We’re rubbish at it & look like giving away chances every time we do it! We don’t have the players for it so just fecking clear it! Heart palpitations every time we do this.

We’re much much better at it than we used to be and it’s already proved it’s value multiple times this season.

It’s improved.

But honestly no point Lindelof getting it and passing it to AWB. He’s just awful on the ball and holds onto the ball far too long.

We're fine. Every team that is pressed when playing out from the back - teams better at it than we are - give away chances. It's part and parcel.

Yep, saw it a couple times from City against Liverpool.

No we’re no rubbish at it, we’ve improved dramatically and are now one of the best in the league. There’s a really good Michael Cox article on Matić which he wrote this week which touches on this aspect of our game.

De Gea and AWB are obvious weak links but Matic and Pogba are providing them with a lot of options which allows them to keep things simple most of the time. It's been one of the best features of our play for most of this year.

We’re not too bad at it and have definitely improved. Lumping it up is just handing possession back, so we’re on the right track. I don’t think De Gea is the best at it though.

AWB is the weakest link in that setup. Anyone competent would do wonders to this style of play

Lindelof is awful going forward, so many times Pogba is right next to him and he's ignored, Lindelof is the most hesitant CB at the club and one of the most hesitant in the league.

Definitely needs upgrading in the summer.

As a defender he's 'ok' of course but passing he just doesn't have it.

There's been a few ugly situations today, but we've played like this for a long time now. Our effectiveness in playing out from the back with confidence instead of plowing it upwards has actually been my favorite part of our play coming back from the iso break.

Agreed, De Gea lumping it forward used to drive me insane as he's pretty shit at long passing.

AWB is the best defensive full-back in the league and probably one of the best in the world.

He's 22 years old, his passing play can improve vastly over the next few years, he's already growing as a player but AWB has the potential to be world class, he could be a 'complete fullback' in a few years.

If AWB stays behind in training and practices crossing 2 hours a day after training there'll be big improvement seen with him.

AWB isn't the issue, Lindelof is.

We're fine at it when we need to be but we love to sit deep and take two or three touches. Maguie is especially guilty of it.

It doesn't help when our DM is a coward against high pressing teams. Matic wants space to operate in. He's got to be willing to receive the ball in tight areas. Instead, he looks for space next to or behind the back 4, which effectively removes one of our passing options.

Agreed, problem is our other DM still shows for the ball when he's got 10 players crowded around him. Matic needs to be selectively played now but Fred needs work to replace him.

Instead of hoofing we tried to pass the ball which lead to second goal.

Remind me of Liverpool & City when they first started doing, in that they weren't particularly great at it but stuck with it anyway until they brought in the right players and it paid off.

Now it’s cost us a goal. We are awful at it & Southampton have clearly identified that. We need to stop doing it.
We arent awful at it. Just sometimes when the midfield get it back to goal it needs to be popped of instead of turning not knowing whats there.

Playing out led directly to our 2nd goal

Nothing wrong with it, just move the ball quicker and don't get trapped. It's not as if City start hoofing the ball when facing a high pressing team

As @ivaldo said Matic was dropping too deep dragging Pogba with him, and leaving a massive gap up to the attack. Matic needs to get further forward and the defenders, Maguire espeically, need to trust themselves to play the passes to him. We used to be terrible 2 or 3 years ago but now we just dont experience a high press very often.

The full backs also need to pull much wider. The city liverpool game at the Etihad last season is pretty a much blueprint by both teams on how to beat a high press.

Very valid. We need to combine the two. Fredic.

I'm looking at the play out from the back and seeing how much better it is. We're not scoring loads of goals because we're bad at playing out from the back. The goal conceded had nothing do to with the quality of our passing out of the back but Pogba turning poorly with the ball.

Wan Bissaka can not play out the back. The right back version of Smalling. In fact, Shaw is the only one out of our first choice defence who looks comfortable.

Against Bournemouth both Pogba and Matic were caught on the ball allowing the opposition to break. The only difference is we're playing against a team that were able to punish us

So AWB playing a simple pass to Pogba in loads of space is playing it out from the back? Usually when people talk about playing out from the back they're talking about from the CBs and in tight spaces, not a simple pass to a midfielder who has 15 yards of space all around him

Tbh, even before Pogba got caught, I was concerned. Always seemed to be on the stretch, and we were not exactly going anywhere with it either. Was very high risk, low reward.

Southampton are posing no threat at all other than the pressure we are creating for ourselves.

Two issues:
1. AWB isn't good enough in tight spaces for this. And the opposition know it.

2. Fernandes has clearly been told to stay up field, instead getting near Pogba to give another option.

It’s risky of course, but if we’re ever going to do it right it takes time and effort. Looks a little weird though, shouldn’t our CBs take up positions more out wide?

Can't handle the press at all, too slow. It's Maguire or Lindelof against a press, not both. People saying we don't need a CB need to wake up.

The video doesn’t really start early enough. We played it across the back line under pressure before it got to AWB.
