named by Emma Hayes for the upcoming USWNT camp and friendlies against Brazil. I'll be surprised (and disappointed) if she doesn't get her first cap.

Well there you go ... first start for her tonight :)

Hope she shows us her best.

Another player (who you've probably never heard of) to watch out for: Ally Sentnor.
You are right, I've never heard of Ally Sentnor! 1-0 Rodman. Come on, Phallon, show them what you can do.

Note that the goal by 22-year-old Trinity Rodman was assisted by the 20-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Ally Sentnor (#9) is 21.

Bummer. If I were you I'd just wait and watch a replay tomorrow.
The stats tell me that Phallon has made three saves so far - two diving ones from inside the box and one save from outside. Good ones, or standard?

I just watched a highlights video this morning to remind myself. I'd say that she made two difficult saves and one spectacular one. Throughout she looked every bit as confident and calm as she's looked for United.

Apart from PTJ, the clear standout players IMO were 17-year-old Lily Yohannes, 20-year-old Alyssa Thompson, and the 22-year-old "veteran" Trinity Rodman.

I've just watched the highlights. Phallon did well - one excellent save, and her demeanour was exactly the same as at United. Calm, confident, in control.

I like the look of that Thompson. She was perhaps fortunate to get the penalty decision, but should have had one later (dragged down, got a shot away, excellent save)

The double-save was amazing, of course, but my favorite part was the rare display of emotion we saw from her immediately afterwards!

Fair play to de Gea - he was actually the only player from the men's team that I used to see at the women's matches.

These Kick Back video clips are really good. There are interviews with Jansson, Le Tissier, Rabjohn, Mannion and Keira Barry too, if you feel like posting them. There's also a compilation that includes interviews with Hojlund and Dalot about the women's team.

There's also one with Calum Best, who is Chairman of Dorking Women. It's interesting.

Glad I have a VPN as some of these vids were geo-blocked in the U.S.

My takeaway from the bunch is that PTJ evidently is a cool-headed, calming presence on the pitch; is incredibly athletic; is always willing to put in extra work; and is adored by her teammates.

Can we keep her, pleeeeeeeeease?

I totally agree. Can we keep her? The club need to do everything in their power to keep PTJ, and the entire squad - without exception. Strengthen the depth, of course, but this team is special.
