Players we need to ship out

I know we've probably got other threads that say the same thing. If that bothers you, please don't bother reading this one.

====

Since Ole has come in we've seen a lot of players moved on (not adequtely replaced arguably). I personally think we're scratching the surface. I think we need to accept a couple of seasons of obscurity whilst we have a major overhaul of our squad.

So far we've got rid of Fellaini, Valencia, Herrera, Darmian, Lukaku, Sanchez, Smalling; not bad for <12 months work. I think we also need to get rid of;

Young, Rojo, Jones, Bailly, Matic, Fred, Lingard, Pogba, Periera, Mata.

All of these guys are either aging, under performing, not good enough, don't care enough or a mixture of these things. I think it'll take a few windows to get rid of them all, but i think this is the scope of the job.

This summer i'd focus on moving on Pogba as a priority (he wants out, we can cash in for him, probably wont sign an extension), and Matic (who is in a key position and very ineffective). The rest it really doesn't matter when we move them on. I'd prioritise it by how often they play for us, so maybe something like;

1. Pogba
2. Matic
3. Lingard
4. Young
5. Mata
6. Fred
7. Rojo, Jones, Bailly, Periera

Whilst these players are here, the quality of our squad will not be good enough to challenge for the title. Pogba should be our Kane/Hazard/Salah/Gerrard - he does it one game out of 4 i reckon. The rest just aren't of the required quality.

Unfortunately Woodward will probably see this thread and see that as a list of players to give new contracts to.

I think Pogba could be amazing under a manager that doesn't let the players have too much power but Ole is a weakling and Jose had a history of starting wars with his squads. I'm sure any top manager would love to work with him.

I'd rather we sign midfielders before we start selling them off. With Pogba, Matic, Pereira and Fred gone our midfield options will be McTominay and Garner! That's it!

I'd say nearly half that list is going to be kept because they are loyal, United through and through, great professionals etc.

Jumping the gun. I think any talk of deadwood should now come with a suggestion for viable replacements. Ship out Pogba? And replace him with who? He's leaving anyway but no one in his talent bracket will come on our current trajectory. Not without a ridiculous payrise anyway

I'm not sure we can really afford to let anyone else go can we? The squad is down to the bare bones as it is. I get the need to move people out if they're being disruptive (i.e. Sanchez with his wages, Lukaku with him being a cnut) but unless over the course of the season someone else starts causing problems the priority over the next couple of windows has to be building the squad back up

I see Young & Grant being released as their contracts end in June 2020, and perhaps Pogba being sold initially as I would assume he is asking himself why is he still here? We should also see permanent deals for Smalling & Sanchez at other clubs.

Bailly's contract ends in June 2020. I wouldn't have been surprised if he was the one who was going to be moved on first out of our centrebacks, but the injury halted any potential deal. Unfortunately, unless something happens in January, I think the club will be offering him a new contract rather than letting him run it down. We should really be looking to find a buyer in Janaury, however,

Matic's contract also ends in June 2020, but he has the additional year option unlike Bailly, which will be activated by January I would imagine. We should be looking to move him on after activating this deal but considering people expect Pogba to go and also want Andreas moved on (which isn't happening given that he signed a new deal just this year until 2023) it's going to leave us incredibly short.

So, we could be looking at the following players gone by June 2020: Young, Grant, Bailly, Pogba, Matic, (Smalling, Sanchez).

We'd be in desperate need of two amazing midfield signings and still need at least one attacking player (probably two realistically). Finding these players will cost big money, more than what we spent on trying to fix our defence. It's just such a big mess that I can't see the overhaul even being close to finished until 2021. It's going to be a long ordeal. Even if we manage to generate £200m+ in player sales, we wouldn't spend it all.

For what it's worth, I think Lingard, Andreas, Jones, Rojo, Fred, and possibly Mata will still be here when/if Ole enters the final year of his contract.

We'll sell about 4 or 5 of those players, buy 2 or 3 in.

Then with about two weeks of the window to go we'll sell Pogba and we won't replace him.

Pretty much this.

GK: De Gea, Romero, Grant
LB: Shaw, Young, Dalot
CB: Maguire, Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Jones/Bailly/Rojo
RB: Wan-Bissaka, Dalot, Young
DM: McTominay, Matic
CM: Pogba, Fred, Pereira
AM: Lingard, Mata, Gomes, Pogba
RW: James, Rashford, Chong, Greenwood, Lingard, Mata, Pereira (literally none of these players should be playing at RW)
LW: James, Martial, Rashford
ST: Martial, Rashford, Greenwood

We have far too many CBs so at least one of Jones, Rojo and Bailly should go. Maybe one of Grant and J. Pereira can go (probably Pereira since he's still young but ain't getting any chances with us). If Dalot can be relied upon then Young can go. If Gomes cements a first team spot then Mata or Lingard can go (probably Mata).

Midfield and attack are the big problem areas. We're too thin there and the options we do have aren't good enough. We need at least two new midfielders and one right winger before we even think about selling more players.

Jones - Injury prone and not really that good.

Rojo - Injury Prone, offers nothing really and after nearly being transferred to Everton he pretty well wont care much what Ole thinks/says.

Lingard - Extremely overrated and more athlete than footballer, comes across highly irritating and childish for someone his age.

Matic - One of the main culprits for me in how bad we play! Slows down play with how many touches he takes and offers nothing now due to age or attitude.

Pereira - Not really that good! could he possibly offer more if he had better players around him, I doubt it.

Young - Not a full back and not good enough anymore to play for a team that should be pushing for honours.

Bailly - Always injured so cant prove if he's good or not.

There is others that are 50/50 like Pogba, Mata, Shaw, for different reasons but if anyone looking at our squad thinks its a quick fix needs to realise its not going to happen in one hit getting rid of some of these players and several factors come into play trying to get rid of them.

I think the problems we have upfront are more difficult to solve than replacing Pogba. If we sold Pogba I'd buy one DM and an AM (n0.10)- Maddison being the obvious choice and play them as DM and McTominay at the base of midfield and Maddison behind the forwads. In attack we need a genuine wide forward to play on the right and a central striker (either to come in as a starter or competition/back up to Martial). Those 4 signings will transform the team so much that we won't miss Pogba.

I would agree. And I would bring in Grillitsch, Pelegrini, and Maddison for our Midfield.

Moving on players without signing alternatives - This is something we can't do and I am not suggesting we do it either.

Like for like alternatives - I think in some cases we can't have a like for like alternative, we have to work around this and look for players in those positions who'd improve us. We won't attract anyone of Pogba's calibre without CL football. In other cases I don't think we should get a like for like alternative. Do we really need a specialist 10 like Mata? Or would you rather somoene who can play in a 433 and step up when into the 10 role when required?

Incomings - I think we urgently need a ST, RW, 2 CM's and CDM. These should be the focus this summer. The CDM should replace Matic, the CM's should replace Pogba and Herrera and the ST should replace Lukaku. The RW would fit the hole on our right.

I expect we'll be in Europa again next season so i'll temper expectations with my suggestions (I don't think Sancho is coming).

ST: Haaland, Wilson, Dembele, Son (long shot but might want first team football)
RW: Zaha, Hiyech, Chiesa, Fraser (if he's available on a free, i reckon we should sign him anyway)
CM: Maddison, Fernandes, Neves (Wolves owners impacted by Thomas Cook hit)
CDM: Weigl, Ndidi.

I'm sure people have better suggestions.

Apparently Lingard is getting a new contract, so he won't be going anywhere unfortunately. Fecking state of this club is laughable :D.

Why on earth would we offer Lingard a new contract now? He's under contract until 2021 with a +1 option. Shouldn't he prove he's any good first?

We'll end up with another player, who the manager after Solskjaer would like to get rid of; but who's wages are a stumbling block for a club at the level he's at that might want him.

We're in the processing of having a clear-out and yet every time we lose, people come on here crying!

I keep seeing 'yes, but we expected them to be replaced', and I am sure they will be. However, shipping 6/7 out and immediately replacing them with 6/7 is not the answer. I guarantee if we do that, we'll just end up with more flops to move on in two years time

For what it's worth, I would get rid of Bailly, Rojo, Sanchez, Jones, Matic, Fred and Mata immediately next summer. I would hope/expect we would buy three/four players to replace them and then I really don't care if the rest of the gaps have to be filled by Academy players

Clear out?

I'd go the other way and do a list who I WOULDN'T want to see go.
Probably limited to the below

De Gea,
Wan Bissaka, Maguire
McTom, Pogba
Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, James

Anyone else I wouldn't be too worried to see go

There's a few who are borderline, like Shaw and Lindelöf, who I wouldn't be upset to see go, but can't believe there isn't an upgrade on them.

You’ve literally sold the whole squad or very close to it. At what point do you realise it’s not just the players?

It’s a never ending cycle, how long until James, AWB etc start making these lists?

Let’s ship everyone out, then we can moan about lack of replacements and Woodward’s dithering in the market to replace them. Apart from centre backs and keepers we’re bare bones in the rest of the squad.

Yep, it is a bit reminiscent to the Van Gaal clear out, where we went weak then, and again had to dip into a very mediocre set of kids (like now).
How many "made it" from that regime? One? Rashford?

How many will make it from this regime? Time will tell.

Crazy how we can be both so bloated with below par players & lacking in any basic depth at the same time. Awful few years of transfers we've had (last year was a big turn around in my opinion, although I'd have liked far more done).

I'd say definite outs should be:

Defence: Jones, Young, Rojo, Bailly.
Midfield: Matic, Fred, Pereira.
Attack: Mata, Lingard, Sanchez.

Unless we believe Tuanzebe is good enough long-term to partner Maguire we should be signing a new CB. I'd happily take Smalling back as cover if he's willing to fill that role.

We'd need at least three brought in to centre midfield - perhaps Garner fills one of those roles - An Ndidi type & a box-to-box with the ability to grab a goal or two to compliment Pogba. Dalot & Williams can compete for right and left back spots respectively.

Gomes & Greenwood promoted to permanent senior members of the squad, along with a top RW (Chiesa anybody?) and depending on how Martial does, a top striker (Backup if he seriously impresses).

Would leave us with two teams along the lines of:

DDG
AWB - Tuanzebe - Maguire - Shaw
----- B2B - Ndidi - Pogba
---- Chiesa - Martial - James

Romero
Dalot - Lindelof - Smalling - Williams
McTom - Garner - Gomes
Greenwood - ST - Rashford

Even then there's work to do of course - Second midfield still very weak - but I reckon that's a step in the right direction. So frustrating to know that if we wanted to we could pull off a swift transition like this, but never will.

Either way, even if it has to happen over a couple of windows I think this would leave us in a better place two / three years from now.

Step 1 Find a manager with a style of play we like who has a track record (don't have to be winning trophies) in a major European league.
Step 2 Back him 1st season, look for signs of improvement, continue backing

It really is this simple but we have made it hard for ourselves by signing Moyes (did we really aspire to play like Everton?), LVG (style didn't work out but this hire made sense), Mou (see step 1) and Ole (see step 1)

It's not about shipping out x,y,z player - you need the foundations in place first. Who knows, under a new manager some of the players who are under performing now might fit their system better. Manager first, players second.

So in other words, the players.

A handful of kids and three goalkeepers. That’ll be fun.

Can all go. Goes without saying we would need to have players of better quality coming in to replace them.

Problem is, we have to replace them. Selling Lukaku without replacing him this summer is already feckin us over. Jones can feck off without replacing though.

We can't ship out everyone at one go, so I would definitely keep Pogba for now and see if Fred can be adapted to different system with more movement on the pitch. The rest of them on the OP's list will have to go at some point in time, if we ever want play advanced pressing football.

I hear Mata is being tipped for club's ambassador role in few years... Just make him now with immediate effect right after this season. He clearly knows how to put a good message and in that regard he'll be wonderful speaker and a friendly figure that whole world can listen, football matters need to finally come first.

I’d keep those 2 for squad depth but should be nowhere near the starting lineup.

I think the need to get players in is a bigger concern.

Get the replacements for Mata, Matic, etc. first of all and THEN the shipping out will take care of itself.

Yes exactly. Because obviously i meant just sacking them all tomorrow and not signing any replacements.
We still need replacements for players we lost last window. We need 4 starters. Some of the kids won’t work out because some promising kids don’t. So we’ll need to replace them. A few players will demand transfers. We’ll need to replace them. Pogba may bail on us. We need to replace him. When exactly are we supposed to turn over the rest of the squad?

Honestly this club needs a reboot and there's a list as long as my arm of players who are not suitable. Ideally we would change so many of them including the likes of Rashford, Pogba and Martial who don't have the right level of skill or mentality to be at a club like this. However, since it's not going to happen, I'll say the ones who really need to go are :

Rojo
Jones
Young
Matic
Mata
Lingard
Pereira
Bailly

Our young players have nobody worth looking up to in this squad and it's difficult to see them blossoming as they perhaps could with a squad full of senior players who are lauded as big deals without really having a lot of skill (Rashford) or think they're some sort of world class player who's made it already while playing like crap (Pogba, Lingard) or constant wantaways (De Gea, Pogba) or just comical, farcical, error prone buffoons (Jones, Rojo).

We have some very promising young players who might become top players if they could play in a team where there are players like Scholes, Rooney, Zlatan etc (Norwood, Gomes, Greenwood, Tuanzebe) but in this team they're likely to only really learn how to slowly and aimlessly pass the ball backwards and sideways while promoting their latest line of perfumes.

If you go back to my original post, i didn't say it had to happen overnight, in fact i only said we ought to try to move out/replace Pogba and Matic this summer and the rest, it doesn't matter when we do it. If we can do a 1 in 1 out in January, or in 18 months time - it doesn't matter.

I'm not saying it has to be immediate - but it does have to happen. Personally i don't want to see any of them listed here at the start of the 21/22 season, but i expect realistically it'll take 3 years rather than 2 to flog them all.
