Terrible source, nothing story, and even then they’re pretty much all saying their clubs won’t sell not the players turning us down, so weird thread overall.

Two of them are not for sale, one of them plays for Leeds and doesn't want to join their bitter rivals. Its hardly the end of times.

Not saying I entirely believe the sources (Star and Mirror) but did say about six weeks ago that I wouldn't be surprised if our targets turned us down...

I think this is always going to be the case. Even when United were top dogs. ten Hag getting his primary targets is the dream (one hopes), but being able to source alternatives is going to be the true test of him and his recruitment team. I'm more excited about him unearthing a nugget/unfancied player and having them blow all expectation away.

I had read this article and completely dismissed it, it is all hearsay and conjecture, Bellingham is mentioned when we know he isn’t going anywhere, especially with Haaland going. The rest are all plucked out of thin air, all the top clubs have still been able to recruit well when in a slump. We will of course get some that will turn us down, but we will still be able to recruit. We’re not AFC Wimbledon.

I assume that Haaland has already turned us down, I can’t believe we wouldn’t have wanted him at £51m

Well I look at Odegaard at Arsenal -

He didn't join them first time around but did the second time.

I just feel like we are like that. Not going to get players like Tchouameni if he has a choice between us and Madrid but if they leave Madrid there is a chance it's us.

I also feel like the new era of 18 year old players were probably not fans of how we played 10 years ago around the time they were 8 - so I don't think we have this big fan base of players that want to join us either.

If this is true, which I dont fully believe we will be in big trouble. If we have to rely in Beek, Fred and McTom Ten Haag will only last a season or two

@mitchmouse mate everyone I know has been telling me the same for years. "As if Di Maria would join you with no CL! AS IF POGBA WOULD Join you! Why would Falcao play for man Utd with no CL! As if Madrid would sell Varane to United! Ronaldo is going to choose City! Sancho is too good for man Utd he won't go there!"

Etc etc etc right up till we sign Frenkie de Jong in 2 weeks time

We sign them because we overpaid either in fees or wages. Yeah sure we are still a top club with massive history but we attracted these top players mostly its because we overpay. Now everyone is saying dont pay ridiculous fees/wages - good luck with that

We need to realise that the rest of the football world can see the absolute state the club is in, toxic and drifting. There will be lots of inside chat with agents and possible target players so players will get the full story and gossip. The new manager has a massive task, who knows if he succeeds. Players often came for money, but that will also be in less supply. We are going to have to cut our cloth, not necessarily a bad thing but up to now our scouting has been poor and when we have signed young players we seem to massively overpay and then dont develop them. To pretend things carry on as before is eiter naive or stupid.

Whatever about that story specifically, obviously some players are going to turn us down. That's part and parcel of being in the position we're in.

But that's fine. There's still a huge swathe of talent good enough to get us back to the top who aren't going to be signed by the clubs ahead of us in the pecking order. You just need to identify and target the best and most suitable of that cohort.

Some fans will rather have players like Fellaini, Fred and Mctominay than proper players because hey, they have full pazzion for the badge amirite?? Still stuck in the old United way

Overpaying for quality is not an issue - although that doesn't always guarantee anything. Paying squad players north of a 100k per week is.

I do not believe that Ten Hag has told Man Utd he wants any of these players. I very much doubt that Ten Hag has spent much time watching Leeds, West Ham or Lazio this season. Ajax were in a Champions League group with Dortmund so he'd have seen Bellingham. However, to call these players Ten Hag's targets is nonsense. Especially as that's not how he works. We know that, at Ajax, Overmars did the bulk of the recruitment for Ten Hag. Ten Hag simply gave him player profiles that were needed and Overmars picked the guys who fit the specifications.

Its clear from how often these names have been linked with us that these are 'club targets'. Our recruitment department has identified them and keeps pushing their names. I would have bet that the club would have chased these players whoever it appointed as Head Coach for next season. If they are not gettable lets just hope the club has identified players who can do what Ten Hag needs doing at #6 and #8 in his system.

Whatever about that story specifically, obviously some players are going to turn us down. That's part and parcel of being in the position we're in.

This is also true and we should remember that, even when we were the best team in England, it won't be the first time players turned us down. I can still remember Patrick Kluivert saying in the summer of 1998 that the only English team he'd play for was Arsenal. Thanks Patrick we signed Dwight Yorke and it worked out pretty well for us the following season! The key thing for United is to make sure we understand what Ten Hag needs in his midfield and to have a list of targets who can fit the bill.

In recent years our recruitment seems to have been done based on how 'big' a player is rather than whether he's the right player. When Liverpool were picking up Andy Robertson from Hull people were dismissing it. However, turns out they'd scouted him and knew exactly what they were getting and how he'd fit into their system. I wish our recruitment department could act like that.

51m

This deal has been done for years, no-one else was in the running so we, Liverpool, Real, Barca and Bayern would’ve been no where near doing a deal. The entire release clause was to allow a City or PsG to pretend they are only paying a small fee whilst the player, his agent and his Dad make more combined (in Abu Dhabi side deals) than Dortmund.

Remember when Kluivert not only turned us down but did it publicly saying Arsenal are the only club in England.. We then signed Yorke and won the treble.

There's always other players

This story is obviously clickbait nonsense most of those players aren't for sale it seems ass opposed to them turning United down.

Though don't be surprised if players do turn United down given the lack of CL football. Not being in the CL will hurt ETH's rebuild and limit his choice of potential targets significantly.

Yeah, Haaland got a $22.5 million release clause to leave Salzburg when he wanted for where he wanted, and has done the same for Dortmund.

Like every summer Uts will be used by agents to drive a better deal for their clients - it’s too easy to throw in that Utd are interested - this summer will be even more as everyone knows the state we are in and the fact that we have so many leaving.

Let’s hope our negotiations are done a little more stealthily than in previous years.

Well you could also say that we have been making clear and major moves to end the rut we are in and those on the inside (player/agents) will have even more knowledge of that. As soon as the season has ended the toxic state you are referring to will be addressed.

I'd turn us down also, if I saw I had to play in same squad as Phil Jones.

I just really hope United don't make same mistakes and over pay and offer stupid wages on useless players, all because we didn't make champions league.

We are where we are, no good pretending we're not less attractive. We don't want to start sounding like the Liverpool fans of 5 years ago.

We're there as a step up and an outside bet of a trophy for most players. We shouldn't force it through excessive wages.

@UpWithRivers weird to paint that negatively though. If we have to overpay players then that still means they "chose" us.

@Gordon Godot what are you talking about. You've decided that agents clubs and players are toxic about our club based on (???). Raiola used to chat shit publicly about our club but he's dead now, so he won't be doing that anymore. And even if there are clubs ahead of us that players would choose (Liverpool, City, Munich, Barcelona, Madrid or whoever) - who cares. They can still only have a squad size of 25 players each, that leaves plenty of quality players to sign to replace the likes of Matic etc. And if we are moving away from the mercenary approach:. GOOD. We need 11 players that want to play for us, not 11 Pogba's worrying about their brand.

How can that possibly not be negative. Players used to come to United to win things, to play with the best players, the best manager, to reach the pinnacle of football. Now they come for the cash and thats not negative because the chose us anyway! Its like believing that your prostitute is in love with you. spoiler alert- they're not.

.... Oh yes like when we signed Rooney, van Persie and Ferdinand and paid them in peanuts. Because, you know, during the 1990's and 2000's all we paid players was vibes and trophies to sell on eBay. We've always spent money. We've always paid with the best of them, but you're not wrong in that that's a major part of why any footballer chose Chelsea or City back in those days. Yaya Toure and Robinho didn't want to swap Spain to play in front of 25,000 drooling Stockport mancs until they saw the money. As long as we get the players we need who cares.

Nice though it would be to believe that all our players who were successful here and seemed to love the club weren't here for the money, a lot of them were. If we hadn't been willing to pay some of them more than they'd get elsewhere, they'd have gone elsewhere. No different to players we'll target in the present and in the future. Money has always been a massive factor in how we attracted the players we did.

Just because your previous prostitutes told you they loved you, it doesn't mean they did either.

What are you both on about? I never said all of our players that we ever signed were here just for the money or we never paid top fees/wages. Im talking recently. Everyone thinks the top players we sign - sancho/varane etc is proof that players will always come to play for United because of our history. Im suggesting its even though thats a factor its more because we overpay. Thats just a fact - look at our wage bill and the amount of money we have spent on transfers. Do you think if City or Liverpool offered the wages and cash for Varane/Sancho they would have still chosen us? I doubt it. Ronaldo is a different story because of his history but if he was 30 then he would have joined another club.

Players have always turned clubs down for variety of reasons, that applies to clubs that are at the top and clubs that aren't. People make a bigger deal of it than they should.

Players turn clubs down all the time unless you are Barca or Real. That's nothing to be ashamed off.

Next thread .

The story is of course bullshit, but in reality it will be tough to convince players to join.

We are a huge mess on and off the field and players will be far better elsewhere.

Nothing article listing players who were never going to come to us, but it's obviously a thing that players will turn us down. I'd love to get Frenkie de Jong and Tchouameni, but being realistic, we are not going to get them this summer. Next summer might be different. This summer we're dealing in a lower reputation of player market. It's a good thing IMO. And there's plenty of quality players there too. Darwin, Timber, Antony, Kamara for example would be a great summer for us, just doubt Ajax would sell them. Or you've got Raphinha who is going down with Leeds, Mukiele with his contract situation being only 10m or so, Nkunku, etc.

We won't get any star players this summer, but we don't need them. We need good young players who can develop into top players, but with mentalities ready to be molded as a team.
