The fact that he was allowed to extend his contract shows how stupid Ole and the board really were (assuming Ole had any input). It's not the most dramatic mistake a club has made in recent times, but certainly one of the stupidest given there was literally no reason to justify it.

You should build this man a statue. He will literally be contracted to you forever and probably still not qualify for a testimonial

The weakness from the club and fans - exemplified by their actions and feelings towards this cling-on - typifies our decline.
What feelings about Jones typifies Man Utd's decline? I really would like to know what else could have been done between the end of 2019 and now with him.

Pay him whatever we are contracted to, allow him to use the health centre like a member, but leave him out of the squad. Make no illusion to Jones, fans, and the manager, Jones will not be fit for a long time. Or register him under U21, if football matters to him so much.

If he could be guaranteed to stay fit he’d probably be good for Burnley.

Absolutely baffling he was given such a new deal; anyone who says otherwise must be related by blood. An pinpoint example of our incompetence during that period. Hopefully, that's over now.

Correct.
A top club would assess a player and if he isn't good enough, they get rid.
In our heyday, we sold players of the quality of Ruud Van Nistlerooy and David Beckham, yet somehow, Phil Jones gets to stay, year after year, playing 5 games per season for us.

Why are we hanging onto player who simply aren't good enough?

He was offered a testimonial and declined. He seems to know that he's unpopular with a lot of fans. I actually have sympathy for him and quite like him but I agree that we shouldn't have extended his contract given his injuries.

He was given the contract when he was fit, healthy, playing and in the England squad
When did that happen?
He's never been fit and healthy for any decent period of time. He plays a few games, then he's off injured for a few months.
Being injured is his default setting.
Even now - injured!

I have no sympathy for him. I want our club to start winning and we need to eject any players who are not contributing to our upward trajectory.
Jones, LIngard, Pogba - these player need to be kicked out asap!

I agree but I can think United shouldn't extend his contract and feel sorry for how much abuse he's gotten.

So leave him out of the squad even though he's worked hard to be fit again just because you don't like him? Even if he's been extremely professional? Okay.

Jones hasn't been injured since he's come back. Nothing longer than a couple of days if anything.

The same way that we treat Hargreaves. There is no Like or Dislike, players simply have to earn their place. Let him play regularly for U21 for 1/2 a season, and if he can stay fit and seem capable, put him back in.

How many seasons has Jones been out? Can Jones play regularly for 5-6 games without injury? Why his recovery always take months, not weeks, like others. The medical professional team has been unprofessional, not only fail to help Jones, but fail to give advice to the manager as well.

Should have got rid long ago, the fact he's still around says everything about how badly the club is run and how poor the Glazers are at running a business.

He has his own pre-season regime? Wtf?! This guy.....i don't know to laugh or cry anymore.
I wonder if he uses his left hand or his right hand for this pre-season regime. What type of 'training material' do you think he prefers?

Probably Escort given he’s a tired old banger that’s falling to pieces!

Hopefully we have a buyer lined up. I understand he has had quite a bit of interest…..
Only an idiot would agree to pay money for him.
And that idiot is MUFC chief negotiator - MATT JUDGE! No doubt, he'll be replaced by someone equally as adept at negotiating the worst deals in world football.

Don't be silly - he's clearly not part of our plans, and everyone knows that. So he'll be training on his own to keep/get fit, and looking for a club. I very much doubt we're looking for a fee - just case of finding a club willing to take a risk on him given his injury record.

I think he'll try his best to stick around and finish out his contract. If he goes now, he'll have to take a significant wage cut (because no sane club will pay him anywhere near what he's on with us), whereas if he waits out another year, he gets his loyalty bonus and becomes a free agent asking for a signing bonus. The man even refused to go to France for 4 months to try reviving his career.

Rio was absolutely wrong and he knew it hence why he apologized.
He wasn't wrong he said the truth but only apologised because he didn't want to look like dick.

We should have terminated his contract a long time ago but didn't, now we can't sell him, he's never fit enough to play and when he does play he stinks up the place with disastrous performance. Glad ETH left him behind he hasn't been Manutd player for a very long time.

He'll probably stay as no one will pay him the salary we give him. He's too much of a risk and quite frankly he's not a good player either

Rio was a gigantic bellend about Phil and he rightfully got a yelling from Ole for it. He even apologized for what he said later.

I hope he leaves the club just so he doesnt have to suffer you lot any longer.
Why? Players who are useless to the club shouldn't be given a new contract. We're a football club not Florence Nightingale. Regarding ole well there's not many managers around who weren't able to win anything despite having spent 420m on transfers

You're unaware Rio o said it while Jones was recovering from a career threatening injury he was dealing with for over a year.

Rio was unaware too, because it wasnt communicated to the outside, hence the genuine apology at the time.

Also, you can't just terminate a contract. How old are you?

Whatever you think of Phil Jones you can't just terminate a players contract because they're injured.
We were in the wrong for giving him a long contract in the 1st place its not his fault he got bad injuries that have ruined his career.

Phil Jones has a Premier League winners medal. It was the injuries that did for him.

Edit: and he will have another one by the end of this season, bookmark this post it will go down in legend
I actually wrote this post in February 2021. Anyway, I'm writing it again now: by this exact time next year Phil Jones will have yet another premier League winners medal, bookmark this post it will go down in legend

Maybe taking the no 4 off him and give it to a player who is going to play regularly, would make him consider leaving to the first team who wanted him on a free transfer. You know how touchy some of these players are.

Actually contracts can be terminated as long as full salary is paid. That would leave the player in a bit of a pickle since he'll have to find a club willing to take him in and to allow him to use their medical/training facilities for free to get his career back in order. We hear about how disruptive a player can be when he's not allowed to leave a club. What many fail to appreciate that this can be done both ways. Clubs can prohibit access to their facilities, they can force players to train with the kids, they can tell the player not to bother coming to work at all or they can drag their heels in actually paying the player forcing him to go to court. Usually players in such situation end up paranoiac as they would end up relying on this unhappy club with their career. Which is why players in such circumstances either leave through mutual consent (ex Erikson, Willian etc) or they renegotiate their contract to accept a massive paycut.
