It's only a surprise if you've been kidding yourself that he's been really good this season.

Imo he was our worst player today and I don't know how he's got off so lightly. Stupid fpr the penalty, gave the ball away for fun and looked nervous throughout

Dreadful and he actually cost us the match, like you said the headlines were stolen by Zlatan.

I like Jones. But he should have stayed on his feet and looked rattled after the penalty.

Still think he's our best CB when fully fit.
Not having a go at you but if that is true shouldn't that mean we need a top class defender in the summer?

It was bloody Bournemouth, that's why!! This was the right game to start him and get him playing again. How can anyone argue that with the schedule we have coming up?

Train wreck performance. Rusty after coming back from injury, yes. Seems to be not matchfit. Playing like he's trying to play with an injury. When it rains it pours, the whole team collapse everywhere.

Should be shown the door along with Smalling.
This is the spirit..
Two of the best English CB and we need home grown players..

Smalling has been good and Jones has been very solid this season.
He made a mistake and was poor that goes for many of our players today..
Even for that penalty we should have won easily..

Yes but my issue was why did the manager throw him right back into the starting eleven, it's not the first time he's done this and usually the player returning has a poor game as a result.
if we ease him slowly to first team then he'll never play

Mourinho doesn't seem to give players minutes with the u21s to regain match fitness so this was the best opportunity for Jones to get game time.

I don't agree, there's no reason why another player couldn't have started today and then Jones came on for the last 30-35 minutes or so to get him match fitness, he didn't have to start the game.

What's the point? Just get someone decent that can stay uninjured

I don't expect him to give him minutes for the U21's but he could have given him half an hour or so as a sub today, rather than chucking him in from the start.

He's performed well this season.
He's performed ok in a handful of games. I've yet to see our defence really look good though. We rarely don't look like conceding when the defence actually gets worked. See today for example. One attack in half an hour and we feck it.
Do we really think he's worth basing the defence around his injuries and slowly getting him back in the team?

Probably don't want to "waste" one of the 3 subs that could be needed elsewhere.

Agree. Especially with the "important/tougher" games ahead, this Bournemouth game was supposed to be one of the easier game to use a weaker team/ combination. Shite just happened.

The playing in U21 is discussed to death. It's not Mourinho's management way since he used small squad, he needs all first team players in training session even if they don't feature in match day squad.

Other than the pen (which was a indeed bad mistake) did he really make any other mistakes? I can't remember any. I thought Rojo was the man who got caught out by that ball over the top when their striker slipped in a 1v1 with DDG.

I mean, the pen means he didn't have a good game obviously but he wasn't terrible, I guess is what I'm saying? I'm gonna try and find a positive and say that he at least looks very comfortable on the ball... something our other CBs lack. And I'm gonna find an excuse too, it's his first game back after injury.

I just think the criticism is a bit over the top because we didn't win today and everyone is really frustrated with the team. He was nowhere near as bad as Pog and Ibra today for me. Or as bad as Bailly has been in his last 2 games.

He had couple underhit passes which made our team nervy.

Compare to his standard this season, he's definitely subpar. While not constantly being exposed, he didn't assure the defense with his play. His distribution is dull too. Some pointless passes. Didn't step into midfield when he had space.

It's not about how many mistakes he made this game that's the problem, it's the overall level he delivered with how little Bournemouth threatened our defense enough to cost us. Should have been at least tidier to help the team which all over the place.

Well done for completely missing my point
My point is We need two top quality regular first team CBs who do well week in week out. That's what top United teams had and need (Bruce-Pally, Stam-Johnsen, Rio-Vidic). We've been stuck with this rubbish for 3 years and none of them had been able to win a regular first team place. Its time for a big change in defense

Truth be told Phil always lacks brains. Good 3rd-4th choice centre back for us be we need better than him Rojo and Smalling. The lack of cover he got from Carrick yesterday didn't help granted.

Underhit passes, overhit first touches, lack of antipication leaving him on the back foot. Plenty of all. No matter how good he is on a good day, he's just got too many mistakes in him to be a starter for us long term. Like Smalling but worse.

feck sakes. One bad game and the tables have turned. We've the third best defense in the league for a reason and for once, it's not De Gea. Yes, he was shite yesterday, but the game (in the first half) was incredibly open. Both Afobe and King were in our half for most of the first 45 - quite literally a 2 v 2 in every attack they had. What do you expect? It would have been no different with Smalling or Bailly.

I agree....I thought people were saying how well he was playing recently. People were disappointed he got injured because he'd been playing well? He didn't have a great game..but then gain most of the team didn't really.

This is my point, a player plays well over a sustained period and he's amazing, has one bad game after returning from injury and suddenly he's back to being shite.. it swings from one extreme to the other without any rational thought.

Yeah what's the point, let's just sell everyone who has a bad game or gets injured.
We need a better defence that can form a partnership, which you can't do if someone is always injured. We need the backup for that defence to be ready if there's any injuries or someone needs resting. Can't hope it happens to coincide with the few months a year when Jones is fit.
